It's one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I've not seen the stage show.

All the characters are horrible & one dimensional. Even the green one - she's the most likeable & developed character & they still managed to make her flat & boring.

They threw all the CGI possible at it and it left me feeling very empty. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Glinda is awful. Absolutely awful but we are meant to like her cause of all the rich blond & pink. Dreadful.

The costumes were fabulous though gotta hand them that. Probably an Oscar for costumes.

I feel empty & sad after seeing that film.

My daughters loved it. They now think I'm the worst.

Applause and cheering here too.

FarFarWay · 22/11/2024 23:52

I think the Elphaba actress was Holly Gibney in a weird series - "The Outsider" - a few years ago. I can see, based on that, how she would be a good choice for a Witch/mystical character. But I do still have her in my mind as Holly (who more or less solved the case cingle-handedly, while most men around her were getting shot).

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 22/11/2024 23:53

We found the applause a bit cringe if I'm honest 😬

I’ve just got back and thought it was great! I am a fan of the stage show and was lucky enough to see Idina Menzel twice. I loved Ariana Grande, she is perfect as G(a)linda. I was slightly underwhelmed by Cynthia Erivo, I felt The Wizard and I didn’t quite hit the mark but I loved the Wizard of Oz styling and overall really enjoyed it, despite being a bit skeptical beforehand.

pizzaHeart · 22/11/2024 23:55

Part 2 in November 2025!!!!
Of course you didn’t like it @RobinEllacotStrike it’s like going out half dressed.
Im not going to see it then, at least not until I can see both parts together.
I really liked the musical and highly recommend it. They have some educational resources on the website, very useful if you go to see it with children.

InWithThePlums · 22/11/2024 23:57

How long was the musical that it would need to be split in two for the film? Or was it more a film of the book?

Booked to see the stage show next month in Manchester and looking forward to it but to be honest have no real interest in going to watch the film. I think it’s a mix of some of the “drama” involving the cast and the fact that The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite films since I was a young girl and I just don’t believe anyone will be able to hold a candle to Judy Garland, Margaret Hamilton etc.

Oh you’ll love it! And you’ll probably love the film, lovely nods to the Wixard of Oz in the styling, credits etc.

They’ve padded out some of the thinner scenes from the musical with elements from the book. It follows the same plot though. I think two films is a bit much though!

Do you know the story? There’s no Dorothy in Wicked so no competition for Judy Garland!

Put all thoughts of Judy Garland and Margaret Hamilton out of your mind. Wicked is very far removed from The Wizard of Oz and I think that's why so many people are so very disappointed in it! If you go just thinking "it's a night out with a bit of music and singing" then hopefully you wont be too underwhelmed.

I recently saw "Burlesque" in Manchester which was pretty awful but I enjoyed that more than Wicked bc it was a at least authentic in its cheesiness and terribleness! wicked is trying to convey a message, be worthy and self-righteous but just comes across as very contrived yet...BAD...in my opinion. I just felt like WTF is going on and I hated all of the characters. It's very marmite I think. Although saying that I don't know anyone in RL that liked it.

I hope my grandchildren like it they've the dolls coming in their Christmas stocking

CadoAvo · 23/11/2024 00:02

I watched it this afternoon and thought it was brilliant although a little too long for my nauseated pregnant self.

I've not seen the stage show but I'm a fan of Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and she was outstanding!! Would watch it again just for her ❤️

There was also a round of applause at the showing I attended.

DevilledEgg · 23/11/2024 00:02

I'm not reading anything you are saying because I haven't seen it yet but I'm commenting so I can come back tomorrow night and discuss 😁

TheChosenTwo · 23/11/2024 00:06

It’s the only stage through we left at the interval, absolute dross! If someone took me to the cinema to see it I’d cry and just walk out at the beginning 😂😂

Yes! This is how I felt too.

There was an awful lot of earnest trying, but the message didn't land for me.

I will be tossing my hair tomorrow though so there is that. 😂

I thought the stage show was really boring and I love a west end musical. Apart from Popular and the end of Defying Gravity it just doesn't have any other memorable songs. Also the story doesn't really make any sense in the end, with the timing of Wizard of Oz. Its almost like it takes itself a little too seriously.

However what has really put me off seeing the film is that it is in 2 parts.

boxoftoads · 23/11/2024 00:13

I left the show at the interval. It was awful.
The film looks dreadful and the marketing hype around it needs to go away quickly.

Fs just because YOU didn't like it doesn't mean u have to ruin it for everyone else. Why did u go and see it ?

😂Thank you, I needed a chuckle Flowers

Felt the same way about the stage show. Saw it in New York, and was really excited about seeing it as friends had seen it and thought it was great. I was just a bit underwhelmed by it.

I think we get your point that you didn't like it. No need to be spiteful and post spoilers to ruin it for others 🙄
