John Major's chicken recipe

Long shot.

In the early 90's a magazine, possibly Good Housekeeping, published an article where the leaders of the 3 main political parties of the time, provided them with a recipe. John Major (con) provided a Chicken dish which was chicken fillets with a Tabasco heavy sauce. John Smith (lab) was a salmon thing, and I cant remember what Paddy Ashdown (Lib) was.

Anyhoo, the John Major recipe was brilliant, and I've never replicated it. It would have been published at some point between summer 92 and spring 94, as that was the period where John Smith was both alive, and the leader of the Labour Party.

Anyone got the John Major recipe? If so, please take a photo and post it.

Cheers,

Mabel

Good lord, it's the John Major chicken thread!
Revived! It's a miracle, I tell you.
@LizTruss Is that a dressed salad? Neat little power dress wrapped round a lettuce leaf? Any cheese involved?

Fedupoftheshits · 12/08/2024 16:24

I made the John Major chicken recipe based on this thread earlier this year and it went down a treat with everyone. It's reminded me to make it more often!

Have to say Jonny Lee Millar as Johnny The Major was QUITE the glow-up.

God yes.

Made me all shivery in a nice way.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 12/08/2024 16:54

Ooh, I remember this post from the first time round! Have pinned the recipe to give it ago. I don't have tabasco but I do have other chilli sauces.

MyNameIsJMB · 12/08/2024 18:56

@ArchetypalBusyMum I will certainly let you know once I have made it after such a long long time. I can’t believe that this happened to jump out at me when I wasn’t looking for it. Amazing 🤪

Can't help with JM's chicken dish but according to many of the mainstream press, I make a mean green salad.

🤣

I have just screenshot the Downing St sheet photo. I will be making this very soon based on all the recommendations.

I don't think I want to watch Nick Griffin's cooking channel, but I suppose it is good that he has something other than hatred in his life. It reminded me of an ancient article from someone who had infiltrated the National Front, a generation before Griffin was involved. According to that the “leaders” at the time had absolutely terrible diets, living chiefly on spam.

Gammon, too, I'd assume...

ArchetypalBusyMum · 13/08/2024 07:35

When Nick Griffon asked his 3 guests what they thought of the food... Bloke 1 👍 bloke 2 👍 female... Not asked, NG host walked off - her opinion not relevant apparently 🤣 omg how to express your politics through catering. 🫠

(Nb Didn't watch whole thing, just moments and jumped to the end)

Willmafrockfit · 13/08/2024 08:19

My 43 year old husband has just found his 1990s school project

Looks like the tabasco amount wasn’t a typo after all @Alphabetty1980!?

efeslight · 13/08/2024 08:30

The twists and turns of this thread is great. Will be making J M's chicken dish soon

AlexaON · 13/08/2024 08:40

This is brilliant. Also adding to my meal plans!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/08/2024 08:52

It's so much ketchup! For anyone who has made it does it tastes ketchupy?

ArchetypalBusyMum · 13/08/2024 08:54

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira that's what I want to know. 👍

AlexaON · 13/08/2024 08:56

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira agree! I was planning to make a quick tomato sauce rather than use ketchup. Must be very vinegary?

I made it when this first came up. It really isn’t vinegary and is excellent in a totally inauthentic way. Very easy too, I’ve decided we’re having it again tonight. I do like recipes with a high yum/effort ratio.

MyNameIsJMB · 14/08/2024 18:21

OK, so after such a long long time (25 years+), I made this recipe as if it was ‘Norma Major’s Chilli Chicken.’ What made me think that Norma’s had to be the same recipe as John Major’s Mexican chicken is the fact that, 1) it comes from the same household and 2) It contains a lot of ketchup and has the chilli heat which I love. I have never seen another recipe with so much ketchup!
I have to say I really cannot remember part cooking on the hob and then in the oven before, but that is what I did this time. It was still delicious 😍, it must be the same recipe.
Some people think that the amount of Tabasco is a typo, but I think not. If you like sweet & chilli, you will love this. I know not everyone is a fan of sweet chilli, but I am. Fear not, it is also not vinegary at all but then again I do use Heinz Ketchup. I have to say I am not a real fan of Tabasco sauce, not because of the heat but because of the smell, and the taste is like the smell if that makes sense. I am wondering if maybe I did not put it in last time. I will try it without next time and also carry on cooking on the hob.
Everyone has to try this recipe.
I am still so glad I came upon this site, just for this recipe alone.
What other wonderful threads am I going to find on here?

HotCrossBunplease · 14/08/2024 18:41

I’m really amazed that this was an actual recipe in the Major household, normally these articles are just created by publicists who give the magazine some generic inoffensive content and the celeb doesn’t even see what their name has been associated with. I guess old JM had proper integrity! The Downing Street letter is amazing!

I’m a bit disappointed that there is no pic of Johns Major and Smith on the photo of the actual article though, and I’m curious about the relevance of the diet-related heading and the reference to what looks like this charity and 100 dishes..

I also found it in this parish newsletter, shared by the head chef at Chequers and calling it “Major’s Chicken” so it seems genuine.

Amazing! This thread keeps on giving!

tobee · 14/08/2024 20:01

Reading this thread I'm sure it's actually a special code thread for spies. 🕵️‍♀️ 😆

ArchetypalBusyMum · 14/08/2024 20:31

@MyNameIsJMB amazing! So glad you've come back to report back!!

My only concern is that no one in our house actually likes ketchup (I know, how!?) so if it tastes of ketchup it won't go down well... But so many people saying it is delicious... Surely the ketchup just be transformed in combination with the rest right??

I think I just need to be bold and go for it. 🤣
