Marley's in Marley and me

See also Walter Blythe in Rilla of Ingleside.

Walter was always doomed though, wasn't he. I mean he wrote poetry!

One of Anne's sons had to die, and he was the obvious one.

The rabbits in Watership Down that didn’t make it

Not sure how we got this far through the thread without a mention of Watership Down. If I just hear a couple of bars of “Bright Eyes” I am in floods!

battenburgbaby · 14/11/2025 22:34

Gwyneth Paltrow’s character in Se7en

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!?!

Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones Mad about the boy, I remember reading the book on a sun bed in Mexico crying ugly snotty tears into my towel whilst my husband promised the pool staff I was ok - spoiler alert I was not ok!
Other than that Will in Me Before you

I think my name says my answer!

But also Boxer in Animal Farm. A kid once patted me on the arm kindly after I welled up reading it. See also Lennie in Of Mice and Men.

Gosh yes, I agree about Piggy. And it’s so beautifully written. Something about the fall through the air of a boy called Piggy (probably very poorly remembered!)

Edited to add the actual quote: The narrator states that Ralph wept "for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy".

Piggywaspushed · 14/11/2025 22:48

The fall through the air of the true wise friend called Piggy. Sob.

I blame the piper.

Johnny and Dallas in The Outsiders. I knew nothing about it when I saw it first in the cinema and I was devastated. I read the book as soon as I could after that and sobbed over that as well.
Katherine in The English Patient.
Walter and Matthew in the Anne books and Lenny in Of Mice and Men.
The daughter in Once Were Warriors.

Nighteyes. Glad he's been read and remembered by so many.

Wash. I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar.

I was going to say Warrick Brown, but I was beaten to it. Now I'm a parent, rewatching CSI the child deaths hits way harder.

I'm also going to say Finnick Odair. Why?! Just.... Why?!

GenerousGardener · 14/11/2025 23:52

Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire.

If we’re adding animals, Sailor in Riders. Christ that broke my heart, so realistically written and I loved him so much (didn’t we all??). I’ve lost many horses over the years and the depth of feeling from Jake was so familiar.

Tryingatleast · 15/11/2025 09:48

Beedeeoh

Ginger in Black Beauty, Hedgehogs in Animals of Farthing Wood, Boxer in Animal Farm.

Ginger KILLED me! If you’re talking about the movie not the book (I can’t remember it in the book), I sometimes watch just for a good cathartic sob! And those poor hedgehogs- I think all of farthing wood was designed to make you cry tbh

2GreatFatSquirrels · 15/11/2025 09:51

I’m over all the deaths. It’s the little things that stick with me - like the woman in Devil All The Time being humiliated over her chicken liver dish. God knows why that’s what I flash back to in a film about serial killers.

Hamnet

Oh yes, that book was heartbreaking, especially as my son was about the same age as Hamnet when I was reading it.

3flyingducksarrive · 15/11/2025 10:17

The chess game in Pawn in Frankincense. Devastating.

Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire.

Oh yes, what a great character
