John Major's chicken recipe

Long shot.

In the early 90's a magazine, possibly Good Housekeeping, published an article where the leaders of the 3 main political parties of the time, provided them with a recipe. John Major (con) provided a Chicken dish which was chicken fillets with a Tabasco heavy sauce. John Smith (lab) was a salmon thing, and I cant remember what Paddy Ashdown (Lib) was.

Anyhoo, the John Major recipe was brilliant, and I've never replicated it. It would have been published at some point between summer 92 and spring 94, as that was the period where John Smith was both alive, and the leader of the Labour Party.

Anyone got the John Major recipe? If so, please take a photo and post it.

I made it tonight. Family liked it. I found it a bit of a faff with the pre-browning etc. There are easier recipes! But quite nice.

I also made this, yesterday. As AlexaON says it's a bit of a faff to pre-brown. I am sporting about six small burn marks on my arm to prove this, it was spluttering madly for me for some reason. Usually we chop a chicken into parts, season and spice, whatever, and roast in the oven, which frankly turns out as nice. Also I felt a mild disappointment when the chicken was browning nicely and the skin was beginning to look a bit like fried chicken that this wasn't what I was making :grin:. Ran out of ketchup so had to half and half with chili sauce. I think it was fine, it's nice, everyone ate it and enjoyed. But I don't know if I loved it? Will have to make again to make sure. The novelty factor was a bonus of course!

Cayenne or chilli powder would be a better substitute.

I got tabasco specially, am going to give this a try at the weekend 😊

Well, it's taken me over a year to get around to making it and it was surprisingly rather nice. Just resurrecting the thread so others can try Sir John Major's favourite chicken dinner!

Very timely as far as I'm concerned. BUT I have a bottle of pickle flavoured ketchup that I wish to swiftly use up. I love pickle and I love ketchup, so I thought it was a good idea. Reader, it was not.
If I use it up on John Major's Chicken, am I going to be mourning the loss of good chicken thighs, or will it be magically transformed into something delicious? Dare I even try it on Wednesday when I have a guest and was going to do a chicken casserole? Herewith the abomination. I advise all of you to AVOID at all costs!

Pickle flavoured ketchup sounds wrong 😂
Try making the sauce first before cooking the chicken. If you like it you could add the chicken and onions after.

@Treesandsheepeverywhere ha no not me, I bought it spontaneously instore didn't even read any reviews until yesterday. I just tasted it again, neat. I can taste the gherkins but there's something else that ruins it, something...oh, floral is the best way I can describe it. Like someone lost a violet cream chocolate in the vat of ketchup. 😂

@NeverMindTheBackProblems good shout to make the sauce first I think I'm gonna do that but not on a day we've got a guest. I'm sticking to my tried and tested casserole.
Definitely going to try making Major's chicken with the pickle ketchup sometime though coz I've got no other use for it!

OK it leaves a WEIRD aftertaste, I can taste it now. Less floral now more diesel. 😱

Tell you what IS nice that I picked up recently though. Truffle mayonnaise. Oh, yes. 😋

You won't believe this, Got a packet of truffle crisps last week, DH tried them, screwed up his face and said they tasted of diesel 😂.

Also still need to make this chicken!

OMG diesel everywhere! Default nasty flavour. I've had truffle crisps, they were all right but not sure I'd shell out for them again. They were nearly £5! 😳
