I'm really excited to see this. Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in the same film - what more could a girl want Grin
Anyone else going to see it?

Bloody loved it saw last night and been smiling ever since
Spotify has provided the soundtrack today

Zac did sing in it though

AlexanderHamilton · 05/01/2018 09:34

I didn't like LaLa Land much but loved Greatest Showman.

Zac sang, the two who didn't was the young boy & Jenny Lind they were dubbed. I loved Hugh Jackman's characterisation. He was spot on.

The opening number was fantastic. Great choreography & a real buzz, would transfet brilliantly to the stage. Some of the music was a bit generic (opening piano chords of From Now On sounded like they'd come straight from Dear Evan Hansen.

Keale Settle as the Bearded Lady is phenomenal. (She's on the original Broadway cast recording of Waitress if you want to hear more of her. ) The calibre of the supporting cast/dancers is without question. Choreography slick, well performed, really good.

My only gripe was the style of Jenny Lind's song which didn't work for me.

Figgygal · 05/01/2018 10:56

Totally agree with the Jenny comment the actress was beautiful but Hated the way she "sang" that song

KERALA1 · 05/01/2018 12:33

So glad found others who liked it. Loved it and been listening to soundtrack non stop

sakura06 · 06/01/2018 18:33

I really enjoyed it (I wasn't keen on LaLa Land though). It's such a feel-good film, and I loved the soundtrack. There are lots of catchy and memorable songs.

I agree that the style of Jenny Lind's song was a bit jarring as she was an opera singer, but it matched the style of the other songs.

Ymamiss · 06/01/2018 23:32

Have just come back from the cinema and I absolutely loved it. Hands down the best film I have seen in 5 years, including La La Land.

The songs gave me chills and I just wanted to dance along to the fast numbers 😝

I would go and see it again in a heartbeat!

PhilODox · 06/01/2018 23:45

How suitable for children is it?
Are there any rudey bits? (8yo)
Both my DC have expressed an interest in seeing it...

Petalflowers · 06/01/2018 23:49

Barnum with Michael Crawford was one of the best stage performances I have ever seen.

Does the film contain the same songs? I love Colour of my Life from the stage show.

Sparrow8 · 07/01/2018 00:04

Saw the movie today. I really loved the music and the choreography was fantastic. I thought the plot was a bit weak but the songs were so great that it didn’t matter.

My Dd didn’t think it was very good, it was just OK. She is 14 and also hated La La Land! She preferred this to La La Land though, the music was better.

AlexanderHamilton · 07/01/2018 00:19

No rude bits at all Phil

implantsandaDyson · 07/01/2018 09:11

I took my 10 year old, she loved it but she thinks Zendaya is the best thing ever anyway Grin I really enjoyed it, didn’t think I would as much but it was lovely. I find Hugh Jackman irritating sometimes, if he was chocolate he would eat himself so he was actually the weakest thing in it for me. My daughter loved the dancing, and I’m sure I heard the soundtrack from her bedroom last night!

PhilODox · 07/01/2018 10:30

Thank you, alexanderH

Bellamuerte · 07/01/2018 10:39

It was a good film but skimmed over the unsavoury aspects of Barnum's life, such as his cruelty and exploitation of animals and the disabled, his affair with Jenny Lind (the film made it look like he didn't have an affair and she was just coming on to him), and his wife's death and his obscenely hasty second marriage to a woman 40 years his junior.

Hecksonaplane · 07/01/2018 10:40

I took my dh, ds16 and Dd13 and was surprised how much they enjoyed it as I am the musicals fan in the family and dragged them along Smile.

I thought it was a fab feel good film and I hated La La Land so much I didn't watch it all!

Shoulditellher1 · 07/01/2018 11:07

his affair with Jenny Lind (the film made it look like he didn't have an affair and she was just coming on to him)

Noooooooooo!

Please do not besmirch the reputation of the Swedish nightingale! Jenny Lind never had an affair with PT Barnham Shock

She was by all accounts a gifted musician with a social conscience who donated most of her money to charitable causes, most notably setting up a school in Stockholm.

Figgygal · 07/01/2018 11:38

Someone asked me if the could take their 4 yo seriously if I'd been in a screening with a bored 4 yo chatting through it I'd have hit the roof!!

Other than the people having the same names as Barnum and those in him life I didn't think it was going to based on fact at all.

It's been 4 days and I'm still singing. My 6yo ds has been subjected to the soundtrack in the car he loves the greatest show now though keeps asking why "that woman keeps screaming" he obviously doesn't appreciate keala settle's style

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/01/2018 00:30

Jenny Lind was an opera singer but also gave concert performances, which would have been sung in a different style, to be fair. When she retired from opera she continued to do the latter. I suppose a bit of artistic licence was used as opera is a bit niche and wouldn’t have fit with the rest of the film as well.

I really enjoyed the film as a whole. Though I did find Michelle Williams a bit wet.

DownWentTheFlag · 08/01/2018 00:38

My husband and I loved it! I felt like leaping up out of my seat and doing a backflip down the cinema steps Grin

Figgygal · 08/01/2018 08:42

Yes to Michelle Williams she had this insipid girly thing going on with her face to start with and it's her song I pass on the soundtrack

MrsJayy · 10/01/2018 23:29

Just back from seeing this it was a total joy it Looked amazing the songs were uplifting hugh and all of cast were outstanding it felt like a stage show we just loved it want to see it again

clippedcasuals · 10/01/2018 23:32

I don't get the love! I can't remember a single song and had forgotten all about the film until it popped into active threads.

Royalcoronation · 10/01/2018 23:42

Absolutely loved this.

Lilliepixie · 10/01/2018 23:48

Loved it
My 10 year old son has seen it twice now.
Downloaded the album and he's singing it constantly.
Loved HJ and Zac, who is singing, that's his voice.

And to those expecting a true to life biography- I doubt that would have had quite the same impact as the spectacular telling of this script.
I like this review

Who in God’s name goes to a kaleidoscopic musical about P.T. Barnum looking for a chronicle of the complex historical figure he really was?!!!

MrsJayy · 11/01/2018 09:15

Dd was buying the cd for her car as we were walking out of the cinema last nightGrin

WeaselsRising · 11/01/2018 17:05

I didn't know it was a musical before we went Blush

My 10 yo has been in raptures over it ever since and knows all the songs after hearing them once Shock
