Would like to make one for dd's 1st birthday , do you think I would be able to get hold of a HUGE paper cup for the base IFYWIM !!!?????or would it be best to make it myself out of baking paper ?? & any ideas on the base to cook it in ?? Want to make it look quite authentically like an old fashioned cup cake. Would also like to make tiny mini ones to sit beside it and give to all the kiddies after, can you get mini paper bases?? oooh and some sugar icing wrapped parcels any ideas ???

Melsy - how has it turned out?

if it still collpases, have you tried the Buttermilk Birthday cake recipe from Nigella's Domestic Goddess? She talks about how it can take any amount of icing - but is still moist and tasty!

I can vouch for the recipe - I've used it for the last three years to make various Thomas cakes (Thomas, Henry and last week Gordon) - and draped them with loads of ready roll icing. It's yummy!

Haven't read all the thread - so aplogies if I'm duplicating.

wobblyknicks · 17/09/2004 09:55

And for an added threat - warn him that the cake doesn't necessarily get put in his hair today - it may be when he least expects it - when the cake is old and dry and mouldy and he has just got ready to go out somewhere exciting and important!!!

melsy · 17/09/2004 09:58

WMSL !!!!!!!!

apologys but butercream icing makes me wanna hurl !!!! its a throw back to when I was about 9 in USA and we went to old food market in LA and there was this HUGE buttercream piggy topped fairy cake & my mum and dad made me stay sitting next to the stall until Id eaten it all!!!!!!!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 17/09/2004 10:01

Why on earth did they make you do that???

Prettybird · 17/09/2004 10:08

I'm not sure if you were talking about my suggestion - but I wasn't talking about the icing - the butermilk goes into the cake recipe (or a mix of semi-skimmed milk and a wee bit of youghurt, if you can't get buttermilk, as I couldn't last week).

Don't blame you for not liking buttermilk icing if you were forced to eat a whole load. Having said that, I made some buttermilk icing last week (also for ds' birthday - as well as his Gordon cake for his party, I also made a "Treasure Chest" cake for him to take into the nursery) - and there was a wee bit left over which ds is being allowed to eat little by little as a "treat" (HE wanted it!). I also used wee bits of it to help sandwich together bits of Gordon and his tender.

melsy · 17/09/2004 17:25

Soz prety bird was talking abut the buttermilk icing stuff , which I think I may have used to glue the sugar paste to the sponge !!!whats the difference between buttercream and buttermilk ?? I was very confused this morning !!having gone to bed at 12 & up at 5:30 !!!

I have to announce that I have a FINALLY about 2 hours ago(had to lcear up BIGGG MESS), fully finished cake in its cake box all ready for tommorow & yes its my homemade one (not bought if you thought I given in!! NOT ON YER NELLY !!!!) SO YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEE I kepp going to look at it as I cant believe its there !!! its a bit raggedy but Im still quite chuffed Ive done it & DH IS VERY IMPRESSED !! Im not sure he excpected it to be there either !!!
