melsy · 26/08/2004 22:30

Would like to make one for dd's 1st birthday , do you think I would be able to get hold of a HUGE paper cup for the base IFYWIM !!!?????or would it be best to make it myself out of baking paper ?? & any ideas on the base to cook it in ?? Want to make it look quite authentically like an old fashioned cup cake. Would also like to make tiny mini ones to sit beside it and give to all the kiddies after, can you get mini paper bases?? oooh and some sugar icing wrapped parcels any ideas ???

Do you have one of those Roses/Quality Strett tins you get around Xmas time. They are the perfect fit for a round cake. I must admit though I have never frozen a cake though before. Actually coming to think of it you might have a problem getting the cake in and out of the tin.

FWIW - my mum who has made lots of decorated cakes - always says if you are making a sponge cake to make it as close as possible to the day as you can. If you are adding fruit like fresh cherries or apple or pinapple, the cake will not keep as long, and has a moister consistency.

Fairy Cake recipe

4oz Butter
4oz caster sugar
2 eggs
4oz Self Raising Flour
1 tabspn boiled water (hand hot)
Method as before.

This can be multiplied up by 2 (ie 4 eggs)

This can be used as a layer cake (I use it for gateaux) steamed syrup pudding (put syrup at the bottem and cook in pudding basin in Microwave)

Microwaving it might work as you will be icing the top anyway - but the sponge is slightly heavier when M/Wed.

To stop it falling in the middle leave it in the oven longer than you think it needs

Good Luck
PS Where do you live (could I come & Help?)

What about a Madeira cake recipe? I did one for DS1's birthday last week in a pudding basin (to make the spider's body of course ) and it really rose out of the bowl - a bit too much tbh bit I had to trim it off anyway. Could you try that in a tin - good idea MB
(BTW - I think it's GREAT that this thread is still going strong - my DH thinks this site is all about baby advice - how wrong he is

Metrobaby · 07/09/2004 19:39

melsey - did you have another go at the cake? If so, how did it go?

Soupy - is your chocolate fudge cake as good as your biscuits?

SoupDragon · 07/09/2004 19:39

I'd like to think so...

SoupDragon · 07/09/2004 19:40

WRT getting the cake out of the tin, you put the cake on the lid, using it as the base and the deep bit as the lid.

Well girls I finally have a RISEN cake YIPPEEEEEE , but I burnt it !!!!!!!(how typical is that).I was running up and down stairs to console dd having apaplexy from her cot , whilst answering the telephone, the door and shouting at dh !!!!!! I was most upset after all the trial runs. Ive come a long way , but now I still have to make a gooodun next week for the real thing eeeeeekkkkkk. Its all thanx to Nigella and her fairy cake mix and I managed to use the magimix with paddle , 1 less egg & only a pinch of baking powder , and a drop of milk poured in at the end and pulsed.

melsy · 16/09/2004 17:41

FLPPPIN HEC has someone cursed me !!! I just managed to make the lovelist sponge (I THOUGHT), but when I was just taking out of the brioche cake tin it flippin broke in half and left the rest stuck to the tin GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRR. Ive now gotta start all over again tonight!!!!!!!!!

so far we have had 2 flops , one risen, one burnt & now one cracked and slpit in half. If it gets done and it looks anything like a cake it will be a MIRACLE !!!

Although I do have 30 mini cupcakes that are nice !!!

only less than 48 hrs to the big afternoon, the hosue is a tip , egg flower and icing sugar EVERYWERE !!! & to top it all DD's been very sick today too , I MUST BE MAADDD !!!!

melsy · 16/09/2004 18:57

which fd ?? the paper ones ? I gave up on them as looked a bit naff !! so Im using a big brioche tin instead.

Ive now put the next one(5 or 6th !!!) in the oven , this time Ive greased the damn thing , dont trust non stick !!!!!!!

fairydust · 16/09/2004 21:28

best of luck would love to see a photo when all is done

Tommy · 16/09/2004 21:29

Definitely a photo please and I hope you're making lots of trifle with allt he not wanted cake....
Good luck!

melsy · 16/09/2004 22:19

Well im embarreessed to say this but this one came out LOVELY , just to collapse (yes I said COLLAPSE FFS) when the sugar paste was draped over it and to mkae matters worse DH saw the whole thing happen and thought it very hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM very very , so the only thing is to make a much denser cake that will withstand the weight of the top !! If the one I do tomoorow morning is a total product failure I dont know what im gonna do , apart from quickly whisking up 30 fairy cakes as was suggested MOST SENSIBLY by soupy !!!

OP posts:
KatieMac · 16/09/2004 22:21

If greasing the tin doesn't work - grease it then put a spoon of flour & caster sugar in, and dust the inside of the tin
Good luck
K
