Butter, unsalted, I keep it in a dish on the bench.
I buy spready salted butter for dd as that's what she prefers, margarine is rank.

Mainly butter but dairy free spread for baking as it blends more easily and I'm often baking for someone with cow's milk allergy. Spreadability is a problem though, I keep it on the side and from September to May it's too hard, then you get a hot spell and it melts.

I only use proper butter for cooking. I like an olive spread for bread/scones/jacket potatoes, as proper butter is a pain to spread.

Butter. Sainsburys own: 65p. There are nicer ones but I'm tight.

I keep it in a glass butter dish and it's always spreadable.

All butter that's labelled 'Spreadable' contains vegetable oil. And doesn't taste of butter.

Butter here too - and to spread I just keep a small chunk of butter in a little dish on the worksurface, so that it stays soft - just a square inch or two's enough.

Pipbin surely the quantity of ingredients is less relevant than the quality and affect they have on the body? For example cows milk is to feed a baby cow, not an adult human being.

Butter is totally natural. It doesn't have to contain preservatives or colour.

This is very true Nibbles that cow milk is for calves. However most humans have evolved to be able to be able to process cows milk. It happened in human history around the same time as we started to farm I believe. It was the major part of what allowed humans to stop living a nomadic, hunter gatherer lifestyle and to start to settle in communities. Humans also lost the ability to digest raw meat at the same time. We had the time to cook it and allow the fire to start the digestion process.

I say most humans have evolved this ability, some parts of the world did not. 2/3 of Chinese people are lactose intolerant for example. And of course some people are just born that way regardless of racial background.

Assuming that you are not lactose intolerant then there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to consume milk.

Salted kerrygold here, left out on the counter in a butter dish, always spreads perfectly. Tastes so much better than spreads, nice to cook with. Perfect!

Pipbin Those Chinese women who don't eat diary and don't eat a western style diet have the lowest incidence of breast cancer in the world I believe. Consultants advise women with oestrogen dependant cancers to avoid dairy because of the growth hormones that naturally occur in dairy. Very high.
Dairy and its huge range of potential health problems is widely known but the marketing of dairy is very big and of course a whole industry would fall overnight if everyone stopped eating it.

I don't see the appeal of margarine or "spreads", they taste foul.

It isn't really. If you buy supermarket own brand or value butter it still tastes better than marge. I use Stork margarine with butter for baking and always get excellent results. For toast and bread we use spreadable butter as butter straight from the fridge is too hard and our warm, south facing kitchen turns butter rancid too quickly.

Margarine is an abomination. Butter is one of the most delicious substances known to man.

Kerrygold for choice because Irish dairy really is a cut above.
