DD is 13 and has just declared that she doesn't like movies with death or violence (she never has) and isn't interested in people falling in love with each other. So what else can we watch for family movie night?

All suggestions please

Planes, Trains and Automobiles
If you think she's old enough: Withnail and I

Withnail is almost dead though

About A Boy is old but another lovely film (it refers to.themum attempting suicide but not graphic, from what I remember) and it has excellent music

FleaDog · 19/09/2024 22:21

The Sean the Sheep film where they go to the city.

The sheep baa-ing their rendition of Everyday Feels Like Summer With You is a lovely piece of music that reminds me of dc being young

Some oldies I used to watch as a child 40 years ago.

Wizard of Oz (although a witch gets squashed with a house!) It could also bring about a discussion about films pre colour, and the sheer cost of colour film at the time.

The Trouble with Angels with Hayley Mills. A comedy, coming of age.

The Labyrinth

Home Alone

Back to the Future (Marty does have a girlfriend, but its not the premise of the story)

Short Circuit (I don't think there is death or love?)

Chicken Run (I can't recall if any cartoon chickens died though?)

FleaDog · 19/09/2024 22:21

Uncle Buck

Home Alone

There is death in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine".

A main character dies. It's quite a big plot point in the second half of the movie.

BlossomToLeaves · 19/09/2024 22:26

The King's Speech
Official Secrets

(not that there is zero mention of violence or death in either, but not the main part of the plot)

PermanentTemporary · 19/09/2024 22:26

Another vote for Bill and Ted, and for The Martian.

Maybe The Holdovers? Check the synopsis though.

I really can't see Withnail with its not-very-hidden subtext of paranoid homophobia and extreme drug use making sense in this context?

PermanentTemporary · 19/09/2024 22:29

I really liked View from the Top with Gwyneth Paltrow?

BlossomToLeaves · 19/09/2024 22:29

Chef (I think that's the one I liked) - made me hungry!

HeddaGarbled · 19/09/2024 22:30

The Parent Trap

parietal · 19/09/2024 22:33

Thanks for all the suggestions. Love is ok if it isn't the major motivation in the plot - Pride and Prejudice has been banned.

I'm a great fan of Withnail but I don't think she will be.

The Parent Trap

I was going to suggest the original one with Hayley Mills. The parents eventually get back together, but its mainly about the teen girls.

Actually, think only the last 2 might qualify. Quite tough criteria!

Robot Dreams - feature length animation based on a graphic novel, about friendship. Funny, uplifting, cute and also really poignant. I don't tend to go in for animated movies but I loved it.

The Canterville Ghost was great too, saw it in the cinema last year with my friend's kids. Ordinarily I wouldn't have bothered, but they asked me along and it was fab. Bit of death but only at the end and really well handled, has a sort of spiritual aspect the way it's done, and very kid-friendly.
