How does it work? I love a cookery book...

I’d be in! I can’t really afford to buy new books every month but I guess most recipes can be found online? I did the one a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it

This post has just reminded me how much I love Made In India from my first cookery book club. Think I'll go and dig it out.

We used to have a book choice and an online choice so that everyone could join in regardless of if they have the book.

I'm in a few Facebook cookbook clubs and whilst o enjoy them, they all only include newly released books. One of my favourite things about the mn club was that older books were covered- those that were owned by most and or could be picked up cheaply second hand ( when we covered river cafe books it was 99p second hand on amazon so achievable for most)

I would, but I'm doing low carb at the moment so am limited in what I can cook. Great idea tho!

Yes, I'm keen too, was hoping it would get restarted one day. I still read the old threads while going through my cook books

Yes - I was wondering about this too. We could keep to the format of having 2 books a month on a similar vein - I remember a great thread with Made in India and Prassad as the choices.

I also read a blog post recently where someone decided to go through some of their cookbooks and cook a recipe they had never tried before from their old books. I thought this was a good idea as I know I tend to cook a couple of staples from a book and kind of forget about the rest of it once it has been shelved.

If lots of people are low carbing we could do recipes for that??

I love the idea of trying a recipe from an old cookbook you’ve not done before.

Some to get you started

Frazzled I really like 'new flavours of the vietnamese table' by Mai Pham. It has no pictures but the recipes are great. It is apparently very similar to her 'pleasures of the Vietnamese table', no idea if that has pictures.

I second Mai Pham for great Vietnamese. My husband is half Vietnamese and we find her recipes pretty close to his grandmother's cooking. I also used to own Songs of Sapa by Luke Nguyen but I gave it away as didn't like many of the recipes.
Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey covers various countries in SE Asia, and has a Vietnamese section too, which I've used a fair bit. It's a really lovely book. The recipes are pretty labour intensive authentic.

We used to have members suggest books/blogs to cover each month and then take a vote. Should we start making some suggestions, see what everyone has in preparation for February?

For an online option I'd suggest perhaps bbc good food in celebration that it has recently been saved through the power of mn?

I’m in, I used to really enjoy those threads.

I am veggie, have most of the River cottage books, a few Nigella books, various christmassy ones and a jamie oliver book 30 min meals i think.

I also have student/cheap cooking cookbooks and some random party food and canape ones!

I get a veg box weekly, that comes with recipes and there are loads of good recipes for free on the website for there.

Thank you, I will look at the Mai Pham books.
