Horror movies with a malevolent/brooding atmosphere?

Hi all!

Looking for recommendations for horror/spooky movies with a brooding/creepy atmosphere rather than gorey stuff. I like the 1970s 'Salem's Lot' adaptation and 'It Follows' for example. Any ideas?

Thanks!

'The Popes Exorcist' with Russell Crowe is really good. I'm not a big horror fan but I really enjoyed this movie. I rented it on Amazon Prime.

But his accent was ridiculous 😂

I'll second Heretic - Hugh Grant was superb.

Eden Lake - tense and disturbing as fuck.

Is that the one with the giant flying laundry?

???

Another oldie. Ghost Story, from the 1980s

And The Awakening, with Rebecca Hall, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West. Really brooding.

Looking forward to seeing Heretic! Always thought Hugh Grant had a creepy side to him :) especially after seeing Bridget Jones in the 90s!

The Descent always freaked me out - the night camera reveal scene still shits me up (although can't watch the whole thing after having my son - the beginning is too horrible).

I thought Eden Lake was good for the first half, then lost it in the second (does no-one in the family care that they'll be found out in about two seconds when she disappears? etc)

Caveat. A very dark, brooding slow burn, but the end has a fantastic twist and scared me in way I no longer thought possible. No blood or gore, just incredibly creepy, dark house !

Oddity as others have mentioned is also excellent and is a loose follow on from Caveat.

The Vanishing (the proper Dutch one)
It Follows is good fun too :)

Edit; Dutch not Danish! Thinking of Speak No Evil

I enjoyed The Dark

The fog

Brilliant film!

You should have recorded the Budget. 😂

A dark song. Warning: its pretty intense for a film about an occult ritual

It comes at night? Mark kermode recommends

The original Woman in Black. Made in 1989, starring Adrian Rawlins. Still scares me now!

Arrwedancers · 19/11/2024 19:05

Hereditary

YourAmplePlumPoster · 22/11/2024 17:38

The original Woman in Black made for TV which is on Amazon Prime.

"Whistle and I'll come to you." A story by M.R. James dramatised by Jonathan Miller on YouTube. Terrifying and very atmospheric in black and white.

Blair witch project

Uncle Silas 1947 movie on YouTube. A terrifying story by Le Fanu about a family trying to steal the fortune of an heiress.

Yes, this is fantastic!

YourAmplePlumPoster · 22/11/2024 19:50

Yes and also a genuine subtle Gothic thriller without gore or unecessary shocks. It's also quintissentially English - the unique subculture of the English guest house and the eccentric Oxbridge academic who is the protaganist. At first arrogant and sceptical and then gradually sucked in to the horror that he has uncovered.

JemimaTab · 23/11/2024 18:12

The Lighthouse: not sure if it's a horror as such, but it does have a brooding, unsettling feel throughout. I thought it was really good.

Also A Dark Song, which a couple of other posters have recommended.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 24/11/2024 09:02

A dark song. Where can I see this? Is it on streaming?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 24/11/2024 09:04

Angel Heart. Really atmospheric period setting in New Orleans. It's on Prime.
