Just watching die hard (for about the millionth time)

He's carrying a gun as a passenger on the plane no bother - at what point was this outlawed? May need USA mners help with that one.

When he goes to the reception in the plaza the guy has him look holly up on the touch screen (how whizzy modern did that seem then?!) BUT he then goes on to say they're the last ones in the building and directs him - if they're the only ones in the building why didn't he say so at the beginning?

That's just to start things off I'm sure I'll think of more over the course of the thread and as I watch more films over festive period.

What are yours?

Titanic when the captain is on deck supervising the evacuation, he shouts follow me and everyone runs the opposite way. Grin

overnightangel · 23/12/2019 23:56

Shameless placemark

Graphista · 23/12/2019 23:57

Ahh yes that is a good one! The whole of titanic is pretty nonsense and bonkers but yes that's a good one.

When Indiana Jones is doing the blackboard chalk diagram of the neolithic burial monument near the start of Raiders Of The Lost Ark and he tells the students it's NEOLITHIC (double underlined) afterwards. I mean you just wouldn't, would you? You'd say, here is the type exemplar of that neolithic burial class.

It's like giving a lecture on platelets and then at the end saying OH THAT'S A FUCKING COMPONENT OF BLOOD BY THE WAY.

Graphista · 24/12/2019 00:11

@overnightangel I hope it won't disappoint

Disaster movies generally are pretty good for people doing daft shit! But I still love em.

Independence Day - the computer virus - supposedly the alien tech is FAR beyond human capability as explained by data Brent spiners character yet apparently a tv company tech can devise a virus to break through all their equivalents to firewalls - I've worked in IT most can't even get the home pages to work properly!

Gremlins - don't feed em after midnight - by what time code? What happens with daylight saving time changes?

Raiders of the lost ark - well that's the biggie isn't it. Just let the damn thing stay lost then the nazis won't get it!

@wegohigher excellent point - and as an ex nurse I love your blood analogy!

Science in movies is deeply dubious!

My physics is shite but even I'm Hmm at some of the bollocks script writers try to get away with especially in disaster and space movies

Just home from the new Star Wars film.
How do they manage to breathe in space?

Graphista · 24/12/2019 00:31

Back to the future - fair few in this franchise to be fair but the glaring one in the first movie - why don't his parents wonder why their son looks exactly like the guy that got them together?

Terminator - why did Skynet only send one terminator back?

And tech so quickly ends up dating movies - flip phones, faxes even the aforementioned touch screen - that's in most gp surgeries now! Very mundane

Graphista · 24/12/2019 00:34

@Bombaybunty spot on! I THINK we're supposed to know that while appearing humanoid luke etc were born on these planets so they're not actually human they're human looking aliens so they may breathe different substances or not breathe at all.

I absolutely adore the Star Wars franchise but it IS full of utter nonsense and massive plot holes.

Not least how are the imperial army so powerful when they repeatedly show themselves to be bloody stupid?

Don't even get me started on Independence Day.

30 seconds before the mothership detonation? I've actually timed it I was pissed and it's about eight minutes.

And how did David get the Wi-Fi code for the mothership, because I'm pretty sure that that one isn't down to a British neighbourly awkwardness of saying No.

Verily1 · 24/12/2019 00:53

Terminator- they only sent one at first because they had just developed the tech and only had space for one.

WeGoHigher · 24/12/2019 00:55

And he had to be naked.

WeGoHigher · 24/12/2019 00:55

Apart from all the metal.

WeGoHigher · 24/12/2019 00:56

And dust.

WeGoHigher · 24/12/2019 00:56

And random molecules attached to the dust.

WeGoHigher · 24/12/2019 00:57

And the gunk inbetween the toes.

Graphista · 24/12/2019 01:57

Definitely found my people Grin

Normally I get accused of being a fun sponge for this stuff but I still very much enjoy the movies despite the plot holes and illogical "science"

I'm actually worst with medical tv shows and occasionally films because whilst I'm no neurosurgeon I spot glaring medical errors like x-rays that supposedly show a broken bone that don't, or supposedly bad obs that wouldn't cause alarm in real life

A friend is an IT person and he's forever pointing out all the tech ones but again he still enjoys the movies/shows and is actually a big sci-fi fan

SPOILER

In Sphere when the being has been talking to them in code and they realise they (IIRC, a professional cryptologist) had one letter of the code wrong so read the name as being some random when it was actually one of the crew (something like 'oh, it's not Larry, it Harry') -

How come they didn't realise when it was saying 'Lello' and 'Low are you?' then?

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 02:53

In Rise Of Skywalker (no spoiler)

A character is given an object that they will not be able to complete a mission without. It is never referred to again.

Another character persistently alludes to and is questioned about some secret. It is never revealed.

It is so obvious they had no clue where they were going plot wise in the whole film.

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 03:01

Spoilers For Interstellar and The Martian

I cannot and will never accept that Matthew Mahogany would be able to time travel exactly to his daughters bookcase to be a Bookcase Ghost in the past via a wormhole lightyears away. Hmm

Matt Damon would've died leaving Mars's atmosphere or during the throw me catch me spacewalk and so would Jessica Chastain

As for fucking Ad Astra, none of it made sense but where the fuck did the monkeys in space come from?

SpaghettiSharon · 24/12/2019 03:08

The thing that always makes me laugh in Star Wars is how bad the stormtroopers are at shooting Grin. They can be feet away from the goodies but miss every shot whereas the goodies will fire over their shoulders and hit every time (through their ludicrously crap armour) Grin.

Still love the films though!

Ifeelinclined · 24/12/2019 06:12

Omg @ graphista. My husbands fave movie is die hard. And I'm in the us. I'm gonna be asking him your questions and will report back!

Verily1 · 24/12/2019 07:07

Every birth scene in every movie ever!

NannaNoodleman · 24/12/2019 07:23

Home Alone:

As they leave the house "the flight leaves in 45 minutes"... how close do they live to the airport!

The mum asks about hiring a private plane to get home from PARIS!!... what do they do for a living?

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 24/12/2019 07:29

The Matrix: the thing about using humans as batteries is such total bollocks in terms of physics or thermodynamics. That annoys me because it would be the work of a second to say they’re “using the processing capacity of the human brain” instead (maybe even quoting Penrose’s technobabble about quantum microtubules, which is still probably bollocks but much more plausible).

Generally speaking I’ll accept impossible things if the story wouldn’t work without them, so they had no choice, like the dust storm in The Martian, or faster than light travel. But when they just cock it up for the hell of it I get grumpy.
