Just watching die hard (for about the millionth time)

He's carrying a gun as a passenger on the plane no bother - at what point was this outlawed? May need USA mners help with that one.

When he goes to the reception in the plaza the guy has him look holly up on the touch screen (how whizzy modern did that seem then?!) BUT he then goes on to say they're the last ones in the building and directs him - if they're the only ones in the building why didn't he say so at the beginning?

That's just to start things off I'm sure I'll think of more over the course of the thread and as I watch more films over festive period.

What are yours?

Oh! I didn't realise that about Gravity, I thought it was legitimately based on the book. Obviously wasn't paying much attention.

He has to go to the Dursleys as he is protected by strong magic placed by dumbledore when under their roof which disappears when he comes of age at 17

Wasn't it also connected to the protection his mum gave him by dying for him only lasting as long as his home remained with her blood relatives? Vaguely recall Dumbledore doing something too but thought it all came back to his mum sacrificing herself? (I've been listening to the audio books a lot when I can't sleep!)

doadeer · 24/12/2019 19:08

Ohwhen

Ah yes that's right! His mother's love is a the basis of everything 😂😂

TheCanterburyWhales · 24/12/2019 19:09

Also Home Alone- there's something awry with the timings of the plane to Paris. Chicago- Paris is about 7 hours and then with the time difference...they'd land in Paris at night...but it's night in Chicago and broad daylight in Paris.

Kevin buys washing powder but no washing powder drops out of his shopping bag.

Frodo never bloody blinks. And Legoland never speaks to Frodo in any of the films.

The Harry Potter loopholes and unanswered questions I think are proof that JK didn't have a complete plan with a plot development well defined when she started out. There are also loads of examples of clumsy interjections used to explain wizardy stuff to us (Harry) You spend a lot of each film going "but Ron would know that having been brought up in the wizarding world"

doadeer · 24/12/2019 19:11

Also in Harry Potter...

Harry has tons of money in the bank and Hermione is obviously very comfortable and they constantly sponge off the weasleys! Why doesn't Harry give them some bloody money when they are struggling! So tight

ILoveYou3000 · 24/12/2019 19:16

I never quite understood why he kept having to go back to the Dursleys every summer instead of splitting his summertime between many interested caring adults.

He had to. It was part of the protection his mother's sacrifice gave him. As long as he considered the Dursley's as home and returned there each year the protection held until he came of age.

He's carrying a gun as a passenger on the plane no bother - at what point was this outlawed?

I believe in the US, pre-911 law enforcement were able to carry firearms on domestic flights. Now only Air Marshals are allowed to carry a gun during flights.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 24/12/2019 19:17

Kevin is able to call for pizza because it's a local number and the lines for those were alright. It was out of area that was an issue.

If the one about not breathing in space from the latest star wars is what I think it is, then it's because those ships had not left the atmosphere.

StressyMcStressFace · 24/12/2019 19:20

Another Titanic one. The ship is sinking and Billy Zane is chasing LdC with a pistol, recklessly firing shots, trying to kill him - pretty terrifying situation to be in right? Nope. The rest of the passengers are shuffling about with their heads hanging looking at their feet 👀

ohwheniknow · 24/12/2019 19:27

And Legoland never speaks to Frodo in any of the films.

Legoland?

afrikat · 24/12/2019 19:44

Love Actually drives me mad every time despite loving the film itself. None of the timelines make sense.

The start is 5 weeks to Christmas yet kids are only just getting their parts in the nativity a week or so later. Sam decides to get a part in the school performance like 2 weeks from the show. And still has to learn to play drums. Its evening on Christmas Eve when Jamie goes to his mums, dumps the presents and makes a dash for the airport. Where he manages to get on a flight to France and get to Aurelia's restaurant at a decent time. Oh and she doesn't speak French but works in a restaurant in France?
I could go on..

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 24/12/2019 19:54

The Mamma Mia film...
The daughter is about 20, yet her mother and potential fathers are all 50 to 60 which meant that Donna was 40 when she got pregnant and wrote that ghastly "teenage" diary

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 19:54

It terms of stuff that has dated

Most of the interactions in 80s teen films between the boys and girls seem dodgy as all fuck now, but were at the time so normal that the films had no problem getting made

The tech and how cringeworthily not fit for purpose of is massively dates Alien. They are like shit old BBC computers or something running a spaceship

Same for films with early mobiles

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 24/12/2019 20:14

Toy Story - Andy refers to Jessie by name throughout Toy Story III - yet when she first arrived at the end of Toy Story II, he shouted "It's Bazooka Jane!" so he was clearly not familiar with the round up gang's names. How did he come to learn Jessie's real name?*

Also, didn't Andy's mum notice the pile of new toys at the end of Toy Story II and wonder where the heck they'd come from?

*could be explained if you buy the fan theory that Andy's mum is Emily.

Graphista · 24/12/2019 20:54

Ugh yes ages of actors in films drives me nuts too!

Mothers that are 50 years older than children

Or "parents" that are less than 10 years older than the ones playing their "children"

At least make it realistic!

Even at times siblings that have massive age gaps or of course people playing teens in their 30's!

OP posts:
TheCanterburyWhales · 24/12/2019 21:15

Legoland= Legolas obviously.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 24/12/2019 21:20

I see potential for annoying my LOTR-obsessed DH by referring to Legolas as Legoland Xmas Grin.

Cismyfatarse1 · 24/12/2019 21:21

The classroom in Raiders of the Lost Ark was my form room at the time. Sadly, it was filmed over the summer holidays.

(Not relevant)

TarquinGyrfalcon · 24/12/2019 22:23

Love Actually - the school concert is on Christmas Eve - totally not going to happen ever as schools have broken up and no one thinks "let's get the children and teachers back in for Christmas Eve"

Millymollymandybestie · 24/12/2019 22:35

Just what’s Christmas with the kranks - just tell your adult daughter you have booked a cruise ???

Graphista · 24/12/2019 22:59

Yea I've thought that about the love actually Christmas Eve school concert from first watch - no way would a school schedule that!

Also back to the age thing saw on Facebook recently Keira knightley and Thomas sangster (plays Liam neesons stepson) are only 5 years apart in age! Keira is clearly (hopefully really) playing at least a few years older as she was only 18 when it was released (17 when it was filmed? I don't know)

OP posts:
Verily1 · 25/12/2019 21:28

Sean Connery was only 10 years older than Harrison Ford when he played his dad in TLC.

Most 80s film plots wouldn’t work in an age of social media- imagine the breakfast club- they’d already know each other online and they wouldn’t become friends for the day for fear of photos going round the school the next week,

Graphista · 26/12/2019 01:17

Yes I knew that about last crusade - bonkers

And yes modern tech would screw most of the great older movies plots it's why my stomach sinks when I see they're remaking so many!

OP posts:
TreeTopTim · 26/12/2019 05:43

My ds loves watching a movie and pointing out things like this.

echt · 26/12/2019 07:55

One tech-based: how come the further back in time you go the Star Wars series, the more sophisticated the robots/tech gets?

One continuity: In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's hair bunches go up and down like yo-yos, they're never the same length/curl from one scene to another. My brother pointed this out to me and it's all I can look at now.

SymphonyofShadows · 26/12/2019 08:05

The Holiday when they arrange for a big Hollywood event in honour of the older guy whose name escapes me, in three days flat. And how does Cameron Diaz know where Jude Law lives?

CrissmussMockers · 26/12/2019 08:52

Just watched the wonderful Wild Rose (Jessie Buckley is fab) but must point out that a convicted heroin smuggler is unlikely to get a visa to get to Nashville.
