Recommend a movie with no love and no death

DD is 13 and has just declared that she doesn't like movies with death or violence (she never has) and isn't interested in people falling in love with each other. So what else can we watch for family movie night?

All suggestions please

Most of Studio Ghibli (but be careful).

The Way Way Back

This is an absolutely fantastic film.

Glengarry Glen Ross. Funny film but all male cast.

Dogma?

no romance, don’t think there’s much death. Bit of violence.

but mainly Alan Rickman, God is alanis morissette, Matt Damon, Kevin smith…

Cheaper By the Dozen
Whale Rider
On the Basis of Sex (about Ruth Bader Ginsburg)
Moonrise Kingdom (12 year olds fall in love, but they're 12 so I don't think it counts)
Men In Black: International
The Ghostbusters with the female cast (and Chris Hemsworth as a himbo)
Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Maybe these, but I'm not 100% sure...

  • Finding Nemo
  • Lego movies
  • King Fu Panda
  • Dora the Explorer movie
  • Toy Story
  • Luca

I have a feeling that something bad happens to Nemo's mum at the beginning of the film ....

If she doesn't mind subtitles then Wadjda is really sweet coming of age story that is presently available to rent on Prime. It's the the first film ever shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and was directed by a Saudi woman.

There's a subplot about her mother worrying about her husband taking a second wife because he wants a son, but it's not romance focussed.

An enterprising 10 year old Saudi girl. Wadjda signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest.

I love Hunt For The Wilderpeople but there is both a human and animal death in it.

Galaxy Quest
Men in Black
School of Rock
Bill and Ted
The Spiderwick Chronicles

@Gabbysdollhouse I thought that Princess Bride (which is an amazing film) is almost entirely about true love.

Yes you’re right really I suppose I was thinking there’s a bunch of other stuff in there as well. I suppose some of the other stuff is sword fighting which probably also isn’t the thing!

Glengarry Glen Ross. Funny film but all male cast.

? It's a tragedy, not a comedy, and pretty heavy duty for a child

The Holdovers

Lots of love in the Holdovers - albeit of the best kind.

Napoleon Dynamite
Ghostbusters
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Spirited Away
Brick
The Craft
Superbad
Donnie Darko
Little Miss Sunshine
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Back to the Future

Donnie Darko has a LOT of love and quite a bit of violence (the main character shoots someone dead).

Clueless features several love stories; it's a romantic comedy. Some of these recs are dreadful...

Eddie the Eagle
Son of Rambow

On Netflix, Moxie! and You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah are quite good.

A lot of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler or Adam Sandler films would work actually.

Bridesmaids
Sisters
Mean Girls

Sports films?

Hustle
Bring It On
A League of Their Own
King Richard
Jerry Maguire
Karate Kid
Moneyball
Battle of the Sexes
Dodgeball

Jerry Maguire centres on one of cinema's most famous romances! 😆"You had me at hello", anyone?

I haven't seen all of these, but Bring It On also has a minor "love" story.

And someone suggested Wild: not only is it all about love (for one's mother, but still), but it contains quite a bit of graphic and rather disturbing sex. But maybe the OP is a very permissive parent...

This is quite a hard category! I'll have to think...

sashh · 22/09/2024 07:26

Has she seen Bill and Ted?

Another vote for 'The Help'.

Spirited Away.

Apollo 13.

True Spirit.

Saving Mr Banks

Not unless 'childhood trauma and parental death' is her kind of fun.

Ah shit, I forgot about that bit.
