It's one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I've not seen the stage show.

All the characters are horrible & one dimensional. Even the green one - she's the most likeable & developed character & they still managed to make her flat & boring.

They threw all the CGI possible at it and it left me feeling very empty. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Glinda is awful. Absolutely awful but we are meant to like her cause of all the rich blond & pink. Dreadful.

The costumes were fabulous though gotta hand them that. Probably an Oscar for costumes.

I feel empty & sad after seeing that film.

My daughters loved it. They now think I'm the worst.

Just come back from seeing it so here's my tuppence worth!

I don't get how Glinda knows the wizard is just a man but then in the 'future' tells Dorothy to go to visit as he is do wonders/ magical!!

Hated the stage show years ago

Thought all the CGI and actors were great especially Ariana and Jonathan Bailey - great fun

But it was really too long!

Gladiator was better!

We found the applause a bit cringe if I'm honest 😬

I think it's completely weird when people clap in the cinema

It's not like the actors are there to see it!!

RosemaryAvocado · 23/11/2024 00:30

Love LOVE Strike OP. Also love Wicked (stage and film) 🤗
We can’t all like everything though, the world would be boring otherwise… 🙂

LadyGAgain · 23/11/2024 00:30

The fact you want to put Les Mis in the bin OP is a crime against musical theatre!! So I don't think we would align.
I loved the stage show of wicked and tomorrow am taking the family to see the film. We are all genuinely excited!

FrothyCothy · 23/11/2024 00:31

Oh good, I’m not alone in my dislike of Wicked at the theatre. But then I didn’t like the recent production of the wizard of oz either 😁 kids are very into their musicals but when offered the chance to go see wicked for a second time both said no, and showing no interest in seeing the film either! How they’re got two feature length movies out of the stage show, I’ve no idea.

But I do love belting Defying Gravity in the car/shower.

purpleme12 · 23/11/2024 00:33

I thought Wicked was a bit underwhelming at the theatre if I'm honest

And like someone else said, Defying Gravity is about the only good song

I'm hoping the film will be better.
But I didn't realise till this thread that this is only part 1!!!

CatamaranViper · 23/11/2024 00:34

The film was fantastic. I've seen the stage show several times (first time with Kerry Ellis, who I am in love with). I was also obsessed with the Idina Menzel/Kristin Chenoweth soundtrack, and then Wicked in Rock with Brian May and Kerry Ellis (FULLY recommend this for everyone else btw!)

I was really worried that the film would be shite and pointless. It absolutely was not. I wouldn't change a thing. In fact I would have sat there and watched the second half straight after if I could.
AG was so much better than I could have hoped for, I knew nothing of CE and wow, and I was sceptical about JB but I was very wrong.

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/11/2024 00:43

Fs just because YOU didn't like it doesn't mean u have to ruin it for everyone else. Why did u go and see it ?

The thread title was a massive clue about what this thread was about.

OP posts:
RobinEllacotStrike · 23/11/2024 00:46

I think we get your point that you didn't like it. No need to be spiteful and post spoilers to ruin it for others 🙄

Clearly this is a thread to discuss the film Wicked. If you don't want your read a discussion about the film Wicked this is the wrong thread for you.

If you don't know there is a green woman in it after you've seen the film, I can't help you.

😂

I absolutely loved it, just been to see it tonight and will definitely go again for a second dose. But I also adore Les Mis so I think you and I must just be very different people 😄

MermaidMummy06 · 23/11/2024 00:47

It's about stereotypes, class elitism, friendship crossing boundaries once prejudices are broken, being oppressed for being different, rising up to realise they do have the power to be free.

Perhaps read the book.

Snugglemonkey · 23/11/2024 00:48

JumpingPumpkin · 22/11/2024 23:13

Went to see point break tonight instead of Wicked. Sounds like a better choice.

The original Point Break? I so loved that film!

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/11/2024 00:50

I do like some musicals - I know every beat & lyric of Hamilton. I love frozen, Moana, Bruno.

Cats, Les mis, wicked - no thank you.

But I am glad that fans are enjoying it!

I'll pass on the book.

It's a children's film, I've seen many and dozed during a few. But I'm the wrong generation to judge.

gillefc82 · 23/11/2024 01:06

@Beentheretoolong yes I know this covers events in Oz before the arrival of Dorothy, but obviously is set in the same ‘universe’ so I think it’s inevitable to reflect on that film, especially as it is such a classic. I mentioned Margaret Hamilton who played the WWotW in that film and does such a brilliant job, I don’t know how any other actress will compare.

What is it about “releasing only half” ???

🤌💲

Gemstonebeach · 23/11/2024 04:05

Haven’t seen the film yet but loved the show. Unsure why it needs to be two movies??

See my post above. 💲💲. People will pay for two tickets not one. More money more profit.

Saw the film tonight with my daughter who is a MT graduate. We thought Ariane Grande was brilliant as Glinda but did not rate Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. I thought she put unnecessary riffs and trills in places in songs where there's not meant to be - just to show off. Ariane has amazing comic timing and really brought something different to the Glinda character. I liked the film but was a bit underwhelmed - and was irritated by Cynthia Erivo portrayal of Elphaba.

I thought the stage show was terrible- and being a fan of musicals I was so looking forward to it - I am going to see the film and hope i will like it better. I was very underwhelmed and I think it was because I had heard everyone say how amazing it was.

Agree. We took the children many years ago, they adored it, DH and I were left cold. I've never understood the love for it.

I have a musical theatre kid DD and she is so excited about going to see it.

MiddleParking · 23/11/2024 06:45

I’m torn between wanting to go for Jonathan Bailey and wanting to not go because of Ariana Grande’s uncanny valley thing and the incredibly weird PR she and CE have been doing.

MiddleParking · 23/11/2024 06:47

The book is mental. Very adult, quite inaccessible I’d say. You would never associate it with all the pink primark Stanley cup dupes.

The projectionist, cinema staff and possibly the programmers are, though? Admittedly I've only really seen it happen at film festivals and special events.

I've never seen the Wicked stage show and know virtually nothing about it, so I'm looking forward to seeing the film on Monday. I may even have popcorn 😊

supersop60 · 23/11/2024 07:14

Dollybantree · 22/11/2024 23:36

The stage show is terrible too. I've seen it on the West End (spur of the moment on a trip to London) and in Manchester (took dd as she was dying to see it). Hated it both times!

What didn't you like? Genuine question.
