I don't think Heath Ledger was a good Joker.
I don't think he fitted it very well.
He over acted in every scene.

And he only one the Oscar because he died

@Ramalangadingdong I know right? You’re going through and it’s all beautifully done and then you pause and remember the lead looks like and is portraying an underage teen.

With Barbie, I wouldn’t even say I thought it was a bad film. I just think Ken‘s storyline needed more nuance and overall it was defeatist.

Grease is awful. Dreadful message to send - you can get your man if you change how you dress and behave. I've seen people say 'he changes his he dressed too'. No. He put on a cardigan, that he took off first charge he got.

I love lost in translation - but I completely understand why so many don't. It's slow, it's character driven rather than action or plot based. It was never going to be a massive box office hit. I think I love it because it reminds me of a friendship I once had.

I love Lost in Translation — tbh, on here I think liking it is a more unpopular opinion than loathing it!

" tbh, on here I think liking it is a more unpopular opinion than loathing it!"

I agree - so far we are in the minority for sure!

I can't watch most Tarantino films. I keep thinking that I need to catch up and then I start watching and I just have to switch off. His last one was awful. The best thing in it was Margo Robbie. But it had a really comic scene where Brad Pitt totally destroyed Bruce Lee in a fight. That made me laugh and laugh and says everything about Tarantino as a fantasist.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a fantasy. He totally rewrites history especially with regard to the Manson family. I think the "once upon a time" is a nod to this ie it's a fairy story not reality. I found how he dealt with the Manson accolytes hugely satisfying.

I am not really a Tarantino fan but I really liked Jackie Brown. Especially Pam Grier's character.

OH and I enjoyed Lost In Translation which surprised us as we have wildly different tastes in films and not a lot actually happens.

Bond movies.. I find the concept of 'Bond Girls' really creepy. Especially in the older ones..

Anthony Hopkins is hammy

I think Brian Cox is a much better Hannibal

But I think virtually everyone would agree with you that the whole concept of the ‘Bond girl’ as a decorative sex object, complete with double entendre name in some cases, and always much younger than JB, is deeply creepy and misogynistic!

I like Jackie Brown too - it's the only Tarantino film I like.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore is the only Martin Scorsese film I like.

Amelie - Utter PISH

Mzrcd · 22/02/2024 21:27

Films should be 90 mins max. Anything longer is self-indulgence from the director.

TheaBrandt · 22/02/2024 21:40

The older I get the less patience I have for “men” films - by men about men male gaze women incidental. BORING

Tinker Tailor soldier spy - lots of men whispering. Almost cried with boredom.

Find like Coen brothers overrated. More men men men.

Liked Lost in translation loved Barbie Oppenheimer another man film but liked the history angle.

I once watched Emma Watson in ‘Noah’. The ark was less wooden.

😂😂😂😂

TheaBrandt · 22/02/2024 21:44

Yeah Emma really can’t act. She got lucky as a girl but it’s not translated into adulthood. Really ruined Meg in Little Women

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 22/02/2024 21:48

Any film that involves aliens will have lazy writing. The Aliens are always used to explain things away that the writers can't be bothered to wrap up themselves, it's the scifi version of ending a story with "and it was all a dream".

Avator is just a worse version of Fern Gully like... "what if Fern Gully also had a white saviour situation" that's Avator.

Madamswearsalot · 22/02/2024 21:51

Barbie was pretty rubbish - feminism for dummies.
Lost in translation was fantastic
Beverley hills cops 2 is the finest of all the sequels
Down with love with Renee Zelwegger and Ewan McGregor was so terrible I wanted to punch myself in the face
Brigit Jones was AWFUL

the80sweregreat · 22/02/2024 21:57

La la land has the best ending of any Hollywood film ever and I don't like musicals much and didn't really rate the rest of the film either !
Just loved it's ending
ET is rubbish and I never understood the love for it
The Harry Potter books are far superior to the films

TheaBrandt · 22/02/2024 21:58

I had a weird reaction to the end of La La land couldn’t stop crying - the life not lived thing. My kids were baffled.

the80sweregreat · 22/02/2024 22:00

Yep, La La land it was inspired to end it like that ! Made a change

My favourite Lala Land scene was where she makes him play bad eighties music when he’s in the cover band.

Oppenheimer is so boring. Didn't finish it.

Hell no! One of my favourites!

SocksAndTheCity · 22/02/2024 22:42

I hated La La Land, and had to sit through the whole thing because my friend paid me in for my birthday. At the end it turned out he hated it too and we could have gone and got a KFC twenty minutes in.

I had wiped Down With Love from my memory until this thread, @Madamswearsalot 🤣

Good point about Avatar - the first one was so bad! I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch the second one Grin

Second one was worse.

Oppenheimer being a case in out. Barbie would have been much better if it came in at 90 mins.

Guavafish1 · 23/02/2024 01:50

La la land was rubbish except the ending.

Kiera knightly and Orlando Bloom are wooden actors. The movie version of pride and prejudice was rubbish.

Marvel and DC films are rubbish

Napoleon was not a great film.
