Who do and don't you consider a good/great actor of the modern age?

I love Charlize Theron as I'm never sure if it's her in a role! Similarly Cate Blanchett - both seem to manage to morph into their characters without excessive make up and change their voice too. I enjoy many of Sandra Bullocks films but she always sounds the same in each role, ditto Ann Hathaway.

I think Johnny Depp is a good actor although he does use a lot of make up in many of his roles. The likes of Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth all seem to play the same role with different costumes! Although very beautiful to look at with or without clothes Grin

Jonny Depp used to be brilliant but he’s phoning it in these days. Probably all the booze.

Denzel Washington
Timothee Chalamet
Emma Thompson

AcquadiP · 09/03/2025 19:31

The late Maggie Smith and Daniel Craig, both great actors.

Jamclag · 09/03/2025 19:58

Greats - as in the top 10 who will make me watch a movie/TV show purely because they're in it:

Meryl Streep
Sarah Lancashire
Cate Blanchet
Emily Blunt
Brie Larsen
Carey Mulligan
Merritt Weaver
Emma Stone
Saoirse Ronan
Florence Pugh

For male actors my interest is much more dependent on the actual plot/story/character - although I'm quite fond of Colin Farrell 😅

ThymeScent · 09/03/2025 20:00

Great:
Billy-Bob Thornton
Andrew Scott

Wigtopia · 09/03/2025 20:04

Ralph Fiennes - I find him mesmerising.

Cameron Diaz - just plays herself I think

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Ian Mckellan and Judi Dench

I don’t get the Judi Dench adulation. It didn’t happen until she got old. She always seems to be ACTING. Like Olivia Colman. Not just acting.

Muminthemiddle22 · 09/03/2025 20:09

Excellent:
Jodie comer
Florence Pugh
Stephen Graham

How could I have forgotten Jodie Comer? She is the best.

SpottedDonkey · 09/03/2025 20:24

Good : Michael Sheen, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Grant, who has matured into an outstanding character actor.

Bad : Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly

Papadonut · 09/03/2025 20:25

Good: Cillian Murphy. Helen McRory. Eddie Redmayne.

Bad: Adrian brody.

I am a big fan of peaky blinders.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 09/03/2025 20:34

Simon Russell Beale. Since 1988 i think in Duchess of Malfi at Greenwich.

Mark Rylance - his Iago was astonishing.

Ralph Fiennes - he just was Gareth Southgate.

I don’t like David Tennant either. Far too much gesticulation. He was appalling in The Goblet of Fire.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/03/2025 21:03

Another vote for Toby Jones.

MaryGreenhill · 16/03/2025 19:57

Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant
Jody Whittaker ruined Dr Who imho

taxguru · 16/03/2025 20:11

I don't get why people think Judi Dench and Meryl Streep are good actors. I just don't see it at all. Maybe it's just what I've seen them in, they're nothing special at all. Maybe they've done things brilliantly that I've not seen. I just don't get the hero-worshipping of them.

Best in my opinion is Jodie Comer who's been awesome in everything I've seen her in.

Simon Russel Beale.

Amen. He’s the only actor I’ll see in anything, even Mamet. And the only actor who, having seen him in something, I’ve more than once bought a ticket to see it again asap. (See also Alex Jennings, Harriet Walter, Janet McTeer, Fiona Shaw.)

I’ve found Cillian Murphy impressive on stage, too, though I’ve seen almost none of his film roles, as I never think they’re interesting. Brendan Gleeson is a genius. Olwen Foueré, too.
