Tinned potato shortage

Is there some kind of weird tinned potatoes deficit ?

Tried last week in Waitrose, none and no gap on shelf. Thought I'd be clever today and go to Iceland first and again nothing, still none in Waitrose and just checked Ocado and none listed, not even out of stock just not there.

Only wanted to make a fish cake recipe from the new Jamie book ,

They've probably discontinued them because they are so yuk! 🤣🤣

Ladiz · 23/09/2022 18:16

You could substitute a real potato?

Quveas · 23/09/2022 18:17

It's a well kept secret, but potatoes come in an untinned variety, and you can do everything with them, and more, than the tinned variety.

Orangio · 23/09/2022 18:27

They sell potatoes in tins?

Dannexe · 23/09/2022 18:28

They’re hiding them with the frozen peppers (yes I know, also available fresh..)

Boxin · 23/09/2022 18:29

I haven’t noticed OP but some of the replies you have received are snobby and even ableist.
Not everyone can afford to buy and cook potato’s and a tin of 40p ones are much easier to prepare than having to scrub and peel and chop.

Airymanning · 23/09/2022 18:29

I buy tinned potatoes all the time!I love them

Try co op.

OwBist · 23/09/2022 18:30

They had them in Lidl last week. Nadiya did a quick supper recipe with them which I thought looked great!

Tinned potatoes have taken off in popularity due to them being an air fryer delicacy. Google it. Its true!

Northernsoullover · 23/09/2022 18:32

Yes I have tried them and they are very nice air fried.

Tinned potatoes don't go off and can be kept as a cupboard staple. Don't be so snobby.

Galarunner · 23/09/2022 18:35

I just remembered I love tinned potatoes. Haven't had any in years must get some if they are available. Maybe with some tinned red salmon for that full reliving a lovely tea at my nans .

saraclara · 23/09/2022 18:37

Tinned potatoes are very valuable to food banks. Many people are living in bedsits with just one ring, and also the energy to boil potatoes is going to be an issue for many. So tins of potatoes are very much welcomed.

They sell potatoes in tins?

They do.

They also sell beans in tins, disgraceful.

RoseMartha · 23/09/2022 18:38

I havent looked for tinned potatoes. They don't taste great do they but will eat them if I have to.

I have been struggling to find strawberries though.

MrJi · 23/09/2022 18:41

Tinned potatoes are really nice sautéed, or for potatas bravas. Fried tinned spuds done on a mini gas cooker on the beach, with a sausage. Heaven.

Orangio · 23/09/2022 18:42

I didn't mean to be snobby! I didn't realise they were cooked, which from some of the comments it seems they are. That does make them a different product to a cheaper bag of raw baby potatoes (which you also don't have to peel or chop). Tinned potatoes make more sense if they are cooked! Consider me educated 😊

QuietYou · 23/09/2022 18:43

Every other post I see on many of the FB groups I'm in is posts about air frying tinned potatoes.

TheDogsMother · 23/09/2022 18:46

Well Nadia Hussain uses them in Indian dishes so they can't be all bad.

strengthinnumber · 23/09/2022 18:46

Bloody TikTok. They're all over TikTok being roasted in air fryers.

Galarunner · 23/09/2022 18:47

Anything in a tin is cooked. It's part of the tinning process. All tinned food is safe to eat hot or cold.

aliceinshackles · 23/09/2022 18:47

Aldi has them

VinoDino · 23/09/2022 18:49

Also came on to say wouldn't have ever considered them until I got my air fryer. I'm now a convert.

ohsuzannah · 23/09/2022 18:50

There's a popular air fryer recipe for roast potatoes using tinned ones, maybe that's why?
