Tinned potato shortage

Is there some kind of weird tinned potatoes deficit ?

Tried last week in Waitrose, none and no gap on shelf. Thought I'd be clever today and go to Iceland first and again nothing, still none in Waitrose and just checked Ocado and none listed, not even out of stock just not there.

Only wanted to make a fish cake recipe from the new Jamie book ,

You’ve unintentionally hit the nail on the head about food poverty. Some people will be able to afford 40p for a tin of potatoes in their shop but not £1 for a kg. Yes it doesn’t make sense long term but it’s still a fact. Years ago I wrote a dissertation on obesity and food poverty. Some people won’t have access to a potato peeler. They may not be able to afford the gas to cook normal potatoes. How lucky you are that you don’t get this.

and as for something being wrong with you if you can’t peel and chop potatoes, yes it’s called being disabled. Or having fibromyalgia, or EDS, or POTs…..or if you’re really lucky having all 3. 😩😀

Hang on. You can buy 2kg of potatoes for a pound and you are suggesting people struggling financially should buy a 40p tin? A tin that would be what, one meals worth? This makes no sense. Nothing to do with snobbery. And if you can't peel and cook a potato then there is something wrong with you

Hopefully the subsequent posts have helped you to become slightly less informed.

Wow. Who knew? Presumably because of the sudden popularity of air fryers.

These threads are always baffling to me. "Three supermarkets near me don't have potatoes - must be a national shortage!" And then someone comes on to say "I found some the other day in Asda". How does that help? You might live 300 miles away from the OP! What is anyone actually looking for here, confirmation that there is indeed a shortage?

When I first worked, my employer used to make me lunch using tinned stewed steak, tinned potatoes, and tinned peas. I loved it!

Ooh! I fancy that now although I never buy tinned steak because of the farming practices where it comes from - destruction of rainforest etc.. The same with Fray Bentos pies.

This is such a bigger problem though.on all food threads it's really starting to be depressing how such a large portion of the population just.font.get.it.and that's bad because it's caused judgement but also means nothing will change.

Yes there is a shortage. Potato crops were badly damaged by the heat this summer:

Food producers say nearly 1.5 million tonnes of potato crops could be lost due to the heatwave — a drop of 20 per cent.
