Horror movies with a malevolent/brooding atmosphere?

Hi all!

Looking for recommendations for horror/spooky movies with a brooding/creepy atmosphere rather than gorey stuff. I like the 1970s 'Salem's Lot' adaptation and 'It Follows' for example. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Oddity

Oddity was my first thought. It was so tense.

Paranormal Activity
Speak No Evil (there is a bit of gore but really not much)
Insidious

Event Horizon
The Others

Oh and a 1960s adaptation of The Turn of the Screw called The Innocents, starring Deborah Kerr. One of the most frightening films I've ever watched.

'The Popes Exorcist' with Russell Crowe is really good. I'm not a big horror fan but I really enjoyed this movie. I rented it on Amazon Prime.

It's a lot of fun but I wouldn't say it had a brooding atmosphere.

The Babadook
The Descent - claustrophobic and tense!

The Haunting - the original old black and white film from 1963. Scared me to death when I first saw it. From the book by Shirley Jackson. The Netflix Haunting of Hill House is the same story.

Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte - another old black and white film with Bette Davies

Rebecca - the original with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine

I find black and white films more creepy than colour
I think you can watch them on Amazon.

The fog

Old movie with George c. Scott, The Changeling. Creepy as hell. Also, His House on Netflix or Sky I think. Again, creepy as hell. Unusual premise, too. Really effective.

Nitgel · 08/11/2024 13:19

1980s The Thing

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/11/2024 13:21

Oh and The Daniel Radcliffe Woman in Black, The Others and Sixth Sense.

I came on to say this exactly.
Hugh Grant us incredible in this film.
Very little gore. Lots of intensity and creepiness!

Yes, this and Nope are excellent 👌

You might like Picnic at Hanging Rock. Victorian school girls go missing on a picnic in a heatwave. Nothing much happens but it's very atmospheric and brooding.

Never go to the cinema but might get over its lack of appeal for this one. Love Hugh Grant in every guise.

Don't Look Now (1973) and The Changeling (1980)

Fooksticks · 08/11/2024 13:28

Just came to say Oddity.

I knew nothing about it but dh suggested it.

It's not 'the best film ever' bit it really is scary, with atmosphere, without being gory.

I'm going through a supernatural horror phase and I leave it up to dh to recommend. This one didn't disappoint.
