Will you be having it tomorrow?
Links or no links, what are you serving it with?

Galvantula · 31/12/2019 22:14

Oh it doesn't have links in. But I've had those before, from butchers further west I believe.

SkateAway · 31/12/2019 22:20

People who cook the pastry separately... don't you miss the gooey, gravy soaked layer?

As for short crust, that can get tae fuck.

I'm in Ayrshire, apparently links are the thing here.

Galvantula · 31/12/2019 22:21

Serving with whatever we find... Carrots, tatties probably. Sweet potato for DS2 cos he loves it 😅

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 22:22

I've no dessert yet, will see what Dd wants but my guess is profiteroles.

@SkateAway the gooey layer is the best bit 😍😍

betternamechangeforthisone · 31/12/2019 22:23

Mmmmmmm that gooey layer of pastry

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 22:24

Yes, the gooey underneath bit.

DP isn't a big fan of the pastry. God, I picked a good un. More for me. 😋

AdaColeman · 31/12/2019 22:33

Oh my goodness! Steak pie with sausage in it sounds amazing! I could murder a plate of that!

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 22:43

I won't lie, it's absolutely amazing Grin

Links with steak pie? Since when was this a thing? Not in Fife!

AteAllTheAfterEights · 31/12/2019 22:59

I leave some gravy underneath and cook on baking paper so still a bit gooey. I’m cooking for 18 so it’s the only way to get it all out at the same time

AdaColeman · 31/12/2019 23:03

You should post a photo of your pie Brillo, like that fab series you did of three or four meals from one cut of meat.
Happy New Year! Wine Wine

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 23:03

18Shock
I'm cooking for two, and the other one is Dd so no pressure.

AteAllTheAfterEights · 31/12/2019 23:08

Yep! 6 butchers steak pies - wish me luck!

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2019 23:09

I loved doing that Ada
Happy New Year to you tooGrin
I'll post a photo of our pie on the 2nd.

Homemade with links (cut into bite sized pieces) here but pastry on the side though cooked over a layer of the gravy so it still soaks in 😉 btw originally from Glasgow but live elsewhere now so it may be a west coast thing as my mum always made it with links!! Serving it with Mash and either peas or broccoli. Happy New Year all 🥳 🥂

chipsandpeas · 31/12/2019 23:26

steak pie, pork sausage and mash potatoes

Lucked · 31/12/2019 23:31

Home made with beef links probably with green beans and mash.

I think the links started as a poor thing (and therefore more common on the west coast) because they couldn’t afford to fill a whole pie with steak and sausage is obviously more affordable.

CooCooCoo · 31/12/2019 23:36

Steak pie no links!
Although DH has just announced pigs in blankets as a wee side extra 🤣 I will NOT turn that down

soupmaker · 31/12/2019 23:41

House currently smells of beef stew bubbling gently in slow cooker. The smell of New Year here. No sausage. Known in our house as "stew wi a lid" as I do the puff pastry in the oven with a thin layer of stew gravy underneath. Will serve with roast carrot and parsnip, steamed broccoli, braised red cabbage and new potatoes. Yum. Also have a trifle given to us by our fabulous next door neighbour for pudding. May also be doing a cheeky prawn cocktail for starters.

Afrigginggoat · 01/01/2020 00:44

Steak pie here, puff pastry above and below, mash and veg. Also a chicken and leek pie for non steak eaters

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 01/01/2020 05:24

"I think the links started as a poor thing (and therefore more common on the west coast)"

???

Coldhandscoldheart · 01/01/2020 06:02

Am now googling whether I can turn shortcrust into puff & trying to decide if worth the effort /risk.

AgentProvocateur · 01/01/2020 06:07

You’ve made me homesick. I’m living overseas for a couple of years and it’s far too hot for steak pie here 😰 Lang may your lums reek (as the Broons would say).
