Horror movies with a malevolent/brooding atmosphere?

Hi all!

Looking for recommendations for horror/spooky movies with a brooding/creepy atmosphere rather than gorey stuff. I like the 1970s 'Salem's Lot' adaptation and 'It Follows' for example. Any ideas?

Thanks!

There's a new Nosferatu coming out in January starring Johnny Depps daughter. Got a very good write up in the Independent.

Another one that has just occurred to me is Lake Mungo. I found it incredibly unsettling - no gore, just a couple of scares.

Also, I've recently been watching some of the old ghost stories from the 1970's - they can be quite "stagey" but there are some really good ones for making you feel quiet unease. There is also a 1-hour film in that vein called "Schalcken The Painter" (also 1970's) which is incredibly odd but quite scary.

I've always wanted to watch Lake Mungo but the thought of it makes it sound too gloomy and creepy.

The old M R James adaptions on Youtube are brilliant. I will check out Schlacken The Painter'!

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre had this sort of feel for me.

Totally different but more recently, The Fall on Netflix made me feel dizzy and quite ill!

Schalken the Painter is amazing as is the short story by Sheridan Le Fanu.

Yes Lake Mungo is very dark / bleak. It is good, but the themes (dread, grief, abandonment) are quite tough. It really sent a chill through me.

Definitely Oddity. I haven't felt as creeped out since watching The Fall.

Heretic ebbed and flowed for me. It started off so well and had some great moments of tension, but ultimately it fizzled out imo.

The Beguiled - very different from most Clint Eastwood films

You might like Picnic at Hanging Rock. Victorian school girls go missing on a picnic in a heatwave. Nothing much happens but it's very atmospheric and brooding.

Awesome film!

@localnotail yes they are brooding but 3 out of 4 of those are pretty gory.

Edited

Depends on what you see as "gory". I hate slasher films and would never watch any Saw movies, but I did not think Hereditery or Midsommer were particularly gory. Midsommer, maybe at a push.

Rosemary's Baby and the Wicket Man are not gory at all.

AndThereSheGoes · 21/12/2024 20:58

I guess people see gore differently . Heredity was the one with the decapitation in the car wasn't it?
The Wicker Man has a man burnt alive as it's grande finale. It's the violence the film you are remember

I hate gore/ violence so The Others, Sixth Sense, Woman in Black are more my things. Any grim bits in these are retold as past events rather than sitting through it as it happens.

Disclaimer...not watched Midsommer as although I like the concept, it's just going to get it "shocks" from people being hurt.

The Birds.

quirkychick · 21/12/2024 21:20

Oh, some great suggestions on here, I agree with The Others, Haunting of Hill House Series (prob influenced by the former), Wicker Man, Angel Heart, The Witch, The Changeling all very atmospheric. I'm going to watch this thread and watch some of these. I don't mind gore, but find psychological horror much more effective.

Nitgel · 24/12/2024 21:17

The great The Haunting from 1966 is on iplayer.
