Honestly epic. Deep, thrilling, astonishingly beautiful to look at …

Directed by Ryan Coogler. Something made me want to see this immediately - and I’m glad I did yesterday, before I’d read too many previews. I wouldn’t know where to start in describing it - just want to urge everyone to go and watch it, preferably on an imax screen or something big, with good sound. Don’t to more than glance at this review:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/apr/10/sinners-review-ryan-cooglers-deep-south-gonzo-horror-down-at-the-crossroads

I should say, though, that Wunmi Mosaku, who I last saw doing unglamorous plod work on Vera, looks like an Oscar contender in this.

Sinners review – Ryan Coogler’s deep-south gonzo horror down at the crossroads

Michael B Jordan plays a double role in Coogler’s intriguing period tale of anti-heroic brothers making their way into much wilder country

Deliberately avoided this thread until I’d seen it. And I loved it!! I really wish I’d seen it in the cinema.

I'm not great with horror but this felt as if the horror parts were important. The music was incredible and I loved how the lead actor played two parts so well.

Hope it wins everything

👍

Have you seen One Battle? It’s essential, and very satisfying, to be able to compare their respective merits.

If you have, go see the new Hamlet ‘adaptation’ with Riz Ahmed. Smaller scale, but rather enthralling. And beautiful to look at.

I’m interested to see how many people loved this film. I enjoyed the central performances and the sound is outstanding, but something was lacking for me. Not a patch on One Battle After Another for me. Takes all sorts!

Ds wants to see this but I’m a horror wimp. My natural limit is Get Out which I really liked.

I hate horror too but it’s fine. The scary gore is so ridiculous that you know it’s not real.

Sinners reminded me a lot of From Dusk Till Dawn Dawn.

I did enjoy the film, loved the scene in the barn with the music going through the different ages, enjoyed Michael B Jordan’s performance as the twins and thought Jack OConnell did a great job too.

Didn’t quite understand the sheer volume of Oscar nominations, would give it a solid 7/10.

I watched it last night - thought it was ok but not amazing. Feel like I’ve missed the point / some deeper meaning has gone right over my head?!! No idea why so many Oscar nominations!

Same, music was great and looked good but I felt it was style over substance, it didn’t touch me at all.

I thought of From Dusk til Dawn straight away too. I felt like the ending was a little rushed; the first half moves at a languorous pace but once everything kicks off it's almost like you blink and it's over. Very minor quibbles however, it was so rich with detail and the music, amazing. Wish I'd seen at the cinema.

Late to the party, saw it at the cinema this afternoon. I loathe horror/fantasy/vampire movies. But loved Sinners. The music, the tension, the brilliant Micheal B Jordan. Yes, there is a nod to From Dawn til Dusk, but there is a moral tale at the centre of Sinners, which I think it lacked. Loved the ending.

MayIDestroyYou · 23/02/2026 19:28

Better late than never! And good that you saw it on a big screen.

Was delighted for Wunmi at the BAFTAs and wished the film had got even more than it did!

MayIDestroyYou · 23/02/2026 19:40

Yup.

I’m trying really hard not to become over-invested in the prize fates of gazillionaire Hollywood film stars and creatives. (Whilst still wanting Sinners to win pretty much everything.)

From Dawn Till Dusk was about vampires. Sinners was mostly not about vampires at all.

I’m rooting for One Battle After Another. It edged Sinners, Hamnet and Marty Supreme for me.

JHound · 23/02/2026 20:05

I still have to watch OBAA. Will wait till it’s on streaming.

If you can, see it on the big screen. I promise it’ll be worth it for the car chase!

From Dawn Till Dusk was about vampires. Sinners was mostly not about vampires at all.

I don't understand the comparisons either; both films were about two brothers (but not twins), both had vampires and both had a barroom setting for the main action bit, but apart from that the stories had nothing to do with each other.

Sinners could have been made as a straight film about black oppression and social/cultural history without the vampires. I don't think Dusk Till Dawn would have much left to watch if you took them out.

Beekman · 23/02/2026 23:39

I loved it too, by far the best film of the year for me. OBAA was also very good but Sinners was brilliant. I enjoyed Marty Supreme but it doesn’t hold a candle to either of those two films. Hamnet was not for me.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 24/02/2026 23:18

Sinners all the way

And having seen OBAA, Hamnet and MS, I would actually put I Swear into second place

Yes dh and I said it reminded us of that.

We just watched it on TV. It's on locally at the cinema (probably because of Oscars?) So I may go and see it there too.

samspotato · 16/03/2026 22:38

I loved it. I didn’t know anything about it so the twist was a shock to me. Loved the ending too. The soundtrack, basically all of it.

Was there even more after the bar scene at the end?

I'm late to this film and saw it today as it was brought back by an independent cinema in Melbourne for a post-Oscars whirl. I knew little about it other than my DD saying to watch it.

So glad to have seen it on the big screen and with tip-top sound. Very good indeed. It was strange to see Michael B Jordan who when I last saw him on screen was the skinny street kid in "The Wire" who came to a bad end. Wonderful music, singing and dancing.

Yes, so many people walked out during the credits and missed the several endings.
