Honestly epic. Deep, thrilling, astonishingly beautiful to look at …

Directed by Ryan Coogler. Something made me want to see this immediately - and I’m glad I did yesterday, before I’d read too many previews. I wouldn’t know where to start in describing it - just want to urge everyone to go and watch it, preferably on an imax screen or something big, with good sound. Don’t to more than glance at this review:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/apr/10/sinners-review-ryan-cooglers-deep-south-gonzo-horror-down-at-the-crossroads

I should say, though, that Wunmi Mosaku, who I last saw doing unglamorous plod work on Vera, looks like an Oscar contender in this.

Sinners review – Ryan Coogler’s deep-south gonzo horror down at the crossroads

Michael B Jordan plays a double role in Coogler’s intriguing period tale of anti-heroic brothers making their way into much wilder country

@LividRah me too, because I am an absolute sucker for a love-reunited scene.

And aren’t so many vampire films love stories, when you think about it.

Twilight!

PCDunnow · 21/04/2025 18:00

DH is reading this on his phone 😳

<waves> 👋

EasternStandard · 21/04/2025 18:30

Ds wants to see this but I’m a horror wimp. My natural limit is Get Out which I really liked.

NoviceVillager · 21/04/2025 18:38

TrelawnyBastian · 19/04/2025 10:28

Tbh I wan’t to watch it so I can stare at Michael B Jordan for a few hours 😂

Same! He’s a brilliant actor as well.

SoScarletItWas · 21/04/2025 18:42

@EasternStandard there’s plenty of tension, a couple of jump scares, and the obvious vampire-biting and heart-staking, but it’s not that scary.

MayIDestroyYou · 21/04/2025 19:03

@EasternStandard - I’m generally fine with vampires, and think they make good screen entertainment as long as the rest of the world is bright and sparkly - like Buffy. Not so keen when the whole world is inescapable misery. Cannot do Zombies - a couple of episodes of ‘The Last of Us’ were enough to upset me for months. And I desperately want to see Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ - but there’s no way I’m watching it alone at home.

Sinners for me was more about the inevitable sadness

Just back and I loved it too (and virtually none of the references on the thread mean anything to me, likely because I don't really watch TV).

I went to my local, but I'll be heading for the IMAX to see it again in the week. Thankfully I already knew to stay until the end 😀

idrinkandiknowthings · 24/04/2025 13:58

Went with my 18 year old to see it on Saturday and we both loved it. A slow-burn but utterly absorbing and the cinematography was fabulous.

Awardandpeace · 24/04/2025 20:26

I went to watch it today with my daughter on all your recommendations and we thought it was brilliant. We both loved it.

PCDunnow · 25/04/2025 14:24

And did you all stay for the extra bit? And apparently there’s an extra extra bit too.

MayIDestroyYou · 25/04/2025 14:32

Everyone in my auditorium who stayed for the epilogue stayed for the postscript too. I did feel sorry for the people who rushed out the minute the credits began!

This slightly states the obvious, but l’ll leave it here in case anyone finds it illuminating:

I think the three star review posted earlier must have been generous. I really thought this was quite boring and took way too long to get into.

Epli · 14/05/2025 19:40

I loveeeed it sooo much! I was going expecting to find it overhyped, but it exceeded my expectations. The way music is used to tell the story was very interesting and very novel. I was also very impressed by Wunmi Mosaku, but the acting is generally very strong and the characters are very well written.

MayIDestroyYou · 14/05/2025 20:26

Only just seen your comment, @Britpopbaby! I’m wondering what you’ve been watching that could be more exciting than this? I was hooked from the moment I saw a person getting out of a car that clearly wasn’t theirs! (Trying not to spoil too much.) I did feel a moment of frustration when the story ‘switched’ - but I guess they had to get there somehow.

I agree the music was powerful, @Epli- but for me it was all about the vast scale and exquisite detail of the visual element. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen cotton fields shown like that before.

You need to go and see it, @Hoppinggreen - you may disagree with the reviewer.

I don’t do horror, at all, and seriously wanted to run away at some points (was in the middle of a row and couldn’t be so impolite to fellow audience members). But there is so much more to it than that.

Go for the visual poetry. And the sound world. And a workaday police procedural actress turned actual Hollywood star. And to laugh pityingly at people who get up and leave the minute the credits start to roll.

I noted this too! Please do stay until the very end of the credits.😊 I agree with The Guardian article. Visually and as a music fan the movie is beautiful. The script however could do with a little more work. The lack of character development and over-use of artistic licence is why this is a 3/5 for me. Overall a great movie. Enjoy

Oh yeah I agree cotton fields were done beautifully, the cut from Annie's hut to other brother travelling in car through field was awesome. I also loved the way the little church was filmed (I don't know why, but it was a bit eerie) or the scene in which camera followed Lisa Chow when she crosses the street to go & fetch her mother.

pointythings · 18/05/2025 16:29

We saw it yesterday, absolutely blown away. It works on so many levels and I will never listen to Rocky Road to Dublin in quite the same way again. The idea of using music to convey menace has never been done so well.

maximalistmaximus · 18/05/2025 16:47

I went to see it.

I had never heard of it or Michael Jordan. I did t even know it was a horror.

it felt like a film of 2 halves. I thought they were 2 actors!

I did t really like the spoiler at the start.

but yes you have to watch the bit after the credits.

Nitgel · 26/05/2025 17:55

Loved this. A perfect film.

sadmillenial · 28/05/2025 06:24

i thought there was a really subversive take on the seductive vampire lore.... when they tempted them with a "brotherhood of man" and a life without racism... LOVED this film, so layered and so tactile

MayIDestroyYou · 28/05/2025 08:22

Yes …

The strategic utilisation of charm is one of the things that usually draws me to vampires on screen, even if I don’t like the rest of the show (A Discovery of Witches being a case in point).

But here it was all just too sad.

(I think that’s why if I were to watch it again I’d rather it was at home. So I can properly cry for the loss, and love, and sadness, without the distraction of suspense and mild terror.)
