I can’t decide what I thought of this.

It just seemed like exactly the sort of thing that I would enjoy.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant were brilliant. It was entertaining. I enjoyed all the references to Waugh and The Go-Between and The Talented Mr Ripley…

… but I am fairly sure that I would not watch it again. How did you find it?

Funnily, just saw a replay clip of the bicycle scene in an interview between Jacob and Jimmy Fallon and BK’s Irish accent jumped out at me which I hadn’t really noticed when I watched the film a week ago.

StoneTheCrone · 20/01/2024 22:37

Just watched this. Bloody brilliant all round. Great acting, cast, set, story.

I didnt anticipate the plot twist at all and didnt find it particularly disturbing either. Looking forward to watching it again. Loved the ending.

Solow12 · 20/01/2024 23:26

Just watched it - I’m a sucker for the hype!
Overall didn’t love it. Thought it was quite well paced but a bit clunky in places with the dialogue and over-explaining. Some lovely visuals and brilliant scenes and generally very atmospheric.
BK was so miscast though - accent all over the place and really can’t pass for an 18-20 year old. But I find him compelling and thought he was incredible in Banshees.
Jacob Elordi on the other hand was exquisite - great casting there. Same for Rosamund Pike.
Thought the ending was ridiculous - felt like it was done more for the novelty and shock value than meaning. Same with the bathtub and Venetia garden scene.
Overall it made me and DH want to watch Mr Ripley again!

IHateLegDay · 20/01/2024 23:53

Just finished watching it and hour ago and I honestly wouldn't rate it.
It started off well and seemed like it was really going somewhere but I was bored.
Also, all the shock value was unnecessary.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/01/2024 00:51

He sounded very Scouse to me!

As a scouser, he really didn't sound scouse 😂 there were bits here and there but he kept losing the accent and going Irish again (and sometimes sounded Mancunian).

colouringindoors · 22/01/2024 22:09

Well.

Certainly striking and stylish and RP was perfection. I felt it got a bit clichéd when the body count rose though. But certainly sticks in your head!

joelmillersbackpack · 24/01/2024 22:45

I’ve just watched it and it was set right at the time when I was at university. Coming from a working class town and going to a good university, a lot of it feels very familiar. Being exposed to people with vastly different backgrounds, people who are from a completely different world. And you get a temporary window into that world but you don’t belong. That, and the music, which is mostly true to being 18 or 19 at that time.

TR888 · 24/01/2024 22:58

Very good but spoilt by the rubbish end scene where he speaks to a bed bound R Pike.

Yes this.

Just watched it without knowing anything about it so was surprised by some of the plot.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 30/01/2024 15:43

So did he see off the dad too? I assumed so and made it look like a suicide.

superoz · 31/01/2024 01:01

Just finished watching over 2 nights - what a ride! Not sure what to make of it yet, it was entertaining, but pretty far fetched.

Oliver was quite the psychopathic liar but nothing pointed to why he was like that, his parents were perfectly average and their relationship wasn’t terrible. His end monologue seemed to say that he had planned it all along. Although at times he appeared to be very emotional, or was that just him lying to himself?

Also dh and I thought the mirror that was fixed would come into play later. That maybe someone in the house was watching all along, but it never got mentioned again which was disappointing. I would have preferred it if his plans were thwarted by Duncan.

It was all a bit too convenient and easy, it would have worked better as a straight up black comedy because we could then forgive the plot holes, rather than a mixed bag of genres. But I’m nitpicking now, I enjoyed it for the most part other than the disgusting parts!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 31/01/2024 20:16

Was the mirror smashing a dream then- cause you're right, there was no explanation about that.

Or was it someone covering for him

superoz · 31/01/2024 21:50

I did wonder that too, whether he thought he had smashed the mirror but it was all in his head.
Thought it might be significant but never got mentioned again.

Alwaysdieting · 01/02/2024 06:32

I too thought it wasnt all that. Rosamund Pike was lovely and I love Richard E Grant and his sticky up hair, but the film its self is very over rated like most top films these days. The end scene was rubbish also but I like the song.

mids2019 · 04/02/2024 06:32

Maybe I am being a little on faced here but as a northerner who applied to Cambridge years ago I felt the northerner (Liverpudlian) as an outsider a bit of a dated trope and one I suppose Oxbridge want to see diminished. There was a sense that the protagonist didn't like his mediocre staid life in Liverpool so made a fantasy to make him look more interesting to for in with the wealthier crowd. The autistic genius at the beginning demanding maths question a was again a little bit of a tired of cliche and in these days of welcoming biodiversity I don't know quite how this came across really. I think you could have taken the two main characters and placed them in any university to be honest......

The rest of the film was brilliant especially the twist at the end but it did leave me wondering whether decadent old money and bohemian families is in reality something of a different era.....(just speculating as I definitely an not in that class!). Good to see class.division in general as a theme.

Brilliant though Barry keoghan is, he doesn't pass as a 19 year old student. I found that distracting. I liked it though.

100%

SPOILER

The mother said she was surprised it took him so long. I assumed suicide.

Made to look like suicide.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/02/2024 21:59

Just watching The talented Mr Ripley, have never seen it before. Saltburn is basically a rip off/re-make of it.. 🤔

rosewain24 · 09/02/2024 10:23

I thought it was great. Rosamund Pike was incredible in it!

Except Saltburn is so much better

peachgreen · 09/02/2024 10:34

Honestly I wanted to just watch 3 hours of Rosamund Pike, Richard E Grant and Carey Mulligan being rich and awful, it was delightful. Could have lived without the rest of it!

They were all so fantastic, loved them.

I think everyone has to admit the film isn't amazing quality but not worry about that and just enjoy it.

Looking for plot holes etc just ruins I

I do agree. It is better. I was thinking about it today. I definitely preferred saltburn. But I think I'm surprised at the fan fayre around the director when it is a kind of "done before" film.
