Honestly epic. Deep, thrilling, astonishingly beautiful to look at …

Directed by Ryan Coogler. Something made me want to see this immediately - and I’m glad I did yesterday, before I’d read too many previews. I wouldn’t know where to start in describing it - just want to urge everyone to go and watch it, preferably on an imax screen or something big, with good sound. Don’t to more than glance at this review:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/apr/10/sinners-review-ryan-cooglers-deep-south-gonzo-horror-down-at-the-crossroads

I should say, though, that Wunmi Mosaku, who I last saw doing unglamorous plod work on Vera, looks like an Oscar contender in this.

Sinners review – Ryan Coogler’s deep-south gonzo horror down at the crossroads

Michael B Jordan plays a double role in Coogler’s intriguing period tale of anti-heroic brothers making their way into much wilder country

I do want to see it but 3 out of 5 is hardly a great review score

TrelawnyBastian · 19/04/2025 10:28

Tbh I wan’t to watch it so I can stare at Michael B Jordan for a few hours 😂

ClaudiaDark · 19/04/2025 10:30

I really enjoyed it. But I wish I hadn't watched the trailer as it gave away some spoilers.

MayIDestroyYou · 19/04/2025 10:46

You need to go and see it, @Hoppinggreen - you may disagree with the reviewer.

I don’t do horror, at all, and seriously wanted to run away at some points (was in the middle of a row and couldn’t be so impolite to fellow audience members). But there is so much more to it than that.

Go for the visual poetry. And the sound world. And a workaday police procedural actress turned actual Hollywood star. And to laugh pityingly at people who get up and leave the minute the credits start to roll.

I always disagree with reviews to be fair
I have really enjoyed films with bad reviews and hated ones that have been raved about

MayIDestroyYou · 19/04/2025 11:10

Yes, that’s an almost inescapable difficulty, @ClaudiaDark.

My local multiplex offers a membership of £25 a month that includes 7 free tickets per week. I almost laughed when I read it; I usually go to the cinema alone and couldn’t imagine taking myself to seven films every week. But then a poster on another thread mentioned that she only sees films in the cinema and doesn’t subscribe to any streaming services. It made me realise that I easily spend more than that per month on streaming subscriptions - and wouldn’t really lose out if I only went to a handful of films every month.

If I’d waited to watch Sinners on my laptop I’d have lost most of the surprise of seeing it early.

How scary is it? I’m a bit of a wimp.

MayIDestroyYou · 20/04/2025 12:25

Me too, @Awardandpeace! In truth, apart from loads of blood, it’s not actually more scary than Buffy (which I adored). But the level of threat and jeopardy feels much higher; without spoilering, this is adults in a film rather than teens in a TV series.

Astonishingly it only carries a 15 Certificate.

I am watching it tonight.

AprilBunny · 20/04/2025 21:52

I loved it!
The sound is amazing.
Don’t leave when you think it’s ended.

category12 · 20/04/2025 22:51

Saw it tonight. Loved it.

GreenSalon2 · 20/04/2025 22:57

Bit bonkers but I loved it.

I try not to read reviews until after I’ve watched something.

MayIDestroyYou · 20/04/2025 23:25

This is encouraging!

I’ve been reading about how much it cost to make - close to $100 million 😮 (and Mr Coogler himself had to top up the spending as Warner Bros budgeted $80 million.) I screenshot this but forget where from:

For comparison, Jordan Peele made the R-rated "Get Out," an original horror movie set in modern times, for about $4.5 million in 2017. Mr. Peele's similar "Us" cost $20 million in 2019.

And then I gather Nope (another Peele film) cost about $60 million. I loved Nope - and I guess one can see where the money went. Sinners certainly gives the audience an amazing amount to look at. (Even those of us who spend half the film trying not to look because we’re so scared.)

I’m dragging teenage son to this tomorrow to get him a bit of light relief away from A level revision. Glad to hear it’s going to be worthwhile.

To clarify… there’s an extra bit after the credits? Will stay firmly in the seats until the lights come on 👍

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/04/2025 23:43

I thought it was brilliant for all the reasons you say, OP.
Not a typical horror at all.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/04/2025 23:55

@MayIDestroyYou you've convinced me to use my free day to see it, cheers.

MayIDestroyYou · 21/04/2025 00:03

👍

LividRah · 21/04/2025 16:05

I've seen it twice already.

Second time I stayed for the very end credits sequence too.

MayIDestroyYou · 21/04/2025 16:20

Oh, wow!

The very brilliant playwright Katori Hall (who I venerate for the TV series P-Valley) was very enthusiastic about Sinners on instagram - to the extent of saying she’d be going to see it a second time …

(Not that I’m influenced by what I read on instagram … But I’d quite like to enjoy the whole visual effect without being distracted by heart in mouth anticipation of extreme violence towards characters I already love.)

Why did you, @LividRah?

OP posts:
LividRah · 21/04/2025 16:22

I had a bit of childfree time today and it was raining, and I fancied seeing it in IMAX (knowing what was going to happen so I could focus on the detail more).

Worth it I think.

SoScarletItWas · 21/04/2025 16:25

Thanks for this thread @MayIDestroyYou!

One of the best films I’ve ever seen. It’s gorgeous and moving and the MUSIC! I cried at the end. I had to sit in the cinema bar for half an hour to process it. The horror is almost incidental to what a multi-layered experience it is.

I’m going again on Wednesday.

LividRah · 21/04/2025 16:30

@SoScarletItWas the scene with the feeding baby utterly destroyed me because I wasn't expecting it. Was easier second time.

@LividRah me too, because I am an absolute sucker for a love-reunited scene.

And aren’t so many vampire films love stories, when you think about it.

PCDunnow · 21/04/2025 17:58

I loved it, DH loved it and even scowly DS liked it which is testament to its brilliance. However, a young couple got up to leave during the rolling credits and I wanted to shout “sit down! Stay!” but DH was with me and he gets embarrassed at this type of thing.
