I'm really excited to see this. Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in the same film - what more could a girl want Grin
Anyone else going to see it?

Saw this yesterday and just love, love, loved it. I felt like applauding at the end of every number!
Downloaded on i-tunes the minute I got home.
A cheesy bit of fantasy!
So hope they make it into a stage musical- it could be very spectacular with the right production behind it.

mizu · 03/02/2018 22:11

Just got back from watching this and, despite my misgivings, I bloody loved it. Fun, colourful and easy to watch, perfect family film. My 2 DDs absolutely loved it too.

biscuitmillionaire · 03/02/2018 22:26

I was really disappointed in it. Went as DD wanted to go. I too hadn't realised there was so much 'musical' in it. PPs are right, the songs were unremarkable, the plot was obvious and banal, the characters shallow. I was disappointed it didn't show any of how they put the first show together, there was no drama, it was just, here's a another blaring song. And the absolute worst moment was after we'd heard so much about Jenny Lind being the world's best most amazing opera singer, she starts singing like something out of X-Factor. And the make-up was all just wrong wrong wrong. Moulin Rouge did the victorian setting with modern music and did it a million times better. And I loved LaLaLand - different league in terms of quality of music.

biscuitmillionaire · 03/02/2018 22:28

The woman who played the trapeze artist was good, I have to say.

Notagainmun · 09/02/2018 14:50

I loved it! All musicals are cheesy but good ones make you feel uplifted. Pure escapism. I didn't want to watch a documentary on PT Barnum, they just used his story loosely for the plot.

GottaGetThisDone · 11/02/2018 17:44

I went to see it last Tuesday.....I LOVED it, I wanted to stand and applause at the end. Went home via Tescos and bought the soundtrack. Friday I was telling my DD about it and she wanted to see it so we went, and egan it loved it and DD totally agreed it is a superb film, very feel good.
I thought the trapeze artist artist looked like a very young Catherine Zeta Jones

LoniceraJaponica · 11/02/2018 23:31

Wow. It seems like the film critics are out in force on this thread. The film isn't intended to be high culture. It is a wonderful piece of entertainment that lifts the spirits on a dreary winter's evening.

theloniousmonk · 14/02/2018 12:36

Brendasumbrella - I love that reviewGrin She is my spiritual daughter!

theloniousmonk · 14/02/2018 12:40

The film critics are out because it was a truly bizarre, grandiose film, with nothing holding it together but the costume, set and a really long, god awful song!

NoMoreMissusNiceGuy · 18/02/2018 22:51

Loved it! Been to see it twice (went myself both times) and am off to the singalong showing on Friday!

NewYearNiki · 20/02/2018 16:07

I agree with all of this.

What an absolute pile of crap.

bridgetoc · 21/02/2018 15:26

This film was the worst I have seen at the cinema in many a year.....

Toe-curlingly awful and truly horrendous! Grin

Dancergirl · 22/02/2018 15:24

newyear and bridget dh agrees with you! The dds loved it and I was indifferent.

youvegottobekidding · 23/02/2018 09:45

We saw this the other evening & thoroughly enjoyed it, initially I thought I was dragging my DH & kids to see it, but they absolutely loved it. DH, one who never fails to embarrass the kids, began to clap at the end, he was the only one clapping & 'dad' dancing in his seat!!! DD (13) was like 'can we go now, like NOW' 😂

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 23/02/2018 22:48

Not long got back from the singalong with dd. We bloody loved it. What a fun movie with great songs.

the songs were unremarkable, the plot was obvious and banal, the characters shallow.

Are you being the NY Times critic out the film? 😂😂😂

Faultymain5 · 06/03/2018 08:31

We loved it. Took my DD a couple of weeks ago. Have the soundtrack now. We both listen before work and school and it makes us happy all day. Anything that can do that is amazing.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 26/03/2018 10:24

I know o started this thread months ago but I am finally going to see it tomorrow 🤣 very excited! I am on a day off though and going alone!

Well, as this thread has been updated recently I'm going to add that I saw it today and really enjoyed it - however I can't recall a single song. I was expecting another Moulin Rouge but it didn't have any of the heart of MR. Having said that I expected nothing of La La Land and bloody loved that. So perhaps my expectations were too high.

ladymarian · 02/04/2018 16:50

Went to see this today with my DDs. Need to say first of all that musicals are not normally my bag at all however I am a massive fan of Hugh Jackman and had heard so much about it that I wanted to see it. I loved it and that song This Is Me had me in tears!

Mandalorian · 04/04/2018 15:54

3 times I've attempted to watch it (downloaded copy, slap my wrists) and today I have finally gotten through it. It annoyed the shit out of me.

For all the reasons stated above, but especially because PT Barnums portrayal was of one unrecognisable to his actual character. I just could not get past that.

Ihatebuildabear · 05/04/2018 21:09

I thought it was very disappointing. Liked the big songs but just found it dull in places, unconvincing, lacked depth. Agree with who said about Jenny Lind singing like an X factor character. Just found it meh. Do like the songs though.

Ihatebuildabear · 05/04/2018 21:10

Didn't like la la land either!!

DeepfriedPizza · 06/04/2018 08:31

I went to see it yesterday with 8 year old DD.

It's the first film i've seen in a long time that I have wanted to see again immediately after.

I've downloaded the soundtrack and pre-ordered the dvd

Loved it

Frogletmamma · 10/04/2018 17:53

I saw this today and really enjoyed it DD11 was in raptures. Six people walked out never to return though. Can't really understand it
