Who do and don't you consider a good/great actor of the modern age?

I love Charlize Theron as I'm never sure if it's her in a role! Similarly Cate Blanchett - both seem to manage to morph into their characters without excessive make up and change their voice too. I enjoy many of Sandra Bullocks films but she always sounds the same in each role, ditto Ann Hathaway.

I think Johnny Depp is a good actor although he does use a lot of make up in many of his roles. The likes of Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth all seem to play the same role with different costumes! Although very beautiful to look at with or without clothes Grin

Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Daniel-day Lewis

CrossPurposes · 25/07/2024 13:58

I like Amy Adams (Arrival is one of my favourite modern films) and Julianne Moore.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/07/2024 14:04

Robert Downey Jr has a very ecclectic mix of work, he is very talented imo.

I don't have much to say about Eddie Redmayne, I find him cringeworthy.
I find Tom Hardy off putting and Liam Hemsworth is god awful.

MightyGoldBear · 25/07/2024 14:09

Tobias menzies I find a very good actor in that I really believe he is the person he is acting and forget he is an actor. In outlander particularly and the crown.

eddiemairswife · 25/07/2024 14:15

Simon Russel Beale.

whatsinanameeh · 25/07/2024 14:19

I think Christopher Eccleston is brilliant. If he stars in or produces something outside my normal genre of interest, I will take a look.

I think Ryan Reynolds plays himself in everything and he's in likeable generally.

Tom Hollander
Richard E Grant
Eva Green

James Norton is outstanding

WillimNot · 25/07/2024 14:21

Good: Diane Keaton, Tom Hanks, Anne Hathaway
Bad: Tom Cruise

Raquelos · 25/07/2024 14:25

I agree with Amy Adams, I find her really compelling in anything she is in. Also Johnny Depp, although I think he leaned into his charisma more than his acting skills in the pirates franchise, tbh.

I think Cillian Murphy is excellent as well, he is very understated, he has that talent of being expressive without seeming to change his facial expressions, you can almost see him thinking (probably that's called acting 😆)

Dearg · 25/07/2024 14:26

Robert Carlyle is probably my favourite actor.

Dougray Scott, Russell Crowe & Tom Cruise are instant turn off for me

Love Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett. Katherine Hepburn was wonderful

binglemyoats · 25/07/2024 14:28

Alan Cumming, Kyle McLachlan - known for their offbeat and strange performances. Was always fascinated by Kyle's choices as he had the looks for the typical boring leading man roles but he's consistently chosen unusual and quirky roles instead. I respect that

Laura Dern, something otherworldly about her. Annette Bening always great too

LightDrizzle · 25/07/2024 14:30

Cate Blanchett
Ralph Fiennes
Daniel Day Lewis
Jodie Comer

BigDahliaFan · 25/07/2024 14:33

I didn't think much of Tom Hardy till I saw him in Locke - it's really just him driving and on the phone. It's fantastic and so is he!

mark Rylance...stupendous. (though think he wasn't right for Wolf Hall).

Daniel Day Lewis just plays Daniel Day Lewis in every film and it’s really annoying. I can’t stand him.

Izzynohopanda · 25/07/2024 14:45

After watching Brigerton, Nicola Coughlin. Superb actress.

Can’t go far wrong with films starting Tom Hanks, Leonardo de Caprio, Morgan freeman,

Have you seen 'in the name of the father'?? Do you think he often presents as an Irish republican?

OMGsamesame · 25/07/2024 14:50

Michael Sheen, Jason Watkins, Toby Jones, Claire Foy, Janet McTeer, Jodie Comer, David Haigh, Rosie Cavaliero I think are great, just off the top of my head.

Janedoe82 · 25/07/2024 14:50

Not great- Jimmy Nesbit. He seems to be the same in everything.
