Less the death but more the aftermath of Hilda crying about Stan in Corrie. Ditto Bet crying about Alec.

I don't watch any soaps now, but Jean Alexander playing the grieving Hilda was an underrated masterclass in acting. She was wonderful.

Captain Vain from Black Sails

I'm still angry at the Black Sails writers for killing off Miranda Barlow.

Continuing the nautical theme, young Acting Lieutenant Calamy in Master and Commander.

And, even though I knew the story of the real Franklin Expedition, all the characters who die in episode 9 of 'The Terror' but especially Tom Hartnell. Captain Crozier telling him how well he had done and that he could go be with his brother now broke my heart.

I haven’t RTFT because I’m scared of spoilers.
Mine contains spoilers for Throne of Glass, Handmaid’s Tale and Downton Abbey.

Throne of Glass - The Thirteen. I sobbed and sobbed like I have never before at the death of a fictional character. I was thoroughly heartbroken.

Handmaid’s Tale - I cried when Commander Lawrence saluted June before getting on the plane. Yes he was responsible for Gilead but he had tried to redeem himself. It made me so sad.

Downton Abbey - Sybil Crawley. Enough said.

And further continuing the nautical theme, though I doubt anyone will have read the stories, the death of Lieutenant Bush in the Hornblower series

I've read them. I knew what happened to Bush because Nicola Marlow didn't want to re-read it. And while on the Marlows, what about the death of Jon Marlow?

MyAmpleSheep · 06/12/2025 02:33

Has anyone mentioned Min Harper yet?

All of them from It's a Sin. Cried for pretty much the entire show.

It was really well done with the death of Olly Alexander’s character - the viewer was cheated out of the opportunity to say goodbye to him, as well as his friends in the show.

RainBow725 · 06/12/2025 05:25

Definitely found my people here. Yes to:

Lucy, Mark and Gant in ER
Will in The Good Wife
Matthew in Downtown (made me so cross, I stopped watching after this!)
Mrs Landingham, Leo & especially Simon in The West Wing 😭.

All of which I rewatch regularly and have to skip some episodes!

Also Danny Kendall in Grange Hill (showing my age) 😂

YES!

Barbara Hershey’s character in Beaches and Combo in This Is England. He was so hopeful and happy with his fresh start.

Anne Gilbert’s first baby-her “wee white Joy”……

Oh yes @CurlewKate this, cried buckets over that. It's this bit "At sunset the little soul that had come with the dawning went away, leaving heartbreak behind it."
And remembered another one for the list, Teddy from Kate Atkinson's "A God in Ruins". I'm not a weeper in public but a book can really set me off in private 🙄
