Just watching die hard (for about the millionth time)

He's carrying a gun as a passenger on the plane no bother - at what point was this outlawed? May need USA mners help with that one.

When he goes to the reception in the plaza the guy has him look holly up on the touch screen (how whizzy modern did that seem then?!) BUT he then goes on to say they're the last ones in the building and directs him - if they're the only ones in the building why didn't he say so at the beginning?

That's just to start things off I'm sure I'll think of more over the course of the thread and as I watch more films over festive period.

What are yours?

Most 80s film plots wouldn’t work in an age of social media

Yes, that's very true - and mobile phones would also remove many plot points.

“One tech-based: how come the further back in time you go the Star Wars series, the more sophisticated the robots/tech gets?” That was my ex’s big objection to the new films

In the wizard of oz apparently there were also issues with Judy developing over the course of making the film I think she was bound for much of it, horrific
much of what happened on that film actually, drugging her up and down, poisoning actors with make up and I think the actors that played the munchkins were very badly treated too.

And yes legal issues don’t seem to exist in many movies - visas, passports, divorces all seem to miraculously occur with little effort

@Millymollymandybestie just watched Christmas with the Kranks today and all 5 of us were yelling this at the screen! Grin

What a ludicrous premise for a film!

WeGoHigher · 26/12/2019 23:25

Ugh yes ages of actors in films drives me nuts too!

The granddaughters in Titanic and The Philadelphia Experiment were surely far too young.

thenightsky · 27/12/2019 00:13

We've just watched Wild Rose. Lovely film. Tear-jerky and warming. But we were all shouting at the screen 'Esta no way'!

Graphista · 27/12/2019 00:20

It's really odd on the legal stuff but it's also usually really obvious to me even without knowing date film was made/released whether it was made pre or post 9/11 something that has led to interesting discussions with Dd as she's too young to remember a world pre 9/11 even though she's almost 19!

And also when it's films set in parts of the world you've lived in do you guys find yourself going "well that's not there! It's on the other side of town!" Etc ?

Titanic ages were fine- there was a 62 year age gap between old rose and Suzy Amis at the time of the film (97 -and 35). So rose had a child aged 31 and he/she had the granddaughter aged 31- not a big gap at all!

The classroom in Raiders of the Lost Ark was my form room at the time.

They shot About A Boy in my old primary school, so nerrrr.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 28/12/2019 18:29

Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Kevin Costner lands is boat on the British coast with white cliffs clearly seen behind him and states "we'll walk to Nottingham. We'll get there by dark" Nottingham is around 200 miles from the South coast so that is one hell of a walk!
Also, when they (supposedly) arrive they are actually at Hadrien's Wall.
Not really plot failures, more geographical errors but they wind me up every time.

PorpentinaScamander · 28/12/2019 18:41

Regarding Harry Potters extended family. JK Rowling said in an interview once that his Grandparents had all died before he was born.
Apparently James' parents had him 'late in life's and died of some kind of wizarding illness.

Marriedtoapenguin · 28/12/2019 19:58

The dimness of teenagers in slasher films. Oh I know, I'll go and see what's in the tool shed/dark woods/room with spikes in.

Just how well known is Mr Bond and why don't the bad guys just shoot him?

If films made sense most would be about 10 minutes long.

Graphista · 28/12/2019 20:31

If films made sense most would be about 10 minutes long.

If that Grin

Yes to walking from Dover to Nottingham would take a damn sight longer than a few hours! Nuts! Hell even if riding horses would take longer than that!

I've lived in various parts of the Uk and even in other European countries I've even spotted in some films different countries being used as parts of the same city.

There is a phenomenon in movies known as "Mrs Miniver's Fridge," a reference to the wartime classic made in Hollywood featuring a Hollywood designer's idea of a chocolate-box English rural thatched cottage, complete with giant walk-in fridge in 1940.

Unlikely Mrs M even had a fridge, probably just a cold pantry on the south side of the cottage.

Zilla1 · 10/01/2020 16:42

The Matrix (spoiler, I suppose) - basic thermodynamics/effiency of converting food/humans into energy makes the idea of using humans as batteries infeasible.

Zilla1 · 10/01/2020 16:45

Sorry, Ilssort, I've just noticed your insight higher up the thread.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/01/2020 17:02

In the Day After Tomorrow there's a huge freeze and people are dying as soon as the cold touches them. But Jake Gyllenwhatshisface gets in a TENT and somehow that's fine, the cold can't get him there.
