I'm really excited to see this. Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in the same film - what more could a girl want Grin
Anyone else going to see it?

Figgygal · 17/01/2018 14:17

Also hated La La Land couldn't watch it through to the end

PuppyMonkey · 17/01/2018 14:23

I agree the songs are absolutely amazing, I've had ear worms for about a week since I saw it and now Radio 2 keep playing them all the time. And no, don't compare it to La La Land, whoever said that earlier on the thread. It's a million times better than La La Land.

yawnyawnyawnyawn · 17/01/2018 14:26

The end is the best bit of Lala land .. very emotional !!

PuppyMonkey · 17/01/2018 14:27

The end of La La Land is depressing and disappointing.

PuppyMonkey · 17/01/2018 14:28

But you're right, the film ending and not having to watch any more of it is the very best bit of the whole experience.Grin

yawnyawnyawnyawn · 17/01/2018 14:31

Haha.. I thought it was good , sad but a happy ending was probably too predictable .
I saw it in the cinema and I think I was the only one who liked it to be fair . Moulin rouge it wasn't .

bambambini · 18/01/2018 18:52

Saw it last night. Felt a bit wrong footed ss didn’t know it was a musical. The cinematography was beautiful and the choreography and trapeze scene excellent.

I did read that the real Barnum had an autopsy done on the black ex slave lady when she died and charged the public money to see it. Umm.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 19/01/2018 20:46

Wasn't a huge fan of Lala land but really enjoyed this. Loved the songs and all looked so pretty!! Zach efron does look odd with age though...

brackenmoor · 21/01/2018 20:46

It is one of the worst films I've ever seen. And I love musicals.

Argh at last! Someone from the same planet as me!! Grin

Teacupinastorm · 21/01/2018 20:52

Hated La La Land. I wanted to love it, I expected to love it, but I thought it was awful.

The Greatest Showman is amazing. Still on a high a week later. I would’ve walked straight back into the cinema and watched it again!

brackenmoor · 21/01/2018 20:57

I Fricking loved it as did my DCs who have had the soundtrack on repeat and are now word perfect!

Cousinit · 23/01/2018 08:19

I didn't like it either Sad. I really wanted to like it and was so looking forward to seeing it. I thought it was very shallow. The characters were underdeveloped, the plot was formulaic and I found myself laughing in several places that weren't intended to be funny. Despite this, I thought Hugh and Zac gave good performances and the musical numbers were pleasant enough although the songs all sounded very similar to me. I'm obviously in the minority though. On the other hand, I loved La La Land.

beautifulpheasant · 23/01/2018 16:29

Yes Cousinit, I found it sooooo lightweight it was laughable in parts! It was like an a-z of how to make a musical and yes all the songs blended into one long bloody song!

It was achingly shallow and as the characters were so underdeveloped I couldn’t care less about what happened to them.

It did however have absolutely beautiful cinematography, costume and the staging at times was sublime.

Clawdy · 25/01/2018 13:30

Loves this, Hugh Jackman gorgeous as always, such a wonderful uplifting film for a dreary January. Was I the only one who saw Rebecca Ferguson's names in the credits, and thought "Wow, she's done well to be in this! " Wrong Rebecca, didn't realise there were two.....

NWmum1234 · 25/01/2018 15:54

I still need to see the end! got thrown out when went to see it lol Going to go cinema again soon, going to take my daughter, any
suggestions?

Valerrie · 25/01/2018 16:01

I've just finished watching it. I was extremely disappointed, especially after practically everyone I know has raved about how wonderful it was. I found it boring, shallow and I couldn't wait for it to finish. The main song sounds too much like Despacito to be enjoyable.

I absolutely loved LA LA Land.

Dolceandgabbana14 · 25/01/2018 23:52

Just got back from the cinema. Absolutely loved it. Ordered the soundtrack, can't wait to get it on in the car for a good singalong! I don't work Fridays, so it was a fab start to my weekend Grin

BackforGood · 26/01/2018 00:03

My ds (aged 21) saw it a couple of weeks ago, and insisted on taking me last week - I've not been to the pictures in years.
He was right - I really enjoyed it.
Then, I really liked Barnum when I saw it on stage about 30 years ago (with Paul Nicholas). Still rate it up there as one of my top 6 or so favourite musicals.

  • Turned La La Land off after about 25mins, thought it was really dire.
BrendasUmbrella · 28/01/2018 17:03

I highly recommend Jenny Nicholson's video review, titled I hate the Greatest Showman more with every passing moment"

I couldn't agree more...

BrendasUmbrella · 28/01/2018 17:05

The thing I most disliked was the way they ran down Jenny Lind's character to make PT Barnum - who everyone knows was a scumbag - look better. Made me feel very uneasy.

NotEntirelyWhelmed · 29/01/2018 09:06

It was pretty dire, with plot holes you could sail the Titanic through.

Fifty year old Hugh Jackman playing a young newlywed! The daughters who literally never aged as the years passed! Michelle Thingy’s hair and costumes — not remotely mid 19th century. The banality of the songs! The cleanliness of the early Victorian Streets. It was all so rubbish.

My 11 year old daughter loved it and wants to run away to the circus.

NathalieM · 29/01/2018 11:28

My family went and saw this, unfortunately I was busy, but my dad rated it highly, which says something because he is usually super critical of modern films! This is definitely on my list for my next date night, looks like it is going to be a good watch for both parties.

Cousinit · 30/01/2018 07:38

That Jenny Nicholson review is spot on! I reckon this is the worst film I've seen in years but I would still watch it again as it was so bad it was actually quite funny.

Figgygal · 30/01/2018 19:01

Funny thing is I don't disagree with some of the comments and criticism it is saccharine and over blown and not remotely close to the real story but bloody loved it anyway
