How many portions is this for your family?

315g mince
1x 400g tin tomatoes
1 courgette
1 large pepper
2x garlic cloves

I think my portion sizes are awry and am trying to cut down on the pasta to 80g per person without starving my 13 year old! I'm sure we all are far too much pasta vs sauce.

I'd say three adults as there's a lot of vege bulking it out. Could do 4 with a salad on the side as well.

Tatiebee · 14/09/2023 11:07

I'd say that would feed a family or 4 or
5.

justasoul · 14/09/2023 11:08

2 adults and a teen in my house, with 250g of pasta (total, not per person Grin).

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 14/09/2023 11:08

We would add loads more veg (carrots, mushrooms, red, yellow and green peppers) and usually use 500g of mince and get 2 adult and 1 child portion, plus another 2 portions for leftovers/freezer.

TheFlis · 14/09/2023 11:11

Just me and DH if we we’re really hungry, might get a small portion of leftovers if we have had a decent lunch.

PaminaMozart · 14/09/2023 11:12

This plus a 1 pound pack of pasta would be enough for 5, but I'd add onion, an extra courgette and/or pepper plus some mushrooms to the sauce, and I'd serve a large salad and/or a bowl of vegetables on the side.

Basically aiming for around half the meal to be plants.

Two adults and a child with maybe some left over here.

3-5 portions. But we use more vegetables than that in a sauce... onions, carrots, maybe peas, mushrooms... No way authentic!!

Exactly the same here 🙂

Divebar2021 · 14/09/2023 11:18

I would need to see it to know for sure but I’d definitely ramp up the veg element and add a ton of mushrooms to bulk it out. Whenever I use mince I add red lentils to stretch it further also. So for that amount of meat I’d probably want 2 tins of tomatoes plus the stock. Your recipe would probably feed 2 adults and a 11 year old child in my house.

2 meals for me.
I generally only eat an evening meal so eat decent portions

Verite1 · 14/09/2023 11:23

If adults or teens probably 3. I reckon I could also feed my 6 year old as well with it, but she doesn’t like much sauce. They wouldn’t be the largest portions though. Normally in our house 500g feeds 2 adults, 1 teen and a six year old, with one extra portion to freeze. Size of extra portion depends though.

MsFrost · 14/09/2023 11:24

2-3 portions

CurlewKate · 14/09/2023 11:24

My Italian ancestors are all spinning in their graves at what people are doing to a bolognaise!!!!

WithIcePlease · 14/09/2023 11:26

2
I work on 150g meat for an adult
But I don't eat pasta so I'd have with broccoli or cabbage instead

Ifailed · 14/09/2023 11:27

PPs are writing about 'bulking out' the sauce, that's what the pasta is for!

Princessfluffy · 14/09/2023 11:28

3 adults
I use 400g of mince for 4 adults

SirChenjins · 14/09/2023 11:28

DH, teenage DS (who's tall and lean, and does loads of sports) and me with a smaller appetite. It needs an onion, some carrots and some red wine though!

Desert76 · 14/09/2023 11:31

That would be 4 portions in our family.

I usually make 8 portions of sauce from 500g minced beef, but would add more vegetables (celery, carrots) a large glass of red wine and a carton of passata in addition to tinned tomatoes, and serve salad alongside.

ShadyPaws · 14/09/2023 11:32

If it helps I use 500g mince for most stuff which gives me 5 portions - so cottage pie etc
Pasta I tend to do a bake to use up odd bits of veg/cheese/scraps of meat

Xmasbaby11 · 14/09/2023 11:34

3 maybe 4 depending on age and appetite. I usually make much bigger batch and freeze what’s left.

Vegetables like carrots are cheaper than pasta these days!!

As for authencity... whats more important... feeding your family nutritious food in a cost effective manner or the integrity of a recipe that probably varied between families and regions and has evolved over the years anyway?

Crikeyalmighty · 14/09/2023 11:37

2 plus 1 child

CatsOnTheChair · 14/09/2023 11:38

I bulk it out with quite a lot more veg (onion and carrots for starters, celery if I have it in), but I'd probably serve 4 or 5 from that (we get 8 not quite big enough portions from 500g)

Greycheck · 14/09/2023 11:41

Two probably. Bulking out with veg doesn't make it any more filling ime when feeding four adults.

Unless serving with Mumsnet big salad in which case 27.

Ladyoftheknight · 14/09/2023 11:44

4 portions. We don't over-sauce our pasta dishes and I find lots of spag bols are made with more bol than spag. This is what our spag bol would look like- a plate of spaghetti with a minimal ladle of bol on top
