Decent budget wine?

EmJay19 · 13/01/2023 21:51

I love a glass of wine but am awful at choosing so often ending relying on price to get something decent. Usually spend around £9-£12.

Can anyone give some specific recommendations of nice bottles that don’t break the bank?

I'm going to go against the grain and say I hated 19 Crimes. Also Jam Shed is disgusting.

I never stick to the same though, and always like to see what's on offer and try something new.

Completely agree with you - they are too sweet - we even poured one down the sink 😂. It was that terrible… hehe

if you prefer a drier red wine - go for Toro Loco from Aldi or the Amarillo Rioja (?) with orange label and gold netting on.

CornishGem1975 · 15/01/2023 16:42

@MrsDoyle351 The Toro Loco is great, and so cheap. Love a dry wine.

Thanks @cowsaysmoo the vivino app looks really useful.
You can put in a maximum price of £6/7/8 and it will give you the best deals on at that price.

There's one golden rule. If it's a wine that's ever included in a supermarket meal deal for two, avoid! It costs the supermarket about 50p so won't be any good!

Franticbutterfly · 16/01/2023 07:44

Zalze - I had both the red and white served at my wedding.

MyOldCaravan · 16/01/2023 07:58

I love Jam Shed Shiraz, not the white or malbec though

I second the Marlborough Sauvignon blanc.

MintyIguana · 17/01/2023 13:51

Tesco finest Argentinian Malbec is nice. Also Tesco finest Pinot Grigio. Often at club card price. I do shop in Tesco! La Vielle Ferme definitely for rosé when it's on offer.
Agree barefoot and jam shed not nice. Interested to see 19 crimes recommended. I've not tried it. Need for corkscrew put me off 😆.

Porta 6 Lisboa Red Wine is around £7 ish and pretty nice.

I prefer Portuguese, French or Italian these days, and definitely on a budget. The big, sugary New World stuff isn't my bag at all.

Clarabellawilliamson · 18/01/2023 12:15

I don't know if there is any truth in it, but I have a theory that supermarket selected wines are better value than big name vineyards. A vineyard will have to sell its wines in a good year or not but someone from Aldi has to taste a load of different Malbecs before choosing which one to have on their shelves.....perhaps?!

Spud90 · 27/01/2023 20:42

I really like wolf blass red label shiraz cabernet. It’s usually £5 and it’s my favourite. I like villa antinori toscana 2019 too but that’s £18 so I don’t buy it often.

AuntieMarys · 27/01/2023 20:44

Aldi do a good organic Malbec and organic pinot grigio.
Zagare Vermentino is lovely

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 27/01/2023 20:57

Another Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc fan here. Delicious.

Noras · 27/01/2023 21:06

Any Gavi if looking for a white.

Same. I find them too "sickly" almost.
I like the Aldi chianti as a cheap one but like previous folks, usually go NZSB for white. Or Lidl Pecorino if I can get it

Try vivino app. Always use it, always get decent wine. Waitrose has really good selection in a range of £7 to £10.

We've recently discovered Lidl's Organic Processco and the bonus is, there's no hangover!

Yellowdays · 15/07/2023 23:48

Montepulciano d'abruzzo

Breakingpoint1961 · 16/07/2023 03:36

Not sure if you can really recommend wine. I think it's purely down to personal taste.

For instance, I like Barefoot (among others) some are saying it's disgusting, it's simply your own personal taste, so I rarely 'recommend' wine, I just say "I really like this wine"

That's not helpful at all OPConfused

Rina66 · 16/07/2023 05:20

The Guv'nor from Majestic, a dry red Tempranillo, it's the best cheaper red wine I've tasted.£8.99.

Breakingpoint1961 · 16/07/2023 11:12

@Rina66 I've also had that recommended to me but haven't tried it yet..

Harebrain · 16/07/2023 11:27

If you live near a branch of Majestic Wine, they always have a variety of wines open on their tasting counter. You can go in and try them without feeling obliged to buy. The staff will always suggest wines you might like based on your tastes. Tasting a few different wines can be a good starting point.

Get a copy of this and work your way through! If you like white then Tesco Finest do some nice ones often on offer - try the Picpoul de pinet, Albarino, or Pecarino
