Which do you use and why?

Which is meant to be better for you / healthier - butter or margarine?

Any particular brands?

Thanks!

Butter is way better than any spread. Just regular block stuff. However, I do use Stork for baking as I get better results and a few years back, butter was significantly more expensive.

At work I keep some M&S spreadable butter in the fridge for bread rolls, jacket potatoes, etc. This is naturally spreadable due to the diet of the cows, rather than having been mixed with oils.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 12/04/2016 13:36

Hmm. so I bought butter - a block of salted - and it just doesn't spread!!!???!!

So I bought Norpak (Aldi equivalent of Lurpak I guess) - spreadable which of course did spread, but does contain some vegetable oils.. ??

I used to buy some sort of olive oil 'spread' so I'm guessing Norpak / Lurpak spreadable is better than this? I do need something that spreads as I use it for sandwiches / toast / bagels / crumpets etc.....

You need a butter dish. Never keep it in the fridge and if all else fails microwave a little bit for a couple of seconds.

Seeyounearertime · 24/04/2016 07:49

Depend what im doing. Baking amd cooking would be butter. To make sandwhiches I get Tescos Butter Me Up.

I didn't realise how bad they say they are. Blush Oh well, I'm an awful person.

Pipbin · 24/04/2016 07:55

It won't spread from the fridge.
Keep it in a butter dish in a cupboard or on the side.

Statelychangers · 24/04/2016 09:59

Butter - hate marg!

DubbyDubDub · 25/04/2016 20:36

Kerrygold salted butter for the win. Every time.

Nothing else tastes as nice on hot toast, on baked spuds etc. etc.

Need to slice of a chunk and keep on the side out of the fridge.

Margarine is manufactured yuk.

So there!!

ghostoftheMNchicken · 25/04/2016 20:47

Norpak also doesn't contain Palm oil, while many of the spreadable ones do.

Love the idea of real butter but cannot be fucking arsed with the spreading of it.

Cosmic47 · 27/10/2022 09:37

What, butter is foul ?! Don't know which butter you're using, but most butter is delicious.... It's margarine which taste foul 🤮

KangarooKenny · 27/10/2022 09:38

Butter. But I do put flora on sandwiches for some reason.

KangarooKenny · 27/10/2022 09:40

I currently buy spreadable butter, but I’m considering buying a butter dish to put in the kitchen, and keeping block butter instead. I just seems wrong to keep it in a kitchen that gets hot sometimes 🤷🏼‍♀️

Twillow · 27/10/2022 09:46

If margarine is all there is, even Flora, I'd go without on bread. Has to be real butter for bread, even supermarket spreadable butters will do, but not any kind of margarine - nasty oily taste.
Baking, not bothered.

This is fascinating, never heard about it before! Just had a google and apparently, it's to do with a rapeseed-rich diet.

Longley Farm slightly salted butter is divine - really dense like French butter. I love it.

We keep spread in the fridge for the 1 family weirdo who prefers it.

What a bizarre zombie thread to resurrect!

kateandme · 27/10/2022 10:22

Possible due to cost and availability and ingredient changes.

paintitallover · 27/10/2022 11:03

We have butter as opposed to margarine/ spread, but very little. The latest research on diet (Tim Spector et at) says that dairy is good for you, but that butter is not.

Stormchaser1502 · 27/10/2022 13:46

Butter always. Margarine is just a tub full of chemicals.

for those that say they have difficulty spreading butter this time of year..I grate it! Works every time!

I rub a tea strainer on it and it does the same thing.
