Decent budget wine?

EmJay19 · 13/01/2023 21:51

I love a glass of wine but am awful at choosing so often ending relying on price to get something decent. Usually spend around £9-£12.

Can anyone give some specific recommendations of nice bottles that don’t break the bank?

I like The Hedonist (red), Porcupine Ridge (Sauvignon blanc), these are the two I always have in the house.

Barefoot is revolting!

I like NZ sauv and if you make sure it’s from the Marlborough region you can’t really go wrong. Somethings always on offer or around £7.

It’s consistent as it’s quite a small but prolific region with high UV (I think it’s where the hole in the ozone layer is, or at least I was told that at a tasting). I’ve never had a bottle I didn’t like and I’ve tried most brands.

You can get some really decent wines at Aldi for £6-8 a bottle.

stargirl1701 · 13/01/2023 22:07

19 crimes.

Theawkwardblonde · 13/01/2023 22:07

Another vote for 19 crimes.

McGuigan Shiraz or Merlot is about a fiver in Sainsbury's and it's my go-to budget red. Very, very tasty!

JW13 · 13/01/2023 22:14

Agree re a NZ Sauvignon blanc. You can't really go wrong. I Especially like oyster bay.

I also like:
Y/Yalumba Viognier
For rose, La Vielle Ferme is very reasonable and often on offer.
For red, 19 crimes

Have also just found a white Pinot noir (really a blush) in Aldi and it's amazing. About £10 a bottle on offer at the moment. It's called Left Coast.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I hated 19 Crimes. Also Jam Shed is disgusting.

I never stick to the same though, and always like to see what's on offer and try something new.

Cheap Rioja, but decant it and leave it for a few hours. It softens up and tastes better than much more expensive wines.

This is my tactic too! 😀

If you go to Lidl, some of their wines are given a score of 80 - 90 having been taste tested. I usually go for the ones that score 87 + and it serves us well.

I've had a beautiful bottle recently - a new Zealand pinot gris called Waimea. Absolutely stunning.
Also love 19 crimes as many others seem to!

Iamblossom · 14/01/2023 16:09

Yet to drink a bad red wine from lidl

Findyourneutralspace · 14/01/2023 16:09

Came here to say 19 Crimes, but you'd be better off learning what type of wine you like.
Do you like red or white? What grape? Cabernet sauvignon, temperanillo? Chablis? Pinot grigio?

Narrow down how sweet or dry you like it, and find what you like within that.

InsertSomethingMotivationalHere · 14/01/2023 16:09

Oh and Ned pinot grigio is long - not too acidic and lovely slightly golden colour

InsertSomethingMotivationalHere · 14/01/2023 16:09

*lovely, not long

Withholdingvitalinfo · 14/01/2023 16:09

Barefoot Merlot or Malbec can often be had for £6 a bottle and is delicious if served at room temperature. For a bit more £ Dark Horse Malbec is v good, or Apothic Red.

White I like Picpoul de Pinet, Aldi sometimes have it. Usually £7-8 a bottle

They're all awful!

I like the chianti from Lidl or any chianti tbh, they often come in under what you're spending now

Clarabellawilliamson · 14/01/2023 16:12

Where are you getting your Pinot gris from @InsertSomethingMotivationalHere ? Aldi we're doing an amazing Marlborough one last year but haven't seen it recently.

mondaytosunday · 14/01/2023 16:12

Lindemans. Yum

Barefoot… Noooooo!

Totally disagree. Barefoot Malbec is up there with the best when served at room temp. Has won loads of awards !
