Which do you use and why?

Which is meant to be better for you / healthier - butter or margarine?

Any particular brands?

Thanks!

butter is better for you.

I use margarine though as I hate all marge and butter except flora.

I do not see the appeal of butter it tastes foul

firesidechat · 07/04/2016 17:57

Butter is better for you. Margarine is vile stuff and I've always used butter.

There has been a huge turn around in advice about fats and very recently there was a cardiac surgeon on radio 4 giving butter and animal fats the seal of approval. He also said that no one would eat margarine if they knew what they were eating.

dementedpixie · 07/04/2016 17:58

Always butter. They are both full of fat but butter tastes nicer. You don't actually get margarine in the uk as far as I know...they are 'spreads' now

Butter. Marg is vile nasty grey stuff(until the artificial colour is added to make it look vaguely palatable).

DessertOrDesert · 07/04/2016 18:07

So, where are all you better people when I go visiting friends??? They product some tub of "taste like butter" tackiness, and wonder why I ask if they have butter.
I still remember offering butter or Marge for a toddler sandwich, being told butter, and the shock when I got a block out. They then asked for flora.......
Frankly, I don't care which is better. Salted butter is the only one which tastes nice. Restricted availability over here. Local or lurpack slightly salted are the options. Give me tesco value as soon as I step foot on UK soil tho.

I buy spread (in Lidl) because I hate when you go to butter the bread and the butter isn't soft enough and it makes holes.

But for cooking/baking/eating other than that it is butter.

weebarra · 07/04/2016 18:18

Butter. President if it's on offer.

firesidechat · 07/04/2016 18:19

You need a better class of friend Dessert.

I agree that slightly salted is the best and we always have President butter. It used to be Lurpak spreadable until I discovered that they added vegetable fats to it.

VertigoNun · 07/04/2016 18:20

I always used butter. I do have stork in the fridge for half marg/half butter in a sponge, as they are lighter textured that way.

anyoldname76 · 07/04/2016 18:22

i like either countrylife or lurpak, if neither are on offer i buy clover.

Cakescakescakes · 07/04/2016 18:25

Mmmmm salty lurpak...

FishOn · 07/04/2016 18:27

butter - marge/spreads are just a load of chemicals

Pipbin · 07/04/2016 18:27

Butter, in fact Brittany butter.
I keep it in a glass butter dish on the side in the kitchen all year round. It's always soft enough to spread.

hugoagogo · 07/04/2016 18:33

We have butter for most things, but have stork for some baking.

Nibbl3s · 07/04/2016 18:37

Dairy free spread is the healthiest, no hormones cholesterole etc.

Pipbin · 07/04/2016 18:42

Look at the ingredients on dairy free spread as compared to butter.

I'm sure this has been done before but.... butter or margarine?

I believed the butter is bad message for years and we had margarine. All those wasted years when we could have been enjoying butter instead Hmm.

My only problem with butter at this time of year is that it won't spread, so I've been using Lurpak spreadable. Not sure if that's good or not but it tastes nice Confused.

gooru · 07/04/2016 18:44

Butter.

Marge is grey chemical slush with added food colouring.

Pipbin · 07/04/2016 18:46

I did too HotPotato. I think we all did.

VulcanWoman · 07/04/2016 18:52

Yeo Valley organic is nice.

VulcanWoman · 07/04/2016 18:53

*spreadable butter

BrendasGotABaby · 07/04/2016 18:54

I use butter for baking, as the taste of Stork is disgusting.

But weirdly I prier the taste of Flora marg on tots/jacket potatoes etc.

I know butter is less processed and I know people are terribly snotty about marg Grin...but I find butter too rich and creamy.

Hassled · 07/04/2016 18:54

Margarine if you still live in the 70s when there was the idea that it was somehow less bad for you. I'm fairly sure it's been agreed that was bollocks and we all ate less nice baked goods for a decade for no reason.
