I can’t decide what I thought of this.

It just seemed like exactly the sort of thing that I would enjoy.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant were brilliant. It was entertaining. I enjoyed all the references to Waugh and The Go-Between and The Talented Mr Ripley…

… but I am fairly sure that I would not watch it again. How did you find it?

Bathtub 🤢

the80sweregreat · 25/12/2023 09:43

What a scoundrel he was though
Inheriting the house was genius.

inkblink · 25/12/2023 18:58

For some reason I'd got the idea that the shocking twist involved zombies - I'm not sure how! It was probably better for a lack of zombies

Crispedia · 26/12/2023 01:05

Found it distinctly underwhelming.

BeadedBubbles · 27/12/2023 00:47

I thought it was rather brilliant and very clever.

decionsdecisions62 · 27/12/2023 01:39

It was worth a watch but dad said 'it's so different' I said no it's talented mr ripley meets buffalo bill.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/12/2023 04:53

I really enjoyed it. Lots of vibes from other films, especially The Talented Mr Ripley, but I felt that was deliberate.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant were brilliant.

I watched it with my 81 year old Mum and her partner, with DH and with our 25 year old son. None of us knew where to look during the bathtub scene. 😅

Bobsledgirl · 27/12/2023 05:22

Loved it. Jacob Elordi was great as Felix.

3kidsaremorethanenough · 27/12/2023 09:27

Watched it last night. Throughly enjoyed it. Thought BK was a tad too old for the role, but he was brilliant. Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant just brilliant. Got Talented Mr Ripley vibes but also a bit of Donna Tarts Secret History about it too.

Beautifully shot. Where is that house does anyone know?

3kidsaremorethanenough · 27/12/2023 09:29

The bath scene (which I was waiting for!) Wasn't as bad as I expected. But the grave scene 😮😮😮😮

TheMarzipanDildoWithTinselDisguise · 27/12/2023 09:45

No one is making this comparison (it’s all Brideshead and Mr Ripley) but I thought it was very Wuthering Heights plot wise.

How so?

wanttoplayboardgames · 27/12/2023 10:17

Appreciate it will need a heavy spoiler alert... but I'm a wimp with films and really want to watch this... can I ask what happens with the grave and bath scene?!

Bobsledgirl · 27/12/2023 10:18

It’s sexual rather than violent.

Spoilers

Lad from dubious origins in Liverpool moves into another family’s house, is obsessed with one of them who eventually gets a bit tired of him, object of obsession dies tragically at 19ish, protagonist does weird things with the grave/body, some other people incl. a now alcoholic sibling die in suspicions circs., protagonists goal is now to manipulate everyone to the extent that he gets to inherit the fancy house and thus wreak vengeance on the people who looked down on him (and get a fancy house)

Oliver was more of a pure psychopath and Heathcliff was genuinely wronged (and doesn’t dance about naked at the end) but still!

I may need to get a life!

BeadedBubbles · 27/12/2023 10:54

@TheMarzipanDildoWithTinselDisguise

I see what you mean. Though Heathcliffe was an opportunist and very much a victim. He also didn't kill the object of his passions.

Icantbedoingwithit · 27/12/2023 10:58

Absolutely loved it. Beautifully shot. I think the scenes people were shocked at were very hyped up and I expected them to be a million times worse. The ending scene was genius. Will definitely watch it again to see the subtleties I missed the first time round.

ProperEnglishMustard · 27/12/2023 11:07

I thought it was clever but slightly disturbing - saw it at the cinema and there were lots of ‘ewwwws’ at the bath and grave scenes.

Has Promising Young Woman been mentioned (haven’t rtwt)? Also clever and a bit twisted imo.

Emerald Fennel is clever at crafting this sort of thriller. Wonder what her No 3. will be.

BeadedBubbles · 27/12/2023 11:25

@ProperEnglishMustard - I watched a clip of Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo reviewing Saltburn. MK clearly liked it but SM kept saying it wasn't nearly as good as Promising Young Woman. So that's on my watch list now!

Yes, Heathcliff is much more justified in his unhingedness.
It was just the grave bit that made me connect them really, and then I got carried away!

PYW was really really good.

Elthamjohn · 27/12/2023 14:02

@TheMarzipanDildoWithTinselDisguise I think you are onto something with Wuthering Heights.

But is Oliver projecting himself onto the Heathcliff story? - the adopted plaything who returns to take revenge and usurp his former benefactors/oppressors.

Heathcliff can’t go through with wiping everyone out. And he does have more of a motive. But he is a bit necrophiliac towards the end.

Oliver is more motiveless malignity, but WH is pretty close—more so than Ripley and Brideshead, actually. And Preston is a bit closer, too!

I'm just adding to this thread because I watched in at the weekend and can't stop thinking about it. I wasn't even sure I was enjoying it when watching but i think the performances have just really stuck in my mind. I've literally thought about it every day since. I keep watching the trailer, I don't know what's wrong with me. I don't even know if I liked it 😂 someone make sense of it for me.

WinterDeWinter · 27/12/2023 14:53

@89redballoons I think 'scholarship boy' is used as a generic 'Not One Of Us' put down, and not necessarily to be taken literally.

I really enjoyed it too - a little uneven but lots of fun.

In terms of the 'class message', I think we were intended to feel that the upper classes always, always win - unless/until they come up against a psychopath ie very very rarely. So it wasn't a conservative message particularly and we weren't intended to feel sorry for them.

Frenchdressing · 27/12/2023 15:41

@Winnipeggy it has stayed with me. Sign of a good film I think. Great performances and I’d lust after JE if he was more in my age band 😆
