Decent budget wine?

EmJay19 · 13/01/2023 21:51

I love a glass of wine but am awful at choosing so often ending relying on price to get something decent. Usually spend around £9-£12.

Can anyone give some specific recommendations of nice bottles that don’t break the bank?

Also Tesco finest range is excellent - they have most types of wine at great prices - really like the finest Rioja.

Their Finest Passerina is lovely, similar to a Pinot Grigio but not as acidic

This is a lovely Rioja from Lidl.

Also agree with PPs on Campo Viejo Temperanillo.

I like Barefoot's Pinot Grigio and Malbec, surprised to see them have so much hate on here.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 14/01/2023 18:01

If you're buying a Malbec make sure it's Argentinian

If you're buying a sauv blanc make sure it's from Marlborough.

Crémant or cava for white sparkling wine.

Lately I've been enjoying this Torres Celeste Crianza

Use Vivino app , you can take a photo of the bottle and it will tell you the score of wine.
Waitrose has really good wines for around 8-10 quid.

I just drink wines from France or Italy as every other country should be banned from making and selling wine 🤢🤮

Simply not true! Beautiful wines produced in South America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Portugal, America - I could carry on…. all enjoyed by me and many others - as total sales show!
Obviously everyone to their own!

Have a look at less fashionable grapes/regions.

eg for fizz, Aldi Crémant du Jura is loads better than the proseccos in the same price bracket.
Sainsbury's TTD Grüner Veltliner is a great dry, minerally white, or try Yalumba Viognier for something fruitier and fuller bodied.
For reds, Graffigna Reserve Malbec is soft and smoky.

JuneOsborne · 14/01/2023 18:20

Most supermarket own brand wine is actually excellent. The buyers don't want you to think they don't know wine and because of economies of scale, they usually get it cheap!

For example, Morrisons own brand English sparkling is actually nyetimber, but much cheaper.

Wiglio · 14/01/2023 18:21

Secret Cellar, Waitrose £8.99 The Shiraz and Sauvignon blanc are great, the Pinot Grigio is a bit too tangy for me, often 33% off.

mamaca · 14/01/2023 18:28

Bought a lovely red in M&S a he other day, it was Sicilian - something Capuccio, was the nicest I've tried in a while!

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 14/01/2023 18:30

19 Crimes - their sauv blanc is beautiful and I'm not normally a sauv blanc person, and all the reds are gorgeous.
Apothic red
Diablo
Beefsteak Club - served in lots of restaurants, but you can pick up at Tesco for £6-8

katesbushh · 14/01/2023 19:44

19 crimes the Banished

And lidls version of whispering angel, it's better than actual whispering angel.

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 14/01/2023 19:53

Super cold Villa Maria or Mud house, both gorgeous.

Cornelious · 14/01/2023 19:55

Villa Maria (sauv Blanc not the Chardonnay)
Brancot estate
Mud house

Basically any NZ Marlborough

sheeplikessleep · 14/01/2023 19:58

Wairau Cove, often on offer in Tesco. Since I’ve found that, I have got far less adventurous as I just buy that.

sheeplikessleep · 14/01/2023 20:00

Meant to say the Sauvignon Blanc one!

hairycabbage · 14/01/2023 20:01

For budget wines I like Lidl Delle Venezie

Withholdingvitalinfo · 14/01/2023 16:09

Barefoot Merlot or Malbec can often be had for £6 a bottle and is delicious if served at room temperature. For a bit more £ Dark Horse Malbec is v good, or Apothic Red.

White I like Picpoul de Pinet, Aldi sometimes have it. Usually £7-8 a bottle

All the dark horse wines are lovely red or white

EmJay19 · 14/01/2023 20:29

Amazing 🤩
great responses so far keep them coming.

I thought for red I was Pinot noir or Rioja but actually just had a Malbec which I love so thinking I don’t really know…

agree about Sauvignon for white. I also like Pinot Grigio/ picpul.

used to work in Sainsos as a teen and I remember a guy coming in and buying a case of £4 wine which he suggested and it was amazing… hoping for more like this..

Basically the exact wine brands I avoid

maybabymama · 15/01/2023 16:17

Aldi, £4.49

Lcb123 · 15/01/2023 16:18

try some less popular regions, such as Romania or Hungary. Much better value. Otherwise I have Wine Society membership, all their wines are excellent and much better value than supermarket. Avoid those big brands, so mass produced and packed with additives
