I can’t decide what I thought of this.

It just seemed like exactly the sort of thing that I would enjoy.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant were brilliant. It was entertaining. I enjoyed all the references to Waugh and The Go-Between and The Talented Mr Ripley…

… but I am fairly sure that I would not watch it again. How did you find it?

Can’t decide if I want to see it. I’m squeamish about blood, vomit etc, should I avoid it?

Yes its probably not the film for you for a number of reasons Xmas Blush!

Mydogisagentleman · 23/12/2023 06:56

Bloody excellent film.
Me and my DD saw it on Wednesday, it was either that or Wonka.
I think we made the right choice

1975wasthebest · 23/12/2023 07:48

I thought it was rather tame, surprising from the writer and director of Promising Young Woman. I had no investment at all in the story. But I loved Rosalind Pike and agree Barry looked too old to play 19. I’m glad I saw it on Prime, rather than spend a tenner to see it at the cinema.

brawnthesheep · 23/12/2023 07:52

I quite liked it but not 100% sure. Was he really a scholarship boy or was that because he was so clever as he’s wasn’t poor?

The bath, blood scenes were yuck but as pp said i’m sure they were meant to be & he was consuming them.

brawnthesheep · 23/12/2023 07:53

RP was great

Christmassss · 23/12/2023 17:48

I enjoyed it, I just watched Priscilla and the tall posh guy plays Elvis, he’s really good in that too.

mizu · 23/12/2023 19:58

Got Amazon Prime free for 30 days so I could watch this - I really liked it. As a pp said about the ending: genius, fabulous finish. It's not often you see a willie flapping around like that !

Loved the set, the colours, the acting was great and I love Rosamund Pike.

DD watched before me at the cinema and liked it too.

Should have watched them back to back Grin

We turned it off fairly early on and maybe will revisit, but it reminded me of mismash of Morse episodes, Brideshead and a few other dramas at the beginning.

AreYouShittingMe · 24/12/2023 12:06

I loved it- disturbing and funny, but I didn't know where the story was heading. Loved REG and RP, and their family dynamics. Very tight knit family but the way they were manipulated was clever and subtle. Well written script and wonderful visually.

blu124 · 24/12/2023 13:56

absolutely loved it. Loved that it wasn't immediately obvious what was going on with Oliver and that was in conjunction with the family not knowing what he was about either.
Clever.

Mirrormeback · 24/12/2023 14:17

I really enjoyed it and that it went in an unexpected direction

Some of the scenes were very intense which was great. Parts were a bit lazy and could have been better but all in all a better than expected film

I think I will probably rewatch later in the year

Mirrormeback · 24/12/2023 14:19

Also I think Saltburn would have gone to the nearest male relative as no way would she have been allowed to sign it all over like that. As soon as her DH died it would automatically pass on to the next male heir precisely so it can't just be willy nilly passed on through manipulation or gambling or whatever

DonnasShrugaleros · 24/12/2023 15:32

I wondered if the cousin, Farley, would have ended up with the house.

Trying to write this without spoilers but I'd have LOVED to see him in the last scene with stubble/beard.

I love BK and am so glad he's getting the limelight he deserves but I did think it was a stretch having a 30 year old play a teenager.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2023 17:09

Just watched it on Amazon and loved it. Total escapism and didn't look at my phone or pause to make a cup of tea once. Dh loved it too.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 20:20

Spoiler alert........
...

I feel Oliver went for all of them because he overheard them talking about him that first morning and thought ' ah, I'll make them pay'
I liked Felix and I felt sorry for him the most
He should have told him to leave after he met his parents , but he was just too nice
It was certainly different.

VivienneDelacroix · 24/12/2023 20:27

I've commented on the thread in TV, but will repeat here :

I really liked it and am obviously some kind of deviant as I didn't find it shocking particularly. No more than many films which are a 15 certificate. The graveside scene isn't graphic and doesn't involve a body. I was just thinking how long it would take him to clean himself.

It was very derivative and I wondered how intentional that was. Not just to Brideshead, but there were elements of The Secret History, American Psycho, Interview with the Vampire...But it was still a brilliant film. I did guess early on how it would end, but I don't think that mattered.

Rosamund Pike was brilliant.
I think Barry Keoghan is a bit like Björk in that he has and ageless face.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 20:37

Barry Keoghan has the most unusual face I've ever seen on an actor tbh !
He had a bad start in life so i'm glad his had so much success and im sure he'll have even more in time. He was certainly intense in this.
I adored Brideshead Revisited on tv and loved the book , this had similarities , but with many more twists. They even mentioned a teddy bear !

MaitreKarlsson · 24/12/2023 20:44

I enjoyed it but the second half felt like a different film to the first half. As PPs have said, it's a mishmash of lots of other films- yes Brideshead but also the Little Stranger and Talented Mr Ripley.
Rosamund Pike was the best. I hope she's offered a lot more comedies!

N4ish · 24/12/2023 20:49

I really enjoyed it and will definitely watch it again. Having said that I think the ending was too drawn out and it would have been more impactful if it had finished 15 minutes before it actually did.

Rosalind Pike and Carey Mulligan were both absolutely brilliant. Also liked the fact it was made by a female director so definitely a change from the usual male gaze.

Felix wasn't nice! He had a new Oliver ever year as did his mother. People/ things meant nothing and could just be tossed aside when they were bored with them.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2023 22:22

Yeah, I guess so about Felix , but I still felt he had a raw deal and could have thrown Oliver out after meeting his parents , but he didn't
So he wasn't all bad

He'd already had enough of him by then, he was looking for ways to get rid of him, he knew his mum wasn't a drug addict before he got there. That's why he refused to turn back in the car when Oliver begged him to. He just wanted him back for the party as it was for Oliver so there would be too much explaining to the parents, nothing nice about what he did. IMO 😂

Needsomebloodyperspective · 24/12/2023 22:57

The director is from old money Emerald Fennell she is of the Fennell jewellery family and also played Camilla in the Crown. She is hugely talented.

It was brilliant, the grave scene though and the bath tub 🙈

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2023 23:48

Oh I didn't realise that was her!
