Scariest film you’ve seen

What has been the scariest movie you’ve ever seen, one that freaks you out, even years later?

I still remember seeing the original When a Stranger Calls & Sleeping With The Enemy. Psychological thrillers scare me more than horror or gore. The building of suspense.

Two for me....

Mirrors, I used to live in an old terraced house with the bathroom downstairs. If I ever needed the toilet in the middle of the night I would have to pass our bedroom mirror, mirror over the fireplace, bathroom mirror etc and all I could think about was that film! If you've seen it you will know what I mean. I would literally sprint back upstairs to bed.

Also the Shining, that's always freaked me out.

I might just add here that not long after posting, my street had a power failure. I am home alone & was just a tiny bit freaked out & wishing I hadn’t started reading the responses! It was night time here...

Did you survive op?

Downunderduchess · 12/04/2020 13:19

@cushioncovers yes, I lit some candles and shut myself in my bedroom, the power came back on four hours later. Bad timing for something like that.

@Onlyahalfbottle I remember those two! Great films if you love gore. I'm not a massive fan of clowns though! The uncle is freaky

For me, The Borderlands. The ending freaked me out for days - it was terrifying. (It plays on a common fear that a lot of people have, and which I have, so I found it incredibly unsettling).

Rafflesway · 14/04/2020 11:32

The original, 1970’s version of Suspiria!

BurgerOnTheOrientExpress · 14/04/2020 11:34

Cube

I also thought wolf creek was so scary and it didnt help that at the time when I watched it I thought it was based on a true story which I found out was a lie as it wasn't actual events.

True but not true. I’m Australian and I found it a creepy story as, while not based in one true story it IS based on a composite of several stories and the unfortunate thing is this shit really does happen. I did quite a bit of remote outback work at one point and it stays with you. It’s so vast out there and many people just disappear and there are weirdo’s and locations that will never be discovered by road or air.

HoppingPavlova · 14/04/2020 11:52

I have not watched the Human Centipede or A Serbian Film but have read synopses. Whoever wrote those needs to be sectioned. End of. Coming up with those storyline’s is not normal.

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 14/04/2020 12:02

Oh my god Cube!

So ridiculous but also so freaky!

Yesterdayforgotten · 14/04/2020 12:58

@HoppingPavlova yes I know it is based loosely on some true events but at the time me and everybody I knew thought it was based on a true story as in exact events! Some crazy shit has happened you're right but I literally thought it was that exact story Shock

Yesterdayforgotten · 14/04/2020 12:59

But oh yes it is still so awful to think anything even remotely bad happens out there. I read some news articles about missing backpackers etc and it def haunts you!

Spied · 14/04/2020 13:06

The original The Omen for me.

Blingismything · 14/04/2020 13:11

Shutter Island - have never watched an actual horror film.

Hileni · 14/04/2020 13:24

Oh god. I think I've seen a clip of the serbian film. I'm not googling to confirm if it's what I'm thinking of.

I was in a bit of a YouTube deep dive a few years ago and watched a video that was called the top 10 scariest films or freakiest films or something along those lines and that came up as number 1. They didn't go into detail but said it was majorly fucked up. I searched it on YouTube and watched a clip. A short clip and it's haunted me. If it's the film I think it is it had a newborn in it.

You know when they say to people don't go see a relative that's passed away in an open casket because once you see it, you can't unsee it. That clip and burned its way into my brain and so sometimes late at night it pops in and it is honest to god the most disturbing thing I've ever witnessed.

If I had a genie with 3 wishes, one would be that I never saw that clip.

Promote evil right now hahaha, terror always helps us to stand out, and enjoy more.

123movies

Lampan · 17/04/2020 08:11

Yes @cptartapp I agree about Open Water! Definitely the scariest film I have seen, cos it’s real and it’s easy to see how the chain of events unfolded. I listened to a podcast on the story recently too (I think it was an episode of Casefile)

Wannabegreenfingers · 17/04/2020 08:25

The Entity, scared the crap out of teenage me. I had to get my dad to pick me up from my friends house.

MehitabelWhurl · 17/04/2020 08:31

I like The Ritual on Netflix.

Watership Down. I think I was about 10 when I watched it for the first time and it gave me nightmares for weeks.

BlackSwan · 19/04/2020 10:31

Spoorloos - the Vanishishing.
Dutch film I think - about abduction and being buried alive. Chilling stuff.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 19/04/2020 10:42

The Strangers.

Horrifying and even more horrifying because it's a true story.

bumblenbean · 19/04/2020 10:56

Agree about Sinister. I’m hard to scare and that one really unsettled me.

The original French Martyrs is extremely disturbing. It’s the only film I’ve struggled to finish and at one point nearly turned off, but wanted to see how it ended. Really hard going so approach with caution!

A rather obscure Australian horror film called ‘the loved ones’ about a teenage girl and her psychopathic father who imprison a boy who rejects her. Very very dark but extremely well acted and original.
