Honestly epic. Deep, thrilling, astonishingly beautiful to look at …

Directed by Ryan Coogler. Something made me want to see this immediately - and I’m glad I did yesterday, before I’d read too many previews. I wouldn’t know where to start in describing it - just want to urge everyone to go and watch it, preferably on an imax screen or something big, with good sound. Don’t to more than glance at this review:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/apr/10/sinners-review-ryan-cooglers-deep-south-gonzo-horror-down-at-the-crossroads

I should say, though, that Wunmi Mosaku, who I last saw doing unglamorous plod work on Vera, looks like an Oscar contender in this.

Sinners review – Ryan Coogler’s deep-south gonzo horror down at the crossroads

Michael B Jordan plays a double role in Coogler’s intriguing period tale of anti-heroic brothers making their way into much wilder country

Great read, thanks for sharing. I’ve got a day to myself tomorrow and will be spending part of it with Annie, Sammy and the gang!

LadyKenya · 20/12/2025 12:22

Thanks for that OP. Sinners was, for me, definitely the best film I have seen this Year, followed by The Long Walk.

MayIDestroyYou · 20/12/2025 13:13

Have you seen ‘One Battle’? It’s almost impossible to believe there could be a film I might, might have enjoyed more than Sinners. I don’t know - maybe I just found it left stressful, while still being full of thrill and visual ambition.

sinners for me - My favourite film this year and i go to cinema once a week

MayIDestroyYou · 20/12/2025 13:30

The threat of carrying various viruses to my nonagenarian relatives over the holiday season has temporarily paused my new commitment to proper cinema. Thankfully my flu vaccine will have kicked in soon - so I’m building up tickets for the NY.

Edited

I saw a double bill of them at the IMAX last weekend (OBAA first, Sinners second) and whilst I can see why some would say OBAA is the better film on paper, Sinners is still my favourite of the year. It's a tough call though.

My head loved both, but my heart loves Sinners ☺️

MayIDestroyYou · 20/12/2025 14:06

Absolutely that, @SocksAndTheCity.

I want Sinners to win all the prizes - but Johnny Greenwood’s score, and the ‘roads’ scenes in Battle were utterly outstanding.

Sinners was the more revelatory film - like nothing I’ve seen before, and a level of visual poetry that raises the standard quite staggeringly; but sitting in the Battle auditorium - I just didn’t want it to end.

The relief! I’m so delighted for her, and for everyone involved in making this film.

16 Oscar nominations! I hope it wins the lot.

Daytimetellyqueen · 31/01/2026 09:59

I watched it last night - thought it was ok but not amazing. Feel like I’ve missed the point / some deeper meaning has gone right over my head?!! No idea why so many Oscar nominations!

BrunchBarBandit · 31/01/2026 10:09

We watched it last night. Tremendous. And so visually beautiful. Some of the still scenes were breath-taking. And the music! The music lifts you right up out of your seat. Magic.

I love a vampire / lore tale anyway and this was such a treat, with the historical, racial and cultural context.

MayIDestroyYou · 31/01/2026 10:22

There’s no accounting for tastes, @Daytimetellyqueen! I was puzzled by Marty Supreme …

pointythings · 31/01/2026 10:47

I think if you see it and all you see is a vampire movie, you've missed the point completely.

MayIDestroyYou · 31/01/2026 12:19

@Daytimetellyqueen I’m not trying to change your mind at all, but if you only read the reviews and articles linked on this thread you might find you gain some insight into the film? (Although - a whole lifetime of reading wouldn’t endear Hamnet to me, so … 🤷‍♀️)

Thanks @MayIDestroyYou - I feel like I need to watch it again!

Hoppinggreen
It got 3 out 5?
What a suprise; a strong black central characters film directed by a black director and bloody fantastic to look at with a brilliant storyline which resonates even today
Not suprised it got 3 we really do have to try harder don't we?
It really deserves the full 5 and then some
Go watch it
If you've only read reviews by another demograph,
What did you honestly expect??

GreyBeeplus3 · 08/02/2026 15:42

Awardandpeace
It's not that "scary" I found/felt that what so-called scaring there was is totally relevant to the story and not gratuitous

GreyBeeplus3 · 08/02/2026 15:49

Wunmi Mosaku
Is also in a series called "Passengers" on itvx she was showing brilliance and how far she'd go even then

What does 'Marty Supreme' have to do with anything when the main topic here is 'Sinners?'
I mean, are they both different versions of the same genre/story??
I somehow doubt it
Or do you believe that a black film directed, brilliantly made and received
Cannot be really that good??

SocksAndTheCity · 08/02/2026 16:55

Some of the posts you're responding to are almost ten months old, @GreyBeeplus3 .

If you're not going to quote them or put an '@' in front of the posters name so they get a notification, they likely won't know you're replying.

WTF are you talking about? I didn’t mention Marty Supreme??!! I have also said I feel I need to watch it again as I haven’t properly appreciated the film - I thought it was good but not amazing as others have said, & since reading the articles that were linked here made me realise that I need to watch it again, with a better appreciation.

No you didn’t mention Marty Supreme. Our OP @MayIDestroyYou did, as a comparison for films that appeal to different people.

I’ve not seen MS (and have no interest in it, from the trailers I’ve seen) but I adore Sinners.
