Pancakes - Anyone one else have them with gravy?

Growing up we always had gravy. Never sweet things such as lemon, sugar, chocolate, syrup.

Dds think I'm crazy and just want chocolate, syrup, strawberries etc.

Gravy is disgusting and those pictures actually make me feel sick.

I really can't understand the obsession (usually Northerners) for gravy on everything.

I never ever eat gravy unless it is a stew. For me, it belongs on nothing as it just makes everything soggy and just taste of gravy. Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, chips etc should be crisp not made soggy like baby food. Thankfully DH is in full agreement and also never eats gravy*

Do people that love gravy so much not like the actual taste of foods?

You summed up my feelings exactly. I will never understand the appeal of putting a salty brown liquid that makes everything exactly taste the same on food.

Yes yes yes!

My mums from Yorkshire and she has raised me on pancakes and Gravy! We have them quite thick, like the bottom of a Yorkshire pudding, anyone who says 'yuck' but still eats Yorkshire puddings, needs to wind their neck in!

Also note to all-don't yuck someone else's yum!

Adeleskirts · 21/02/2023 17:37

I’ve heard of savoury pancakes but never anyone serving up pancakes with a serving of gravy.

tattygrl · 21/02/2023 17:37

That is bizarre 😄 I can see the logic in a way, though, as I suppose it's the same batter as a Yorkshire pudding.

I love yorkshire pudding but not with gravy. As I said, I want my food to taste of the actual food not of gravy plus I want it to be crisp not soggy

petridishmystery · 21/02/2023 17:38

It’s the same batter as a Yorkshire pudding and yet…

but then me and my sister always used to have a little sugar on the leftover Yorkshire puddings as kids 🤷🏼‍♀️

louise5754 · 21/02/2023 17:40

Just had my pancakes with gravy 😋

Do you have examples of what is eaten with gravy that shouldn't be?

For me nothing should be eaten with gravy. I love food and want to be able to taste it. Also I want foods that should be crisp like roast potatoes, chips, yorkshire pudding to be crisp not soggy.

Bigpinktrain · 21/02/2023 17:42

For those of you who don’t like gravy what do you have on your chips? What do you have on your roasties?

WiltingLobelia · 21/02/2023 17:45

Ponderingwindow · 21/02/2023 14:43

I’ve had fried chicken, a waffle, and gravy and it was the food of the gods. Served at a restaurant owned by a family with a long history of making that style of food. I have also had pale imitations attempt to replicate the authentic version and it was disgusting.

Oh Lord. This sounds amazing.

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2023 17:46

Well it’s not something that appeals to me but if you enjoy them who cares?!
standard sweet toppings for us tonight.
I like gravy but proper gravy made with proper stock, meat juices and whatever else goes into it, NOT bisto or anything like that 🤢
I only put a tiny bit of gravy on my meat as I don’t want it to make my potatoes soggy, I tend to form a little barrier of veg to protect
my crispy roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 21/02/2023 18:27

Yes and it's lovely 😋

For those of you who don’t like gravy what do you have on your chips? What do you have on your roasties?

Mayo on chips, gravy on roasties.

But there's something I'm quite traditional on, a Yorkshire pudding should only ever be served with just gravy. It's a starter, the roast comes afterwards. And it's never, ever made in a muffin tin. It must be made in a roasting tin and individual portions sliced and served,

Bigpinktrain · 21/02/2023 18:53

My MIL serves soup in Yorkshire puddings 😅 it’s actually delicious but very soggy

Bigpinktrain · 21/02/2023 17:42

For those of you who don’t like gravy what do you have on your chips? What do you have on your roasties?

Sometimes a bit of vinegar on chips but most times nothing and certainly nothing on roasties.

I really don't see any need for gravy, sauces etc on food. I do have tomato ketchup on egg and chips but other than that never have sauce, gravy etc

thinkfast · 21/02/2023 19:50

My grandma used to make this as a starter. Not my cup of tea, but it was obviously a thing...

Johnisafckface · 21/02/2023 19:58

I’ve never heard of this abomination! Is it a regional thing?

😂

I love gravy on biscuits but for some reason I can't imagine it on pancakes, i guess cause pancakes are somewhat sweet??

However I remember once when I was a kid we ran out of syrup and my dad boiled water and sugar until it was the consistency of gravy and used that as the syrup. It was nasty.

Moltenpink · 21/02/2023 19:58

I used to like pancakes rolled up with a filling of salmon & prawns in tomato sauce, covered with cheese and baked in the oven

whoami24601 · 21/02/2023 20:10

Oh wow I've found my people! My grandma always made pancakes rather than yorkshire puds and I LOVE them with gravy! The cottage pie type filling is best 😋 unfortunately DD hates gravy (weirdo!) so have been searching for an alternative for years! Can confirm pancake lasagne is good. I had tonight's with leftover Chinese 😂

Pancake day should always be dinner pancakes followed by pudding pancakes!

whoami24601 · 21/02/2023 20:53

OP your picture made it to Yorkshire Live 😂

FarmCat31 · 21/02/2023 20:54

I like pancakes with savoury fillings like minced beef or lamb from the Sunday roast in thick gravy.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 21/02/2023 21:13

Never had gravy in a pancake but we used to have jam on Yorkshire puds

purpledalmation · 21/02/2023 21:14

Heathen

MustDust · 21/02/2023 21:25

Ooh I now want to make pancakes, roll them up and dunk them in a pot of gravy.
