Scariest film you’ve seen

What has been the scariest movie you’ve ever seen, one that freaks you out, even years later?

I still remember seeing the original When a Stranger Calls & Sleeping With The Enemy. Psychological thrillers scare me more than horror or gore. The building of suspense.

I loved Rec. Wolf Creek was pretty good. The Strangers really got to me for some reason.

Postspecific · 10/04/2020 21:47

Also, Duel! And I always thought the beginning of Jeepers Creepers was really good. The rest of it was ridiculous.

Kiki275 · 10/04/2020 22:07

The Exorcist.
Not because of the actual film but because I'd started watching it with friends then went home and watched the rest alone. Got up to go to the loo, switched the light on and the fuse blew for the whole of upstairs.
Nearly wet myself and shot back into bed so quickly!!

I used to love horror films but since having DCs I can't watch them as much. Plus I have far too much of an overactive brain at night and it seems to play the whole film through my head when I'm trying to sleep.

Upherefordancing · 10/04/2020 22:48

Wolf Creek!!

I saw it when I was 40 and thought horror films wouldn't scare me any more, but I kept reliving the worst bits in my head for about two weeks afterwards.

I got over it by Googling the actor who played the bad guy and finding out he used to play a loveable character in Neighbours, and then watching loads of YouTube clips of him in scenes from the show!

Takeitonthechin · 10/04/2020 22:50

The descent, don't think I will ever go caving

DarkDarkNight · 10/04/2020 23:08

Wolf Creek for me too.

It could happen, people have disappeared in that way. It’s such a horrible thought, so anxiety-inducing.

Amortentia · 10/04/2020 23:53

I had a relative who put on really horrible films when I was very young, can’t watch anything remotely scary now. One that sticks in my mind was an early 80s film called (I think) Love Thy Dead, if you saw a zombie you would puke your guts up, including all the blood in your body. 🤢

Years later I was talked in to watching 28 days late, thought I was going to have a heart attack my pulse was racing. I assume that people who watch horror films don’t have vivid dreams like I do. 🤣

@Upherefordancing
@DarkDarkNight

Wolf Creek is based on real life events Confused sorry to make it worse!

DarkDarkNight · 11/04/2020 02:04

I know Wolfgirrl and it does make it worse Sad. Like some episodes of Criminal Minds based on real cases and I used to love them but can barely watch them now.

Geepipe · 11/04/2020 02:17

Texas chainsaw massacre the original. So many awful scenes.

Martyrs- the original french one about torture and the weird cult. Awful so so awful and horrifying.

Silence of the lambs still makes my skin crawl but i love it and watch it alone.

The first paranormal activity film and the 2nd. Hated the rest.

Geepipe · 11/04/2020 02:28

As above so below- the paris catacombs.

Babadook was more beautifully metaphor for the mothers grief.

Rec- very good.

The original woman in black.

Fragile- set in a closing down childrens hospital om the isle of wight its fantastic.

Geepipe · 11/04/2020 02:30

Gothika- its just brilliant and so sad, penelope cruz is fantastic in it.

Stir of echoes- have always loved that film.

insertcaffeine · 11/04/2020 02:42

Event Horizon, Eden Lake and The Road.

My2catsarefab · 11/04/2020 02:46

Salems Lot. Watched in the 80s when I was little. The scratching at the window and the rocking chair scene gave me nightmares for years.

WinstonWolf · 11/04/2020 03:03

Candyman - almost put me off mirrors for life having watched it at 13ish. Do wonder if I'll make it through the remake or not?

The Ring (original Japanese version)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare - this scared me more than the original as it's set in "real life" and the actors are playing themselves, which was just a terrifying prospect.

I have no tolerance for demon/possession/supernatural films since birthing my child, but still love zombies thanks to Romero.

Geepipe · 11/04/2020 03:12

Jacobs ladder.

Also there was horror movies called House and House 2 that scared the shit out of me when i was about 9 and ive never been able to look it up or watch it since.

hardyloveit · 11/04/2020 08:07

@DarkDarkNight you should try watching the rest of criminal minds - I agree the later series is actually pretty scary but it's the last season now and they are wrapping all the characters story lines up!

Onlyahalfbottle · 11/04/2020 08:16

House of 1000 corpses and The Devil's Rejects I will never ever watch those again!

rainbow1982 · 11/04/2020 08:35

Sinister was terrifying!! We watched it for the 2nd time the other night and half way through I asked could we turn it off and watch the rest the next morning in the sunshine when it was less scary!!

Also the visit, Jesus Christ that old lady manically scrambling under the house will haunt me forever 😫😳😱

IScreamForIceCreams · 11/04/2020 08:36

The Ring

booellesmum · 11/04/2020 08:40

Hellraiser

cptartapp · 11/04/2020 08:43

Open Water. Real life story of two divers who were abandoned in shark infested waters. Gruesome end and totally true.

goldpartyhat · 11/04/2020 11:23

I've seen clips from the Serbian Film! It's was just horrifying. I wouldn't even contemplate watching the whole thing. Really sick.

Sleeping with the Enemy, Salem's Lot, 28 days. Anything with zombies!

Snooks1971 · 11/04/2020 21:51

Thank you OP for this thread. Just nudging in to add this:
Because of this thread I watched Orphan on the iPad this morning before the kids were up - loved it - if anyone wants to watch it don’t do what I did and google the premise! It will (slightly)!ruin the twist at the end!!
Im currently a third of the way through The Purge… no idea if it’s a thriller or a horror ?? Back to it arghhhhh
