Tinned potato shortage

karmalama · 23/09/2022 18:07

Is there some kind of weird tinned potatoes deficit ?

Tried last week in Waitrose, none and no gap on shelf. Thought I'd be clever today and go to Iceland first and again nothing, still none in Waitrose and just checked Ocado and none listed, not even out of stock just not there.

Only wanted to make a fish cake recipe from the new Jamie book ,

Sainsburys have them. I always have some in the cupboard. They keep their shape well so are great in Spanish omelette and lovely sautéed. Plus on an 80s salad with tinned salmon as a previous poster has said.

Stopsnowing · 23/09/2022 20:56

Now I want some!

JacquelineCarlyle · 23/09/2022 21:06

I love tinned potatoes too - so quick and easy! How long do you cook them in the air fryer for?

I'd say a few lorries worth are in my Dad's food cupboard, he's obsessed with running out of them Hmm

So that's where they all are!

How is it snobbish - snobby isn't a word - to point out that if you can't get tinned potatoes ( that's what the OP said, not me) you can substitute actual potatoes? And if she going to cook them in a dish now they won't be going off. Although if you keep them in the right conditions, they don't go off very quickly anyway. Potatoes are dirt cheap.

It might not be snobbish but it’s pathetically patronising.

Air fryed tinned potatoes are the best. Loads of salt and paprika.. delicious, cheap, whats not to love.

BCBird · 23/09/2022 21:36

They are the devil's food🙈

How long for? Do you need to put any oil in them?

PestorPeston · 23/09/2022 21:44

Best thing ever for making aioli, but Morrisons have had empty shelves occasionally.

karmalama · 23/09/2022 22:12

Thanks for all the helpful replies

@Quveas are you always that rude and patronising ?
I have a fridge full of potatoes ( and oddly other vegetables which I also know you can cook )
I just specifically wanted some for one particular recipe from the new Jamie Oliver book, which I planned to cook in my Horsebox next weekend where I only have one gas ring so parboiling potatoes is not optimal or easy .
Maybe stick to AIBU in future , posters tend to be more civilised in this section.

Yeh every week I add them to the Internet shop but they never have them

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2022 22:22

I use tinned potatoes when we're away in the camper van. Great in curry, stew, frittata. roast or fried. I haven't used them in the air fryer but its a great idea.

HangingOver · 23/09/2022 22:24

I bloody love tinned potatoes with melted butter. Don't microwave them though, the can explode Grin

womaninatightspot · 23/09/2022 22:24

Ive only recently started buying tinned potatoes so go in cheap curries and they are surprisingly nice and help thicken sauces beautifully. 33p a tin from tesco/ aldi too

PinkButtercups · 23/09/2022 22:26

Because all I've seen is everyone air frying them!

Starlightstarbright1 · 23/09/2022 22:28

I bought a tin last week for the air fryer.. probably not bought any in 20 years so may be a factor

SirChenjins · 23/09/2022 22:28

There have been several threads about tinned potatoes on here, with some predicting a national shortage as a result. It appears they were right!

Tinned potatoes are brilliant for frittatas - we buy them often.

stillherenow · 23/09/2022 22:31

Asda has them OP!

CaptainBarbosa · 23/09/2022 22:33

I hope not, they are the only potatoes DS will eat!

I've tried fresh, peeled and boiled, but nope doesn't like them 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Just wants his tinned potatoes with his freybentos pie. This child would survive a apocalypse that only left tinned food behind, he'd be fine haha

Loveatortie · 23/09/2022 22:38

Tinned potatoes are a larder essential. Unfortunately they are not tinned in uk.

Plump82 · 23/09/2022 22:44

I've just added some to my weekly shop. Love them heated with melted butter and some salt and pepper. Hmmm can taste them now!

I haven’t noticed OP but some of the replies you have received are snobby and even ableist.
Not everyone can afford to buy and cook potato’s and a tin of 40p ones are much easier to prepare than having to scrub and peel and chop.

Hang on. You can buy 2kg of potatoes for a pound and you are suggesting people struggling financially should buy a 40p tin? A tin that would be what, one meals worth? This makes no sense. Nothing to do with snobbery. And if you can't peel and cook a potato then there is something wrong with you

ClinkeyMonkey · 24/09/2022 00:32

And if you can't peel and cook a potato then there is something wrong with you

Um, I think you'll find that this is where the ableist comment is coming from. As in, not everyone has the manual dexterity, for whatever reason, to peel potatoes - they may suffer from arthritis, for example. So yeah, something wrong ...

@deedledeedledum

The point above and the electricity costs.

The thing about being poor is you often cannot afford to do the cheapest thing, because it’s a bigger initial outlay - if you are literally counting pennies somethings you will have 40p but you won’t have a pound
