Tinned potato shortage

karmalama · 23/09/2022 18:07

Is there some kind of weird tinned potatoes deficit ?

Tried last week in Waitrose, none and no gap on shelf. Thought I'd be clever today and go to Iceland first and again nothing, still none in Waitrose and just checked Ocado and none listed, not even out of stock just not there.

Only wanted to make a fish cake recipe from the new Jamie book ,

OP posts:

It’s probably because Nadiya and Jamie have used them in recipes recently. I think they call it the Delia effect. The other week dh fancied corned beef hash after seeing Chris Eubank cook it on celebrity masterchef. Not a tin in sight in sainsburys!

There's a popular air fryer recipe for roast potatoes using tinned ones, maybe that's why?

Isn’t it literally the case that you just put them in the air fryer?

Tinned potatoes don't go off and can be kept as a cupboard staple. Don't be so snobby.

How is it snobbish - snobby isn't a word - to point out that if you can't get tinned potatoes ( that's what the OP said, not me) you can substitute actual potatoes? And if she going to cook them in a dish now they won't be going off. Although if you keep them in the right conditions, they don't go off very quickly anyway. Potatoes are dirt cheap.

RJnomore1 · 23/09/2022 18:57

I love tinned potatoes although rarely have them, what’s the Jamie recipe?

QuebecBagnet · 23/09/2022 19:00

I was about to say it’ll be because of TikTok. I bought a tin last week for the first time in 30 years because of the TikTok airfryer recipes

MenaiMna · 23/09/2022 19:01

Sainsburys, Hubbard's label 32p

It's a well kept secret, but potatoes come in an untinned variety, and you can do everything with them, and more, than the tinned variety.

😂😂

Well Nadia Hussain uses them in Indian dishes so they can't be all bad.

we have a few tins as they are recommended for currys

need to put them on my shopping list 😀

Georgyporky · 23/09/2022 19:24

I'm very much a "cook from scratch" person, but they're a very useful cupboard standby - just rinse well before using.

greenhousegal · 23/09/2022 19:28

I have two tins of them left, can't get any more at the moment, don't know why!

I use them for Spanish tortilla, they work brilliantly in it when sliced as they don't break up, and as they are already cooked, the tortilla takes half the time. A good rinse and drain in a colander for a few minutes and good to go. At a push I cube them and make potato salad too. They are versatile and good to have.

I don't use many spuds but if I do have too many I boil and mash without milk or butter and freeze in portions. I also par boil some, coat in oil and freeze for roasties.

Is there a shortage of tins??

Dannexe · 23/09/2022 19:41

There’s about to be a potato shortage I believe. It’s been spoken about on other threads.

I use them in currys, for easy roast potatoes, for tartiflette and for moussaka.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/09/2022 19:42

Maybe OP wants white potatoes, those that aren't in tins always seem to be brown.

sweetpeapea · 23/09/2022 19:44

I have never heard of a tinned potato. How long ago did they leave the shelves?!

hellosunshineagainxxx · 23/09/2022 19:50

I have seen loads of people buying these to do roast potatoes in the air fryer so imagine demand has risen tons as its a tiktok trend

AdaColeman · 23/09/2022 19:50

I use tinned potatoes for Russian salad or frittata, so they're a store cupboard staple here.

Northernsoullover · 23/09/2022 19:56

@Quveas apologies for my colloquial use of ' snobby'. Please don't be SNOBBISH about it. BTW 'snobby' it's in the OED so there! 😉

LadyAethelfled · 23/09/2022 20:00

I love tinned potatoes! They taste the same and I like that they don't go off so always have some in the cupboard as a back up. My comfort food is tinned potato and tinned meat in winter 😂
And it's nothing to do with not being able to afford fresh food, I just like it. Tinned food is underrated in my opinion.

EmmaH2022 · 23/09/2022 20:02

it's thanks to MN I realised these are good and work well in the air fryer.

None in Aldi for a couple of weeks. They are so handy as a store cupboard staple, especially if you don't know how much you'll be home for dinner in a week. This week being a prime example, out twice, didn't know when eating at mum's or mine, next week similar.

FourChimneys · 23/09/2022 20:06

Our local food bank helpfully has a weekly list of what they are short of.

This week the list has included tinned potatoes and tinned carrots. Sainsburys had plenty of both when I went to get some.

I sometimes used tinned potatoes when I was a student and when I had just started working (but not as often as I used Smash).

cultkid · 23/09/2022 20:08

Mate nobody eats them

Had one in Pizza Hut as a kid and puked it up
Tasted horrible

Rushingfool · 23/09/2022 20:11

I buy them for camping trips. Had trouble finding them back in mid to late August.

Badger1970 · 23/09/2022 20:14

I'd say a few lorries worth are in my Dad's food cupboard, he's obsessed with running out of them Hmm

EwwSprouts · 23/09/2022 20:16

The tinned baby potatoes are best. Took a large delivery for the food bank today so unlikely a national shortage. Some other items didn't make it.

cbatopainttheshed · 23/09/2022 20:25

OMG I'd forgotten about tinned potatoes! I used to loved them cold straight out the tin!

As a kid mum would chop them in half and cook them in the chip pan... yummy!!

Bluebellbike · 23/09/2022 20:44

They had lots in Farmfoods near me yesterday
