I can’t decide what I thought of this.

It just seemed like exactly the sort of thing that I would enjoy.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant were brilliant. It was entertaining. I enjoyed all the references to Waugh and The Go-Between and The Talented Mr Ripley…

… but I am fairly sure that I would not watch it again. How did you find it?

I do agree. It is better. I was thinking about it today. I definitely preferred saltburn. But I think I'm surprised at the fan fayre around the director when it is a kind of "done before" film.

I think it's more of an homage to TTMR, Brides head, Atonement rather than a copy cat.

Late to the salt burn party and just watched it. Absolutely loved every minute of it! Rosamund Pike was fantastic as was Richard E Grant and of course Barry. Really enjoyed the whole film

I absolutely loved Rosamund Pike and carrie mulligan in it! They were great

Just watched this evening on Prime. I had managed to avoid much about it all I knew was there was a decadent party somewhere in the film and Murder on the dance floor featured. We loved it though Oxbridge DH was very much commenting on how no one stood on the grass in the quads in college as it was bad form.

A coffee pod advert on the tube makes reference to this film (about bathwater disappearing).

Just watched and read this thread, nobody has mentioned The Go-Between in all the films/books it plays homage to. All the references to the heat made it pretty clear, but the friendship dynamic and the family dynamic were similar. Plus the poor boy comes to stay, needs the posh kit to fit in, loves their lifestyle, hero of the match/party, wreaks havoc on the family etc.
Overall I loved it, but would have liked a little more explanation re things like the mirror, what was that brief clip about the antique bowl- something about an auction??? Why would he wait so long for the dad to kill himself before going back to finish the job?
Definitely nice to see lots of male nudity and no female nudity for a change. No breasts every other scene even when it's not needed (oppenheimer I'm looking at you, I mean even a film about a bomb had to be sexed up for the male audience??). Refreshing.
Some very funny lines from REG and RP- can we have a spinoff just about them please?

I really didn't like it. I turned off when they went to parents house and the dad/mum (can't remember which) wasn't dead, he wasn't an only child and clearly wasn't poor. I thought it was a ridiculous story line. Anyone else should have dumped his sorry lying arse at that point. The bath scene was revolting as was the sex scene with the sister while on her period. I was watching it thinking why am I watching this? Wasn't enjoying it at all. Had no interest in/care about any of the characters so switched it off.

Marvellous film. Totally gripping from start to finish. Disturbing and hilarious. The ending had me grinning like an idiot! Feel like there's so must I've missed so I'll be watching again. Massive bonus was the lack of female gratuitous nudity which is boringly prevalent in so many productions.

QueenBitch666 · 01/04/2024 14:40

Didn't find the bath and grave scenes particularly shocking. I expected worse after all the hype

Same. I’m left wondering if I’ve a warped mind given I wasn’t shocked or repulsed 😂

Bobsledgirl · 04/04/2024 20:29

I think people who were shocked maybe don’t watch many non mainstream films.

89redballoons · 04/04/2024 20:59

I watched it again the other night with DH who hadn't seen it. He wasn't remotely shocked by the plug/grave scenes. I think when you know what's coming it loses its shock value.

rookiemere · 04/04/2024 22:28

I think the scenes were more visceral when we saw it at the cinema. I can imagine it not having as much impact on a small screen.

JMSA · 08/04/2024 00:56

Watched it last night and loved it. It has been in my thoughts lots today, which is surely the mark of a good film.
I never watch the same film twice, but would easily make an exception for this.

purpleme12 · 20/02/2026 00:37

I thought it was really disturbing

And really ridiculous
