Scariest film you’ve seen

What has been the scariest movie you’ve ever seen, one that freaks you out, even years later?

I still remember seeing the original When a Stranger Calls & Sleeping With The Enemy. Psychological thrillers scare me more than horror or gore. The building of suspense.

@Surly & @Lordfrontpaw
Rec is Spanish, in an ‘infected’ movie rather than a zombie movie, it’s an infection caused by a demonic possession.

It’s one of my all time favourite moves.

MarthasGinYard · 10/04/2020 10:34

'Oh Jesus. I just read the premise of A Serbian Film. How did that get made, let alone released?!'

I've just done the same

Wish I hadn't

Lordfrontpaw · 10/04/2020 10:35

JollyAndBright didn’t the infection turn people into zombies?

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 10/04/2020 10:37

Mine are

Event Horizon - you think it's going to be a Sci-fi... Its not a sci-fi, its horrible!

And a stupid film with Nicholas Cage called Knowing. The film is pretty rubbish for the most part, but the ending, the thing that it was all leading up to, is really horrible and it really freaked me out!

Wolfgirrl · 10/04/2020 10:38

Martyrs. Horrifying and amazing all at once. It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

The Hills Have Eyes in a plain messed-up way. Not really scary as such just grim.

Saw an amazing film called The Ritual on Netflix lately - about a group of friends that go camping in a Swedish forest. It is a bit like Blair Witch but scarier in my opinion, has that nightmare-esque quality and growing sense of dread. Good one to watch with a glass of wine in the evening.

Babadook wasnt scary but was really, really sad and made me cry!

@Ledkr yep Wolf Creek was a good one, I wouldn't say it was the scariest but it had a realistic feel to it and was full of panic!

I think the actual 'scariest' film I've seen was 28 Days Later - I know it's not that graphic or anything but the way it was shot and the premise of it is terrifying!

I watch a lot of horror films Grin

vampirethriller · 10/04/2020 10:38

I've never really been frightened by a film, horror is my comfort viewing, especially apocalyptic stuff. However, Inside Number 9 TV series, some of them have kept me awake at night and some I can't watch again.

FreakStar · 10/04/2020 10:41

Candyman

petrocellihouse · 10/04/2020 10:41

Night Of The Demon in the 60’s. Parents sent me to bed saying it was too scary, so I sneaked down and watched it from the stairs. Scared me for weeks!

JollyAndBright · 10/04/2020 10:42

@MrsCastiel

The three men and a baby ghost myth has been debunked, there are photos and clips from outtakes and ‘behind the scenes’ footage that clearly show that the ‘ghost’ is actually one of the life size cut outs of Ted Danson, dressed in a top hat and tails, that was left in front of a window, it can be seen in other parts of the film in various places around the apartment.
If you look carful at stills from the movie you can actually make out that it’s Ted Danson’s face.

The Three Men and a Baby 'ghost' freaked me out so much as a kid!

TeddyIsaHe · 10/04/2020 10:44

I love Event Horizon, the only horror I do actually like!

Eden Lake fucked me up for ages.
And It - I don’t know why, it’s not particularly scary, but I had to sleep with the lights on for ages after that. DP did the laugh when we were in bed in the dark and I very nearly killed him Blush Eurgh!!
Dark Water, the Japanese version. No thanks.
And Martyrs. Just why in the ever living fuck did I watch that. DO NOT recommend.

JollyAndBright · 10/04/2020 10:48

Yes, kind of.
In the same way that 28 days later is an infected ‘zombie’ film.

I’m a big zombie movie fan and the infected/zombies debate is a big talking point....
I think to think if it as a big zombie film umbrella with different types of zombies, the infected are just a subset of zombie movies.

Onlyahalfbottle · 10/04/2020 10:50

28 Days Later terrified me as a teenager, I tried watching it a few weeks ago and I had to turn it off as soon as that music started.
Wolf Creek was horrible I don't think I could watch that again.
I found The Borderlands on iPlayer a few years ago and the ending has stayed with me I don't think I could watch it again I was so scared!

mizu · 10/04/2020 10:51

Eden Lake.

Watched once.

Never again.

Seemed so real, perhaps it was the British accents.

What on earth is this Serbian film. I'm too scared to google Grin

Wolfgirrl · 10/04/2020 10:59

Just saw the synopsis of a Serbian film on wiki

Shock Shock Shock Shock

That is absolutely VILE, the person who wrote the plot really needs assessing IMO. I appreciate horror but it cannot be normal to think up a plot like that!!

mizu · 10/04/2020 11:03

Ok, I've just googled...........

SouthWestmom · 10/04/2020 11:30

Tell me in non graphic detail what the Serbian film is about

I can't even read about the human caterpillar

Scary - the woman in black

iklboo · 10/04/2020 11:32

Noeuf - ex porn star makes film about paedophilia and snuff movies.

SouthWestmom · 10/04/2020 11:37

ShockConfused god what a weird thing to make a film about. I do wonder about people who wrote this and other books/screen plays

shineaflight · 10/04/2020 11:38

The grudge and candyman

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 11:38

Hangman 2015, that concept was utterly terrifying

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 11:40

Also the Japanese film Audition Shock

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 11:44

Oh and the japanese The Ring; much more scary than the American remake.

Rayn · 10/04/2020 11:45

The Orphanage is incredible.

iklboo · 10/04/2020 11:55

Not especially scary but Pan's Labyrinth is quite disturbing.
