Who do and don't you consider a good/great actor of the modern age?

I love Charlize Theron as I'm never sure if it's her in a role! Similarly Cate Blanchett - both seem to manage to morph into their characters without excessive make up and change their voice too. I enjoy many of Sandra Bullocks films but she always sounds the same in each role, ditto Ann Hathaway.

I think Johnny Depp is a good actor although he does use a lot of make up in many of his roles. The likes of Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth all seem to play the same role with different costumes! Although very beautiful to look at with or without clothes Grin

Another vote for Toby Jones.

How could I have forgotten him?

Dustmylemonlies · 16/03/2025 20:20

I think Stanley Tucci is incredibly underrated...

Meryl Streep could read the shipping forecast and she'd still be captivating as hell

I agree, John Sim seems to stay under the radar and he’s a fantastic talent.

I know a tv writer who says John Sim is incredibly difficult, but people stick with him because he is an amazing actor

GellerYeller · 17/03/2025 19:47

@Surlydoors , I can’t think of a time I’ve seen him interviewed come to think of it. Apart from an ancestry type show with Phil Glenister. Is he a bit shy maybe?

EasternStandard · 17/03/2025 19:52

Stephen Graham
Meryl Streep
Benedict Cumberbatch
Cate Blanchett
Really like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon too

James Norton is outstanding

I agree

As are Cate Blanchett, Charlize Theron and Kate Winslet.
Saoirse Ronan and Jessie Buckley are great too.
As are Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson.

Love Samantha Morton and Molly Windsor too.

Molly Windsor drives me mental, for no good reason.

Samantha Morton is wonderful as is Liv Hill.

Dogaredabomb · 11/07/2025 15:27

Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss. I would count all of them as artists.

Keira Knightly is very annoying!

Difficult in what way? Exacting, prickly, churlish?

I don’t get the Judi Dench adulation. It didn’t happen until she got old. She always seems to be ACTING. Like Olivia Colman. Not just acting.

I completely agree

deeahgwitch · 11/07/2025 16:29

I meant to add Gleeson to the Brendan in my post. He’s a fine actor.

ZiggyZowie · 12/07/2025 21:51

Tom Hardy

Buggysy · 12/07/2025 22:20

I haven't watched many of her films but recently watched Monster with Charlize Theron and just wow. Incredible acting. Must seek out some more of her films.

I admire many actors and actresses. Evan Peters did an incredible job of portraying Jeffrey Dahmer. Totally disturbing to watch, he absolutely nailed it.

Daisy62 · 12/07/2025 23:14

Ben Wishaw is extremely good. Mesmerising on stage.

Shinyandnew1 · 12/07/2025 23:26

Cillian Murphy
Jodie Comer
Stephen Graham
Matthew Goode
Tobias Menzies
Matt Damon

SerafinasGoose · 13/07/2025 00:58

Anthony Hopkins, Ruth Wilson, Viggo Mortensen, the late Diana Rigg.

SaintGermain · 13/07/2025 09:56

That’s funny as I consider Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett to be awfully wooden!

Depp used to be a good actor but now he is rubbish.

Sandra Bulloxk and Jennifer Anniston are the same in every film and just play a louder or quieter version of themselves.

Margot Robbie was dreadful as Sharon Tate and she always looks like she is aware the camera js on her.

Timothy Chamolet is popular but another one who is camera aware and not very good.

Kate Hudson only got the jobs because of her mother and stepfathers reputation, she’s appalling

He’s a genius. Even a fluffy little part, like the comedy prison bully with a well-hidden heart of gold in Paddington 2, he just makes weirdly credible.

Gary Oldman
Stephen Graham

Sarah Lancashire
Nicola Walker

Brilliant in Downtown

Unpleasant

Muminthemiddle22 · 21/07/2025 14:00

Half the cast of brassica…

Joseph Gilgun who plays Vinnie

Ryan Sampson who plays Thommo

Bronagh Gallagher who plays Carol

AuntieMarys · 21/07/2025 14:15

Robert Duvall

deeahgwitch · 21/07/2025 19:05

Judi Dench - fantastic as Philomena
James Norton - terrifying as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley and wondrously caring terminally ill Dad in Nowhere Special.

powershowerforanhour · 28/07/2025 00:52

The McDonagh brothers cast good actors in their films and get fine performances out of them. Colin Farrell hasn't been mentioned yet. He plays the drunk pub argument scene in The Banshees of Inisherin well - if he'd got it wrong it would have just been ridiculous. Kerry Condon was excellent in the film too.
