Decent budget wine?

I love a glass of wine but am awful at choosing so often ending relying on price to get something decent. Usually spend around £9-£12.

Can anyone give some specific recommendations of nice bottles that don’t break the bank?

Are you looking for red or white?
If red, do you like strong and punchy or softer?
Do you like wines that taste of oak and tobacco?

these will help narrow down the recs.

We get through quite a lot of this Aussie Shiraz; it’s not exactly subtle but it tastes like it’s supposed to & there is plenty of flavour.

For red wine I love either El Duque de Miralta Rioja from M&S or Beronia Rioja from Waitrose. Both have higher and lower priced versions, all are good.

For white wine I like the Ned Sauvignon Blanc.

I've never had a Montepulciano (red) that I didn't like. At the moment I love Malbec - the Sainsbury’s TTD Morador Malbec is lovely. It's £9 but often on special offer.

@Clarabellawilliamson I have a quick look at it's from Majestic. Someone was kind enough to give me a bottle. Hmm, never been to a majestic before! May see if there's one around here

Clarabellawilliamson · 14/01/2023 17:03

Thanks @InsertSomethingMotivationalHere I might have to have a look, I've never been to majestic but I remember my dad buying wine there when I was younger!

Jam Shed is revolting.

gogohmm · 14/01/2023 17:06

Go to lidl and look at the ratings. The wine tour ones have never failed us

DisneyChops · 14/01/2023 17:07

I absolutely love Gallo Chardonnay. Nothing comes close, not even the expensive ones.

Freysimo · 14/01/2023 17:08

I like white riojas, but there not much choice. Marques de Los Zancos white rioja is really good and only £5.25 from Tesco.

19 Crimes, or whatever has the biggest reduction to get it into my price range of £7-10.

MzLucky · 14/01/2023 17:12

I just drink wines from France or Italy as every other country should be banned from making and selling wine 🤢🤮

I buy from Tesco and to be fair there budget wines in red, rose and fizz are all good. I've tested them all just to be sure 😂

frostygarden · 14/01/2023 17:23

Love an ice cold glass of Villa Maria...usually about £9-10.

Macon Villages is my go to white, I grab the Louie Jadot one when on offer, or any other white Burgandy does the job.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/01/2023 17:31

What sort of wine do you want? Red, white, sparkling, different types?

I mainly drink fizz and am admittedly not fussy and perfectly happy with Lidl/Aldi cava for a fiver or so.

I also look out for offers such as 'buy 6 get 25% off'

You could always try a cheap bottle of a type you like from Aldi or Lidl and if you like it, it's a winner. There's a very cheap Spanish red in Aldi that gets rave reviews from people who like that type of wine.

If not, it's only a few quid so then try something else different/a bit more expensive. It's very subjective, as this thread shows.

Campo Viejo Rioja Tempranillo and under £10

Jam Shed is revolting.

I quite like it actually, it’s personal choice/taste like everything.

Topbird29 · 14/01/2023 17:37

I like con sur wines, and also those by Bruce jack. Also find some of the tesco finest are reasonable- their torrentes and reisling re good. Dh is a member ifvwine society, and once paid a one off fee, can get some really nice wines for £7 a bottle (can order mixed up cases for delivery).

LordEmsworth · 14/01/2023 17:39

Do you have an independent wine shop near you? I do (realise I am lucky!) and regularly buy a half case of 6 bottles for £50, they ask what I like & choose for me. Never had a bad bottle, and some I loved.

McGuigan Shiraz or Merlot is about a fiver in Sainsbury's and it's my go-to budget red. Very, very tasty!

Agree with this (well, the Shiraz bit!). The McGuigan black label Shiraz is a big wine and you can usually find it for less than £6.

teamonster34 · 14/01/2023 17:45

I drink red mostly but rose in the summer . I like pale roses so Kylie and oriel are my faves as well as La ville Ferme. Yellow tail and 19 crimes are nice reds. I usually look for £9 bottles which are reduced to £7. Isla Negra is £5 in Tesco and is a good basic red if money is tight. I prefer something a bit richer and full bodied but it is very drinkable for a cheap red,

White wine I like a New Zealand Sauvignon - anything from the Marlborough region
For reds Rioja or Shiraz - currently have a glass of Ramon Bilbao in my hand and we are taking a bottle of Barossa Ink to friends in a bit - all around the £10 price point.
for Fizz I like the English Sparkling but these are generally £20 ish so a bit of a treat.

Coxspurplepippin · 14/01/2023 17:46

Gee, I must really like that wine......
