It's one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I've not seen the stage show.

All the characters are horrible & one dimensional. Even the green one - she's the most likeable & developed character & they still managed to make her flat & boring.

They threw all the CGI possible at it and it left me feeling very empty. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Glinda is awful. Absolutely awful but we are meant to like her cause of all the rich blond & pink. Dreadful.

The costumes were fabulous though gotta hand them that. Probably an Oscar for costumes.

I feel empty & sad after seeing that film.

My daughters loved it. They now think I'm the worst.

Booked to see the stage show next month in Manchester and looking forward to it but to be honest have no real interest in going to watch the film. I think it’s a mix of some of the “drama” involving the cast and the fact that The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite films since I was a young girl and I just don’t believe anyone will be able to hold a candle to Judy Garland, Margaret Hamilton etc.

ChoccyJules · 22/11/2024 23:28

@WateryBottle Only the 2nd best musical you say? I beg to differ but do tell me your 1st choice!
To get back to the OP, I found the stage musical good but not amazing and I detested Glinda. Not sure I will see the film, at least not until it comes to the telly.

I went with my daughter tonight and we didn't love it either. Can I ask if there was clapping and cheering at the end? As there was at ours Confused

GreenGherkin · 22/11/2024 23:30

It’s based off the first act of the stage show, movie 2 will be the second half. It would probably be a lot more enjoyable if you’d seen the musical. Lion cub…. Oz…. Hmmmmm 🤐 I can’t wait to see it!

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 22/11/2024 23:32

RobinEllacotStrike · 22/11/2024 23:25

Who / what are we meant to be interested in? What characters are we meant to care about? Apart from the goat. 🐐

Too much editing would water down the story apparently, and they didn't want the fans to miss out Hmm Part 2 released in November 2025, yeah, I've lost interest by then, sorry

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 22/11/2024 23:34

Meant to quote @pizzaHeart not sure what happened there 🤷🏻‍♀️

nextwed14 · 22/11/2024 23:34

I thought the stage show was terrible- and being a fan of musicals I was so looking forward to it - I am going to see the film and hope i will like it better. I was very underwhelmed and I think it was because I had heard everyone say how amazing it was.

Oh my gosh we went to see it tonight and all absolutely LOVED it!!! 10/10!!!!
I loved the show too!!

Same here. I thought it was amazing too. I am so glad that my dd persuaded me to go. It was packed out at the cinema. I can’t remember the last time it was heaving like that. The main characters and the rest of the cast was outstanding in my opinion.
The sets were stunning and the costumes were well made and some were stunning.

l suppose the only thing that is a pain, is that l didn’t realise, that it was part 1 and part 2 is on next year! As they say, good things come to those that wait!

Dollybantree · 22/11/2024 23:36

The stage show is terrible too. I've seen it on the West End (spur of the moment on a trip to London) and in Manchester (took dd as she was dying to see it). Hated it both times!

fallingleavesandhairyknees · 22/11/2024 23:37

There was applause at the end of the showing I sent to tonight.

O6bftdff · 22/11/2024 23:37

I hated the stage show. Always thought it hugely overrated (along with Phantom of the Opera and Book of Mormon).

InWithThePlums · 22/11/2024 23:37

I don’t mind dislikable characters but I’m too freaked out by Ariana Grande (in general) and her blonde hair (in particular) to go and see this.

skippy67 · 22/11/2024 23:38

The stage show is shit IMO, so won't be bothering with the film.

InWithThePlums · 22/11/2024 23:38

Mixed reviews then!

I was expecting an audience reaction- clapping & cheering. There was just silence- the packed cinema just got up, put their coats on & quietly left.

I nearly cried with relief it was over.

Dd1 (17) cried 4 times though I'm not sure when.

Seeing it tomorrow, can’t wait! OP not sure what you mean by throwing all the CGI at it - there’s loads of behind the scenes videos on YouTube showing the extent to which very intricate sets were built and stunts completed, including Cynthia Erivo recording ‘Defying Gravity’ live on set while doing a loop the loop in a harness!! Sure there’s a sprinkling of CGI but a surprising amount has been achieved without 🙂

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/11/2024 23:41

Just got home and I loved it. I am shit at films, anything over an hour and 20 I fall asleep. Didn't check the time once. Kids loved it. Husband loved it and I thought he would have hated it.

RobinEllacotStrike · 22/11/2024 23:43

"Sprinkling of CGI" 😂😂

Wait until tomorrow.

I've not watched anything about the making of it.

I can hear DD singing in her room. Bless.

The library set was amazing.

It was mostly the plot & characterisation and lack of character development that bored me to bits. Poorly written.

I saw it tonight and enjoyed it more than I expected. I'm not a big fan of musicals but loved some of the songs. The characters were a good mix of different kinds of evil. Way too long though!

Edited to add: DH and I smirked at eachother every time one of the characters mentioned Winkie Country.

Do you know the story? There’s no Dorothy in Wicked so no competition for Judy Garland!
